    ABSOLUTELY get everything in writing, a legally-binding contract. The owner will provide an estimate that is far below what he charges at the end. He will then tell you, "Well - I only gave an estimate, not actual." He doubled ours. He charges by the hour, which was not clear upfront. Then, his crews move slowly. They also charge for the crews' travel time to and from the site, which is rounded up. They also charge for lunch time. They do not adjust anything if you help, and I did because they were moving slow. In the end, the estimate to pack my mother's one-bedroom trailer to an assisted living facility 12 miles away was $1100 for moving and $600 for packing (not unpacking). It seemed reasonable. Total hours (onsite) was 8 for everything (3 for packing and 5 for moving). When finished, the crew put me on the phone with the owner; he added $1500 with no attempt to explain the difference. (I paid for the crews' lunches for two days, which was about another $100, plus the time I was later charged for them eating.) In all, the move cost about $412.00 per hour. For the record, I enjoyed the crew that moved my mom, but the business practice of the owner who misled us on the cost was incredibly unprofessional. I would have fought it on the phone with the owner, but my mom with Alzheimer's was getting upset as this was all done in front of her. I paid it, apologized to the crew that they would not get a tip because there was nothing to give, and decided to alert the public to this business practice.
