      I contacted GI Associates before my colonoscopy to confirm and verify my insurance coverage. They assured me twice that my insurance covered the procedure 100% as it was considered a preventative medicine procedure. I asked twice because I have a high out-of-pocket deductible. After the procedure, I was billed with a procedure type that was not conditionally covered as preventative and this resulted in moving the charges to my out-of-pocket coverage. This resulted in transferring 100% of the total payment to me. My current charges are $1,585.20 with additional charges yet to come from the anesthesiologist. My complaint is one of bait and switch. When I contacted them for billing information and assurance, they were quick to tell me all was covered, without details, when I called back after the billing was placed. The billing person told me exactly why my billing not covered as the procedure type was changed from a screening, that is covered to diagnostic type that is not covered. This change was made by the doctor, and I was not advised of this change and the impact it has on billing until after the billing to my insurance was filed. I have discovered this change happens often for this procedure leaving many elderly patients with little or no means to pay for the bill. The procedure only lasted for 12 minutes, and the results were negative. There was nothing for them to diagnose. I find this change to billing unfair to patients, inappropriate and unethical.
