I would not recommend this bank as they stole $925 from my account without explanation. Here's the backstory. So, originally, I had scheduled an external account transfer of $925 on the 1st of every month and requested it to be stopped beforehand. So, I went through the process of cancelling the external account transfer and as of February 6, 2023, Harborstone Credit Union went ahead and decided to do the external account transfer of $925 in their own, without explanation. Not providing an explanation was unacceptable and I requested to close my accounts that very same day as this made me very nervous moving forward with them. With that said, unless you want your money and account be at risk, I would advise to not conduct business with Harborstone Credit Union.

      Dear Mr. ******:
We have investigated your allegation that Harborstone Credit Union (HCU) “stole $925” from your account. Our records indicate that on January 31st you attempted to stop the recurring preauthorized transfer from your account scheduled for February 1st. To effectuate your funds transfer instruction, HCU utilizes the Automated Clearing House (ACH), using applicable ACH Rules.
Additionally, Section V.7(a) Electronic Funds Transfer of HCU’s Membership & Account Agreement discloses that a preauthorized transfer may be canceled anytime up to three business days before the scheduled date of the transfer as required by ACH Rules and §1005.10 of Regulation E.
When you called in on January 31st, provisional credit had already been transmitted through the ACH network in order to settle on the first of the month at the financial institution you designated in your authorization. Your funds were not “stolen” as you allege, but rather processed in accordance with your instructions.
Our mission and success are focused on serving our members while complying with laws, rules, and regulations. Harborstone has faithfully performed its responsibilities while remaining compliant to legal and regulatory frameworks. We thank you for your membership and appreciate the opportunity to provide this explanation.

So let me fill in the gaps where Harborstone Credit Union left out in response to their response of my original comments. First and foremost, the $925 that was deduced from my checking account on February 6th was not in accordance with my instructions. If that is what HCU is alleging, then I want to see documentation suggesting such. On January 31st, I called HCU and spoke to a representative and was given instructions on what to do to cancel the monthly external transfer that was usually done on the 1st of every month. I was emailed a form and told to print off the form, sign it, and send it to HCU by mail, which I did that day. This was partly due because I am living out of state and the email was encrypted and there was no way for me to do this electronically from my home computer.
Later that afternoon, I called back into HCU and spoke to another representative and discussed options with the gentleman over the phone. Because I was considering transferring funds from my Checking to Savings account, the representative lifted the overdraft protection from my account to eliminate funds being taken from my savings due to insufficient funds. I proceeded to transfer the funds to my Savings account and left it there until Sunday of that week (February 5th) and transferred it back to my Checking account so that I can pay some bills the following day.
The following day, February 6th, I noticed that HCU took it upon themselves to conduct the $925 external transfer which prompted me to call HCU asking for answers. This is where the frustration began. The representative had me on hold after I discussed what happened and apparently, he spoke to someone from the Support Team only to come back to me without an explanation about what happened. This was unacceptable to me. At the least, I deserved an explanation from the beginning and shouldn't have to require me to call in the next two days speaking to a supervisor and a representative just to get the answer I deserved. None of the staff took the initiative to get back with me for a follow-up. It required me to take the initiative to call in asking for answers. Now, had I received an explanation in the beginning, this would have never happened. This is not a good way to conduct business as it degrades trust among the consumers like myself. At this time, I am in the middle of consulting legal advice with an attorney and have advised family and friends back in Washington State to not conduct business with HCU, especially after I researched a number of negative reviews about this business. So apparently, it is not just me. There are far lot of others out there that have had negative experiences in the past. I really do not think it is too much to ask for a little honesty and integrity from businesses out there that want our business.
