Mr Chimney techs came out to check why our gas fireplace wouldnt start. Upon a quick inspection they said we had a broken valve and a cracked manifold. We were told the manifold was not replaceable due to the age of our fireplace but the valve, which they said was rare and very hard to get was ordered. This visit cost us over $300. They said the part would arrive in about 5 days. After almost 2 weeks and no callback, we called them. They said they had the part and arranged to come back. They no-showed but called 20 mins after the appt time and said they couldnt make it. Another appt arranged. After arriving for that appointment it was discovered the wrong valve was ordered. During both visits it was mentioned we would probably need a new unit which would run us about $7000. He claimed the unit was old and parts were no longer available. He said he would re-order the valve and give us a call in a couple days. No call back, Again we had to call him. He said he would call us back. No call once again. We had to call him again and were told he still hadnt obtained the correct valve. At this point, we asked for a refund for the valve that we had already paid for. We had another company come out. Within about 15 minutes, he told us there appeared to be nothing wrong with our fireplace. The valve which was still in place was in perfect condition and a very solid quality valve and is the best on the market and is still available. He also said there was nothing wrong with the manifold. He worked on it for 2 hrs. He cleaned it out, adjusted the pilot light, cleaned the fan blades, tested for carbon monoxide and gas leaks etc. He tested and cleaned every single part and assured us there was absolutely nothing wrong with our fireplace. He started it right up. He said all he had to do was adjust the igniter. All for $160. I believe Mr Chimney falsified the condition of our fireplace to try and sell us a new one OR the tech was completely incompetent.
