Able Appliances evaluated my 1980s ******* refrigerator/freezer. Fridge temp control was gradually needing to be dialed down to maintain temp and was icing up along the back wall. Per their request, I thawed out the fridge before their arrival. I then spent nearly $1,200 to replace an allegedly failed evaporator fan motor for the fridge compartment, fan switch, and temp control thermostat. Odd that all 3 failed - tech never explained. The same problem developed again soon after. They came back again and now said I had a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil and would need new coils, again at high cost. I contacted my brother, who is a refrigeration mechanic in another state. He said that at the initial visit, they should have done an immediate check for a refrigerant leak within the fridge compartment - they did not. He noted that a failing fan motor is usually preceded by increasing noise as the fan begins to fail (it was not), and then with complete failure I would experience a rapid rise in the fridge compartment (I did not - it was gradual). Likewise, a failed temp control thermostat would normally result in a rapid rise in temp (again, it was a gradual problem over time). In contrast, a slow leak of refrigerant from the evaporator coil would have explained the gradual icing up and gradually worsening temp control in the fridge compartment. My brother said it was unlikely that the fridge coincidentally developed this series of problems one after another in very short order, and that the repairman did not approach this problem correctly, and likely missed the fundamental problem of the slow leak in the evaporator coils. After spending nearly $1200, I am no better off than I was before, and the suggestion to spend considerably more money to replace the refrigerant coils on this very old fridge made little sense. In retrospect, I should have read the consistently bad reviews on ****: ******************************************************************
