On March 12, 2023, I used my membership trial to attend the 9:00 a.m. workout at F4 Training - Downtown Salt Lake City. I arrived a few minutes early to the class as requested to introduce myself to the trainer and find out more about F45 as instructed via text message after I signed up for the free trial. When I showed up, I saw the trainer and a female having a conversation that looked like they didn't want to be interrupted. Then I politely approached them and told them that I was looking for the trainer. The trainer then, without a moment's hesitation even though he had never seen me before in his life other than people who look like me that he may have known, said "I'm the trainer," and extended his hand to shake mine as he said nice to meet you. I'm out of shape, and 35 years old. It's going to take a lot of work to get me back into shape at my age and condition. So I wasn't offended. I just shook it off and smiled while I shook his hand. I told him that I was on the free trial, and he went on as if he had already known who I was, telling me where to find the bathroom, towels, and the numbers of the workstations. But after the class started, things started to unravel into a very intensely homophobic/misogynistic experience. First, the trainer instructed me to "save my wrist". I was doing an exercise with the dumbbells, and it required a lot of muscle out of my hands, arms, and wrists. The trainer stopped me from doing the exercises like the model on the screen, and told me to stop halfway through, take the weight off of my wrist, and then continue the exercise. The fact that made me pissed off is that this is my body. If I want to engage my own body in the way that the model is doing the exercise, and I have the ability to choose a weight that I'm doing it with and I'm not complaining to anyone, I have the right to use my energy to move my body the way I want to.
