We bought 1/4 cow from the same lady for the past 5-7 years and had it processed at Becks. We have the round steak ground into ground round. The same day we picked up the meat we took a pack of ground round out and placed in the frig to thaw to have sandwiches later that night. When we cut into it the meat was all grey. We thought there must have been a hole in the wrapper so we threw it away and took another package out and the next morning that was grey also. I called and was told first it was the kind of cow, then there was nothing he could do. I called the lady we purchased the cow from and she called the other people who got part of the cow and they didnt have issues. I called Becks back to talk to ***** and he wasnt in and was told he will be informed that we want to talk to him. We would like him to take that ground round back and give us some "fresh" . He has not called back

Response to *********************************** complaint on 10-3-2023

The first statement I want to address is that I spoke with the customer on Monday, October 2, 2023.  Her statement that I did not call her is not correct.  When she initially called and spoke with my employee, she told him that she was going to bring the meat back and she has not.  During our conversation, she stated that her ground round (which she had 12 pounds) is nice and red when she takes it from the freezer but when thawed it looks gray.  She told me that one pound was thawed on the counter and one in the refrigerator.  However, her ground beef is fine.  I told her that oxidation often happens when the meat is thawed, and the meat is still fine. Once meat is frozen, it will no longer be bright red in color.  Secondly, she stated that she called the farmer she purchased the 1/4 of beef from and asked if the other customer she shared the meat with had any issues...there were no issues. The customer started to get angry and asked that the meat be replaced because she is now out $1000.00. I told her that I would not replace it, she has not brought it back. After all these years in business, I have been fair with my customers, but will not replace anything sight unseen. I am more than happy to work with customers, but I know that the product left our store properly handled and frozen according to the State of ********* inspection guidelines.  Temperatures are recorded and product handled in a safe and healthy manner.  Once the product leaves our store, we do not know how the customer handles the product.  There are safe handling procedures for the consumption of meat like not eating undercooked or raw meat, but cooking it to the proper temperatures.

I have processed many animals for this farmer for many years and if the farmer thought there was a problem, she would have called me right away with her concerns.  Actually, I called the farmer on Friday, October 6, 2023, after I received the complaint in the mail.  Again, the farmer stated that the customer that shared the other 1/4 of beef didn't have any issues.

    Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

[Please type your response here.] i would gladly bring the meat back but we never received  called back!!. all meat was thawed in the frig. Never had ground round thats grey. We have 10# left as we thawed 2 to make sure and threw away one and mixed 1 with hamburger  . We picked up the meat and put directly into our freezer. Becks should put the meat in their case to sell thawed with a sign "should be good" as they told us. The pics are the grey meat mixed with hamburger.  We called the following Monday as Friday and Saturday we thawed the meat and Sunday they are closed.  As far as recording ..anyone can write down anything ... The comment that it may be grey because of the kind of cow is absolutely hilarious. As we spread the word of our experience  and add that not one person didn't bust out laughing. Also with spreading the word we have a lot of people say the quality has gone down hill at Becks and go to other places to process meat.  It now doesn't pay for Becks to call back. After reading their version there is no reasoning with that kind of mentality .  We can bring back the frozen meat  but want it replaced with different ground round that is thawed and we will freeze ourselves so we can see its red.   thank you

To reiterate, I spoke with ****** on Monday, October 2, 2023.  I am confused by what she means that I did not return her phone call as I spoke with her.

Even though she did not purchase this meat from me, our job was to process the beef she bought from a local farmer.  She paid me for the processing of the animal.  The meat left my establishment wholesome in accordance with the State of *********. My employees followed the state guidelines when processing this beef.

I would like to solve this issue with the customer.  Even though she did not purchase the 12 pounds of ground round from me, I will replace 12 pounds of ground round.  Please contact me to let me know when she will be in for the fresh meat.

    Thank you,
