We went to this Grease Monkey on September 12 for an oil change, at a cost of $60. In the week after, the oil light started coming on, prompting us to check the oil and see that it was too high, by .75 to 1 quart by our estimate. On September 21, we took the car back to this Grease Monkey to ask that they drain the oil to the appropriate level and reported that the oil light was on. They acknowledged the high oil level but declined to address it. They additionally said it smelled like we had an oil leak that they denied was their fault and said we probably had a faulty sensor. In mid October we were still having issues with the oil light and took the car to a local auto shop on October 22. They confirmed we had an oil leak but did not find anything wrong with the sensor. This inspection cost $95, but we did not take further action at the time due to the high price tag on the proposed solution. On October 29, the car started smoking, and on November 4, we took the car to have the valve covers replaced at a cost of $1,148, as the mechanic noted as a potential cause of the oil leak. They acknowledged that they were not sure this was the entire problem, but it is standard practice to make repairs at the highest point of the engine first when fixing an oil leak. A week later, the car was still smoking with a bad odor, and on November 13, we took the car back to the mechanic. After the degreasing of the engine, they identified a faulty oil change as the root of the problems we had been having. Grease Monkey had put two gaskets on the oil filter, and it was hand loose, causing the extreme oil leak and smell. They changed our oil and filter for $60, and we have had no issues since. Grease Monkeys carelessness in their oil change and unwillingness to address it when requested has cost us hours of our time for repeated trips to Grease Monkey as well as a mechanic and resulted in repairs in excess of $1,300.
