      I had an appointment to have a few cavities filled on the morning of August 10th. When I arrived at the office, I was informed that I would owe a total of $140 for the cavities(this was to be my share after the insurance paid). I had a $63 credit from a previous appointment, and paid the remaining amount of $77 on the morning of the 10th. When I checked out from the appointment, I was not given any type of receipt showing what the insurance would be billed, what the charges were for, and what my share would be. I have never been given a receipt of any kind checking out from this office and didn’t think anything of it.

      Every appointment I have ever had with this office, I have always been over charged by at least $30. I received the statement from my insurance company this week indicting that after all adjustments and payments had been made by them that I owed the dentist a total of $85.50-not the $140 I had paid. I called this morning to request that the $54.50 I overpaid be refunded and spoke with Christine. I was told: “Well, we never submitted a claim for the anesthesia or the cleaning supplies that were used. We billed you for those and by the time we subtract for that we only owe you $2.50. We didn’t file the claim because we thought your insurance wouldn’t pay for it.”

      I was never told about these charges until I called this morning and asked for the refund. I spoke with my insurance directly afterwards who claimed that they do cover anesthesia and cleaning supplies. The dentist office also had a sign up stating they did not know what insurance policies covered and it was our responsibility to know what was covered. The dental office yet refused to bill the insurance for these two items because they “knew” they wouldn’t get paid. It is not my fault that the billing department can’t bill insurance correctly and I want the entire $54.50 payment refunded-not the $2.50.
