I made an appointment for a cleaning. After doing some high tech gum assessment, the dentist came in and looked at the X-rays, at my teeth and told me I needed extensive restorative (but said was necessary, not optional). The consultation took an hour, and they never even cleaned my teeth, He then gave me a printout of $11,574 worth of work he said was necessary. (And said this did not include everything,, though it included roots canals, crown replacements, special gum treatments, etc.). He described all the horrible things that would happen if I didnt get this all done, including losing teeth, pain, etc. Obviously I was shocked, especially since I had no pain or complaints. Just concern about an area that was a little sensitive and another that seemed to have too much space between the teeth and was catching food.I asked about the cleaning. He said a separate deep cleaning was needed, followed by a consultation, and then a general cleaning. He then told me we could set up an appointment to discuss a payment and action plan, all of which he would charge for,I left feeling totally scammed, as if I had been to a car salesman. So I made an appointment with another dentist, who looked at the X-rays, at my teeth, and previous work. He found 3 small areas that he thought should be dealt with. He said I did not need crowns replaced or root canals or gum treatments, and the cost would be more the a tenth of what the other guy insisted was needed. I truly feel that the scam dentist saw that I was in my sixties, maybe even researched my income (based on a recent purchase of a home), and decided I was a perfect target. He made it all sound very urgent and dire. I presume his defense will be that he proposed restorative work, but he insisted it was absolutely necessary. I want to file this complaint so it is on the record. So that anyone else considering going to this dentist will be forewarned, and on alert to the scam.
