Hired this company to file my deceased fathers final tax return. Asked for them to file an extension while I gather the necessary documents but the extension was never filed. The company has taken no responsibility and has been hard to work with to resolve the issue (have had to call an excessive amount of times) and has cost me an additional $1,000 dollars in fees for the ***. If you cant trust a tax service to file your taxes on time I believe that is an issue.

    Business Response

I am an employee of Ascent Accounting & Tax.  ************** was the owner when Ms ******** brought her deceased fathers paperwork to the firm to prepare his final tax return.  I did not prepare, receive compensation or intake the documents. I have been tasked to resolve her issue with IRS.  The balance due is due to filing a late 2023 tax return.

The timeline is as follows. The paperwork was brought to us in June, 2024, nearly two months after the deadline.  It is not our responsibility to submit an extension without communication from the client.   Any time after April 15th without an extension is considered late. We did not complete the return until October.  The ownership of the firm changed October 1st.  It needs to be noted that we have not been paid for the original return or any follow-up.  We acknowledge if we had done the return sooner, the penalty would be lower but not eliminated.

As noted, the return was late. I committed to getting the penalty removed.  I have documented time reports that prove that I communicated with both Ms ******** and IRS on multiple occasions.  Due to the death, I had to get power of attorney from the personal representative, which is an uncle.  I then communicated with IRS.  I was told a letter would be sent to Ms ******** to which I would respond.  I told her to expect the letter.  When it arrived, I wrote a letter to IRS explaining the circumstances on April 18th. I received the complaint April 21.  This all occurred prior to this complaint, so I am baffled why she would state that there was no communication or that we weren't trying.   She is frustrated I am sure, but IRS works very slowly and I do not have the power to speed them up.  We have not received any payment but have been working to get this resolved regardless.
