Today, January 24 2025, I went to Slackwater in Ogden to support a friend playing music. I went to the bar and got a drink and hung out with my friends while we waited on a table. A man named ******* came over and told me I couldn't have my drink where I was so I apologized because I didn't know I couldn't have my drink where it was and went to finish the last sip, but ******* ripped it from my hands and the straw cut my lip open. Multiple people raised concerns about my cut lip and the fact that others in the group were holding drinks as well and the way ******* treated me was way out of line. Then I was refused drinks the rest of the night even though I didn't even finish the one I ordered that was snatched from me.

    Business Response

    Hi BBB,
I would like to start off this conversation by explaining the DABS laws in Utah. We are licensed as a restaurant and the DABS states that you are not allowed to consume alcoholic drinks in the waiting area. DABS holds a very high standard for us and if we do not comply with the rules and guidelines it can result in very hefty fines and the possibility of the loss of our liquor license. We, as a business heavily rely on this license to be successful as a restaurant and continue to make our guests happy. Unfortunately, it does put us in an unfortunate position to have uncomfortable conversations with guests regarding this law.

At Slackwater we do allow people to grab drinks while waiting for a table at the bar as long as they are sitting down. The particular group that wrote this review chose to do that. (it was a group of 11) The bartenders at Slackwater have strict instructions to inform all guests that don't finish their drinks that they can not wait with them in the waiting area. That practice was performed with this guest. They told the bartender they had a table when the bartender asked. That was a lie. The bartender then noticed they clearly did not have a table so they informed management immediately.

This is where the images and video come in. My manager ******* was sent over to do the task that by law, must happen. ******* asked the host to not sit a table by the bar so he could invite them to sit there to finish their drinks. Instead, when approached this woman proceeds to break the law by chugging her drink in front of *******s face. I would like to note that it was not her last sip of her drink it was the whole thing. ******* then took the drink. In the video you can see the drink was very far out of her mouth before ******* took the drink. I thoroughly believe that ******* did the right thing to abide by the law. Alcohol can be a slippery slope with some guests so to protect our business we chose not to serve her for two reasons. 1. The rest of her group thought it was funny which gave us the impression that the group was intoxicated and 2.In the time frame that she ingested her drink DABS also states that she cannot have another until she orders food.
Thank you, I hope you understand the difficult position that this puts us in.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

Yes I understand that there are laws to follow, as me and my party stated, but no bartender said I couldn't leave the bar when I paid and walked away. Not one employee that continuously passed by us (we were literally by the busy register for quite a while) said anything about me not being able to have my drink where I was. You can also see others in party had drinks where we were and they weren't told anything. Why was I singled out? And yes ******* cut the corner of my lip with the straw. We all admired the red welt it left the whole time we were seated. If it had bleed more I bet would've gotten an apology.

    Sincerely,

    ******** *********
