Wolberts has been maintaining my yard quarterly for years, and I loved them. Last year in May of 24, they came out and did their quarterly fertilizing spray. They sprayed front yard, rolled up hose, moved truck 20 feet, then sprayed back yard. A couple weeks later my front yard started to die even though I was watering it 3 hours a night. A month later, totally dead. I had **** come out and look at it, he blamed it on "the other guy". I was very disappointed as I do know mistakes happen, however, there was no other guy. Then he said it must have been the sun, even though for 7 years we water 3 hours a night, and it was not yet full on summer. It was not the sun, but whatever they sprayed. He said it would come back, it has not, it is so dead, its dead, like my yard is still dead hay. I have had 3 different landscape companies come in the last week and say it was clearly over fertalized and that it has to be totally redone to include new topsoil since that too has been affected. All my bids to replace, over $12,000. ******* excuse that they didnt do it is because my backyard is not dead. However, the driver has to roll the hose up and move truck to do backyard so this could be the reason. My yard being totally dead is 100% on Wolberts. Every company also say tilling it will not do anything because it is so damaged. Attached are pictures of the "burn" marks all over my yard which were pointed out by every company who has come supporting the over fertilizing and not the sun

      Business Response

      Date: 05/05/2025

We were surprised by this complaint given the constructive tone of my November 2024 visit with Shina. Below is our response based on our records and findings.
Our records show we applied fertilizer to Shinas lawn on 5/02/24. The next communication was on 11/20/24, when Shina reported shed been away for weeks without watering, and her front lawn appeared dead. She requested an assessment. Our customer service team cannot recall further details due to the time elapsed and volume of daily interactions. This is a direct quote from our system 11/20/24 Customer said she was gone for a few weeks and didnt water. Now the front lawn looks completely dead. Would like someone to look at it and help her.
I visited on 11/21/24 and discussed potential causes with Shina, including over-fertilization, though I noted too much time had passed to do a soil sample for fertilizer testing (which were always willing to conduct). I explained our calibration process (detailed below) and that over-fertilization would likely affect the backyard too, which was treated minutes later with the same product and showed no issues. We also discussed her reliance on a neighbor for watering during her absence, the dry summer conditions, and the lack of automated irrigation. Other possibilities, like pest damage to a dry lawn, were considered. Shina acknowledged this could be a chance to install irrigation and start fresh. We agreed to skip the next two treatments, wait until spring to reassess, and noted recovery was unlikely. I never guaranteed the lawn would recover. On 4/22/25, our team called and learned the lawn was still deadthis was our last contact. Out of a good gesture we were planning on contacting her to discuss next step and to see how we could help.
Regarding over-fertilization, Shina suggested the technicians routine of rolling up the hose and moving the truck to treat the backyard might be the cause. This is standard practice and unlikely to result in over-fertilization. The backyard treated the same day minutes apart by the same technician, with the same product from the same tank and had no issues. That day, this technician completed 17 other jobs with the same product, equipment, and pace, and same hose pulling practices with no issues.
Our technicians calibrate equipment daily to prevent over-fertilization. They measure walking speed over ***** sq ft with 5-6 ft spacing, adjusting pump pressures and conducting catch tests with measuring cups to ensure proper application rates. Pump pressures are tailored to flow rate and walking speed. In Wolberts history (50+ years), we have no record of over-fertilization causing this level of damage.
We take such concerns seriously and remain committed to resolving this with Shina. Please let us know how we can assist further.

      Sincerely,

I am rejecting this response because:  no matter how you spin it, my hard still being dead today has NOTHING to do with my neighbor watering my yard at the END OF OCTOBER for one hour instead of 3.  I mean who still has to water their yard at that time?  For 8 years I have faithfully watered my yard from May-October for 3 hours a night and maintained a beautiful yard.  From May of last year, it didn't matter how long I watered it a night, it was still dying, that is why I had you come out.  Also to note, my back yard NEVER gets watered, not then, not now, we let that do what it needs to do as nobody sees it and we drive a fifth wheel over it all summer, we just spray for week control.   As the professional, I listened to what the causes may have been, and yes, we agreed to skip the next two treatments as you noted it would come back because you told me it was irrigation issues which we don't have.  Yeah, it clearly has not come back by the pictures, continued to be dead dead with no new growth during the rain, and I have now had 3 separate landscaping companies come out and all three clearly noted it is dead dead dead due to over-fertilization.  I mean there is burn marks in my hay.   The person who originally laid my grass has agreed to redo for only $5500.  I just want other homeowners to know if their beautiful yard is overfertilized by Wolberts, this is your response.  I just want it on record.

      Sincerely,
