The experience was mixed. While the deck damage repair WAS done on schedule and price, be wary of the pricing and the payment schedule. Things to consider:(1)There is no FREE ESTIMATE. You are charged at least $850.00 for him to come to your property to review the work that is needed to be performed.(2)His claims of STONEWOOD are suspect. His is extremely evasive when additional information is requested referring you to the internet. When one does a web search on STONEWOOD, it goes his web site. He REFUSES to provide any information on that product, including an MSDS. His price for STONEWOOD is at least 100% times of that of what seems to be an equivalent product from *********** Incidentally, he delivers that STONEWOOD product in an unmarked 2.5-gallon plastic container. When pressed on the STONEWOOD lifetime warranty he claims its with the manufacturer (which he refuses to provide any additional information AND one cannot find on a web search) warranty, not with him.(3)His Deep Wood Fungus Killer seems to be nothing more than a highly concentrated bleach solution.(4)He WILL NOT allow you to purchase your own supplies. He claims his 4 times retail charge is needed to allow him to pay his subcontractors.(5)The payment schedule in his contact is biased toward him. He demands cash/check payment with every milestone. He does not accept credit card.

Our Client is correct: The project was "done on schedule and price". I personally did an On Site Appraisal, took photos, and determined that the Client's deck was typical of today's defective pressure treated decks, despite being only EIGHT (8) YEARS OLD! So many of the substructure (floor joists) were decayed so badly from fungus that the deck was dangerous to walk on. My Client was rightfully very worried about safety as well as liability should someone get hurt. I explained that his deck was very typical of what is happening across the country but that we had a wonderful solution. Our answer to his problem was NOT to tear it all down and start over which is what almost every other contractor would tell him. Our solution is to replace wood that is rotten and apply Deep Wood Fungus Killer and StoneWood to the new and old wood. MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. I had already given him a FREE ESTIMATE on August 1 over the phone but had to revise the estimate a little higher now that I had seen the deck in person. There was no "charge to come to his house". I gave him a price he was happy with. I put it in writing. He signed it and we did the work shortly thereafter. For complete clarity, we do sometimes charge a Design Fee Retainer ranging from $600 if the Client does not buy when I am there... but this fee is always credited toward the contract should they sign with us at a later time. It simply pays for several hours of my time, my gas, and 40 years of expertise. This is explained ahead of time and is published on my website at https://www.vadeck.com/on-site-design. The fee schedule is published also. My claims for StoneWood are based on the manufacturer's claims 100%. I am not willing to release proprietary (translated trade secret) information regarding StoneWood because frankly, my competitors would LOVE to know what this is made of. I have a huge amount of information available at composite-decks.com/stonewood. I also have an MSDS sheet available but he never asked for one. The StoneWood is delivered in a PLAINLY LABELED 5 gallon bucket (sometimes a one gallon container). Labels are available upon request. **** ***** does not have "an equivalent product" so there can be no price comparison. BTW, I did a search yesterday and found that ****** has a crystalline equivalent that sells for $94 an ounce. I do not use a crystalline product yet and I do not charge anywhere close to this. I use a liquid form and it is EXTREMELY good at preventing fungal penetration into wood. One of the reasons that it prevents fungal penetration into wood is that this material is extremely hard and strong. .07 ounces (7/100) will support 5.5 lbs of weight. For you math freaks, that is a 1250:1 ratio. One ounce can support 1250 lbs. No wonder it works so well. See the website for some of the science behind this product. I have a warranty for those who ask. The "Deep Wood Fungus Killer" is NOT a bleach and contains no bleach. Bleach will kill surface fungus only. The sodium hypochlorite in bleach does not penetrate into the wood fiber. Deep Wood Fungus Killer does penetrate, killing fungus, bacteria and the Formosan Termite as it goes. I will indeed allow people to buy this product directly from me. The reference to 4 times is to pay the men. When the men have to stop work, go to the store, find the materials, stand in line, pay for it, and travel back to the store... this takes time out of their day and time is money. So I ask the customer to pay 4 times the cost of materials, receipts provided. One part covers the cost of the materials. One part covers labor. One part covers overhead. One part is profit. All 4 parts are given to the men. We have a payment schedule that coincides with the work. When a phase is done to the Client's satisfaction, we ask for that payment. That is fair and good business. Typically when building a deck when we have to demo an existing deck, we get one payment after demolition... one payment after framing... final payment after completion. Payments typically coincide with County Inspections also. If a client wants to pay by credit card, they can do that through ******. In his case, I was not asked.
