    I am responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of our extended family cabin in Garden City, Utah. We are in need of a rebuild of the deck. In May 2023, we searched online and found Modern Rustic Builders on Angie's list. Denzel, the owner, connected with me via text and phone. We met in person to discuss the project and and then he submitted a proposal of the Deck Build. I accepted his proposal to build our deck for $34,725.00. We then paid Denzel a $10,418.00 check, as a down payment, which he cashed. In his proposal/bid, he committed to build the deck the first week in August, 2023. August came and we did not hear from them. I texted him asking when I could expect them. He did not reply and I did not hear from him the first week in Aug. I texted him asking what was going on, several days later he texted back saying he would not be able to do it until Sept. which we agreed to but were given no other information. After texting several times through September, asking about specific dates and info, I heard nothing. Finally, on Sept. 28th he texted back saying he was short on his crew and would not be able to do it after all, he apologized and committed to refund our deposit in the next 3-5 days. The refund never arrived. I texted him on On Oct. 16th, saying we had not received it and if he needed I would come and pick it up from him. He texted back saying... "I'm really stuck right now...I was excited to do your deck and now I'm caught in a position that I can not do anything." I replied with "when you say you can't do anything are you saying you can't pay us our money back? " I have not received any communication since that text, I have a record of all of our texting communication and a paper copy of the the estimate that he sent in May. The estimate from Modern Rustic Builders was sent through an app called "Joist" and it was numbered #*** and was dated 05/22/2023

    We 'cemented' a build for a backyard deck and cement patio with Denzel with Modern Rustic Builders by making a down payment of $17,200 on 08/31/23. At that time Denzel confirmed he received the money and said we were on schedule to start the project the 2nd week of September. After the weeks passed and we had not heard from him, we texted Denzel in which he said he was on a family vacation (09/12/23) and get back to us. Another week passed without communication and we reached out again and he replied the designer was working on it. Another couple weeks later without communication we reached out again and Denzel said Blue Stakes would come (09/22/23) Blue stakes came on about a week later and marked our backyard grass. This is the last we have heard from Denzel (09/22/23). We have texted, left multiple voice messages, and emailed Denzel asking for communication and stating we are willing to work with him but all of those efforts on our part have gone unanswered to this day. We sent another text almost two weeks ago stating we want a refund and if we do not hear from him we will move forward with action. No response from him at all still. We put a certified letter in the mail that was delivered and received 'by a person' asking for the refunded amount in whole asap.

    I hired Modern Rustic Builders, LLC to rebuild my deck May 4, 2023. We were quoted $19,674.00 for the project. We paid a deposit of $7,870.00 for material costs. The rest was to be paid at the end of the project. Denzel told us the work was to be done July 6 and last approximately 6 days. The next time I heard from Denzel was a week prior to July 6 letting us know that the work was going to start on time but that he needed a check for $8800 for materials. I asked Denzel what happened to the initial deposit that we paid him and he stated that the money went to pay the concrete guys, which as way more than we were quoted for concrete. He made a bunch of excuses and tried to get more and more money from us through text. I looked up his google profile and during the month of June 2023, he had multiple reviews stating that Denzel took their money and never showed up for the work. I explained to Denzel that I wasn't comfortable paying more money and that I wanted me deposit back. He explained that it would take 3-5 business days to get my check back. It's been three weeks now and I still don't have my check and he is ignoring all of my texts and phone calls. He is a scammer.
