We were set up with Zen Payments (Smart Merchant Services) through Authorize.net. On October 10th, we discussed our processing fees, initially set at 2.9%. Our rep, *****, assured us they could reduce them to 1% if we exclusively used their services. During a Zoom call, he promised: "Your new pricing model will be 1% + standard, non-negotiable card brand fees. After 90 days, we can further reduce costs based on your volume. Final pricing should average 2.9%, with American Express transactions around 3.4-3.5%.” However, we never accepted American Express, yet our rates skyrocketed. In September 2024, we paid 5.74%. October jumped to 7.24%. When we questioned these excessive fees, they blamed an “included” American Express charge—even though we never processed a single Amex transaction. Despite repeatedly requesting a breakdown, we got vague responses. When I pressed further, ***** admitted Amex wasn’t even enabled for US Territories on their end! Yet, we were still charged these fraudulent fees. He assured us the rates would drop, but November was 4.97%, December was 4.49%, and January spiked to 6.19%. On January 8th, we scheduled a Zoom meeting for answers. It lasted less than 20 minutes, with the same excuses and no solutions. Even Authorize.net was shocked at our rates and offered a three-way call to resolve the issue. ***** refused, saying: "We’ve exhausted all options. If you find a better solution, no hard feelings." Fed up with their blatant overcharging and refusal to explain, we closed our account. Even then, our final statement had a staggering 6.19% charge. This is highway robbery. We were misled, overcharged, and dismissed without explanation. Businesses beware—DO NOT trust Zen Payments or Smart Merchant Services. We demand answers and resolution for this fraudulent, unethical treatment.
