Riggs Therapy agreed to charge a $40 copay for therapy sessions starting the first week of January. After I accepted this agreement and joined their establishment with the agreed amount, they called today 2/11/2025 to inform me that I must pay double. They told me my copay is $85 and I must pay it all asap. This was not the agreed amount and I should have been informed of the proper amount before starting services. Riggs therapy never explained this amount could change. I would never agree to paying double the agreed amount. This is highly unethical and I believe it is a crime.

This patient's insurance stated that the patient's copay would be $40. Unfortunately, it looks like this was a mistake. When we received our claims back (it usually takes a couple of weeks) it showed the patient's deductible was not met and the copay was $85.

We call insurance and check benefits as a courtesy to our patients. Patients are ultimately responsible for payment of their child's services.  ************** is verified it is based on the information we have at the time when we call, including but not limited to diagnosis codes and cpt codes.

I have included paperwork that the parent signed indicating they are responsible for any payment that insurance states is their responsibility.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.

Riggs Therapy has used a coding for Behavioral Therapy. This is the exact coding used by my daughters ABA Therapy. I am not receiving behavioral services and this has impacted the billing. My daughter only receives speech services. How can you code for behavioral services when your establishment is not providing her with these services? She only receiving speech. ***** has confirmed that they could use the coding for speech but they are insisting the coding for behavioral services because it is a higher payout. This practice is unethical. They are using my daughters diagnoses of Austins to justify the bill but shes in ABA. I dont need behavioral services.

Unfortunately, the ICD-10 codes ***** (Expressive and Receptive Language Disorder) as well as F84.0 (Autism) fall under Mental, Behavioral and Neurodevelopmental disorders. This is something out of our control. There is no other code to bill.

This company is misclassifying services by billing under behavioral services. They are not offering behavioral services. They are only offer speech services. This billing is causing issues with her behavioral services. Riggs Therapy states that they must bill me this way because she is diagnosed with Autism. This is a clear case of discrimination and bias. To be clear, they are not treating her for behavioral health. I have spoken to many professionals in this field and they have all advised me that Riggs billing practice is fraudulent and unethical.
