I purchased a Storage unit from Shields Storage in Virginia at the beginning of the year . Part of the cost for the unit included third party Insurance sold to me through Shields and added to my rent. The insurance was to cover flood or fire damage and/or burglary. Well I found in October that my unit had been burglarized and the majority of my stored belongings had been stolen. I filed a police report with the ******* County police department and filed a claim with the insurance I had been sold via Shields. I got a call a few days later from the insurance telling me my claim was denied because “it could not be proven that a crime had taken place.” Turns out the storage company didn’t have proper security camera coverage so their internal investigation couldn’t turn up any evidence. Which is where the problem lies, I was sold a product contingent on security camera footage that was never going to be available and therefore was never going to properly cover my belongings.

The investigation completed by the ******* County Police Department and the ***** ******* took many things into consideration to determine the outcome regarding the claim.Shields Self Storage has never claimed that the security cameras cover everything within the property. The ***** pamphlet has storage tips to help protect against loss.  Round disc locks are highly recommended.  The site managers are diligent about doing site checks and reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. The website for Shields has “24 Hour Security Cameras” on the home page, implying to the consumer adequate coverage to at least allow the consumer to complete and resolve an insurance claim. In no way am I blaming you for the burglary or the loss of my belongings but what I am blaming you for is using the lack of security footage to victim blame a consumer and as a determining factor in the approval/denial of an insurance claim. I do not believe that the lack of evidence due to oversight should prove/disprove a crime had taken place.I just want the insurance to pay out what was agreed upon so that I may replace some of the belongings I had lost and I don’t want to be blamed or victimized again for this oversight in Shields’s security. ******* ********
