I am a 62-year old Best Buy customer with a knee injury that is currently resulting in very limited and painful mobility. I placed an order with Best Buy of 8 items of office equipment. All items, including a printer, computer, and monitor were delivered to the front door of my apartment, except a heavy ergonomic chair. UPS chose to leave this heavy item at the hub of the front office of my complex. To get the chair to my apartment would entail me dragging the box from the hub to my car, and struggling up the flight of stairs to my apartment, a painful process. When I was notified that the chair was left at the hub, I called UPS to ascertain why the chair was not delivered to my door like other items. They could provide no explanation. I explained my medical condition, and was rudely told that the delivery person would not bring the chair to my apartment; and basically, it was my problem.
Despite UPS having to pay $2 million in restitution to settle a 2017 nationwide ADA lawsuit for the way they treated employees with disabilities, they have not incorporated in due diligence to work with customers with disabilities. I called Best Buy to see if they could arrange for UPS concerning the chair; and they were unable to do anything either. As I seemed to have no other choice, I went to the hub and dragged the chair to my car, enduring the knee pain. Unfortunately, it is too heavy for me to get it up the stairs. So, even now it is locked up in my car. I’m hopeful that my next visitor will be able to bring it upstairs. However, that should not have to be the case when I fully explained my temporary disability and asked for them to accommodate. UPS steadfastly, and rudely said they would not.
UPS is notorious for not delivering items to the front door, and apparently ignoring a client’s special needs. I strongly suggest using the services of FedEx, if at all possible. UPS will definitely be my last resort.
