04/03 date negligence warranty work. 10/28/22 pd $304.39. 10/31/22 pd $107.77. I got new tires and needed alignment, Ameritech was close by. I was told needed front driver bearing before alignment. I stopped at a garage due noise in front driver wheel and was told bearing was going out. I drove 3 miles straight to Ameritech. Ameritech checked, bearing was going out. I was told to come back on 04/03 for replacement under warranty. I drove car home 2.5 miles car sat. I had the car at Ameritech at 8am on 04/03 and I stayed until approx 3:30pm. Hubcap was lost on first test drive. I told the mechanic about it. I was told after everything was put back together that spindle had hairline crack. I wasn't showed anything. I was just told to drive carefully by the mechanic who knew that I had to drive over 700 miles with my son over a 3 day period later in the week. He said that advanced auto didn't have the spindle. For me go to junkyard or order 2003 part (wrong part). I went to leave, heard noise. I left and came right back due to bad noise. Mechanic looked and said piece of plastic hitting and I needed spindle. I drove home. Next morning, I pulled car out of garage, brakes grabbed & bad noises several times and then it stopped. I drove to Ameritech and mechanic didn't even look at it. He said "making noises?" " I told you that spindle was cracked". I left, drove 3 miles to another garage. They put it on lift and said that spindle was broken and ** welded. Lucky I didn't wreck. Brakes digging into rotor was noise. Mechanic said that he'd give me a statement if needed. He saw the car 10/22, 03/31, 04/04. Spindle didn't have any cracks. I called tire dealer, they didn't see any cracks. Ameritech did replace spindle on 04/05. Brakes now make noises, front end out of alignment. I'm afraid to let Ameritech do any more work on my vehicle. Dangerous situation. I could have wrecked and hurt my kid. Hubcap lost. Missed job interview. I had to get the spindle. Unavoidable issues

      Business Response

      Date: 06/13/2023

I am writing in regards to complaint # ********, filed against Ameritech Tire & Auto by ****** *****.  The customer came in October 28th 2022, and we replaced the Passenger Side wheel bearing .  A Few months   later, the customer came back with the same issue. We told her if it was the wheel bearing we replaced it would be replaced under warranty for free.  She said it was the same side we already replaced (Driver Side ) and we took her word for it because we did not specify on the receipt which side we had replaced and the mechanic who did the original work was out sick and we couldn’t verify for sure unless we took everything apart . She came back April 3rd to have the wheel bearing replaced under warranty, once the mechanic (who did not do the original work) got the wheel pulled off and everything apart he realized this was not the side we had replaced.  We had originally replaced the Passenger Side and now the sound was coming from the Driver Side and that bearing had gone bad as well. Since we didn’t specify on the receipt and we took her word for it that is was the bearing we had already replaced we still decided to replace the wheel bearing under warranty for free for her even though it wasn’t the same side we originally did, and told the customer that.   While the mechanic was doing the work he noticed she had a hair line crack in her Spindle (steering knuckle),  and told her it would need to be replaced as soon as possible before it broke, we also noted this on her receipt   . We tried to find one for her that day but the part wasn’t available through the local part stores so it would need to be purchased from the dealer or a junk yard.  The following day the customer argued that we broke the spindle, so she found one at a junk yard and we reimbursed her fully for the spindle and replaced it for her free of charge and had to replace the wheel bearing again as well because the spindle had broke and damaged it .  So the outcome was the customer got the Driver Side wheel bearing replaced for free (twice) even though it was not the original side that we replaced (Passenger Side).  We also reimbursed her fully for the spindle and replaced that for free just to keep the customer satisfied. The customer received over Eight Hundred dollars in work that she did not have to pay for. Ameritech Tire & Auto felt this was more than enough to keep the customer happy and would like this issue to be resolved .

       Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because: I still think that that Ameritech was negligent when repairing my vehicle. I brought my car into Ameritech on a Friday to check the bearing and see if it was still under warranty, if I was not the bearing that they replaced before then why didn't the mechanic show me since he said that he took the passenger side wheel off and saw new parts? Why didn't the mechanic show me  the crack in the spindle which he said that he saw but didn't tell me about until he put the vehicle back together and gave me the keys? Isn't it common sense for a mechanic to show you when something is broken  your vehicle even if it's in for another repair? I went straight from Ameritech the next day to another garage 3 miles away and the mechanic told me there to take the vehicle off the road immediately. The mechanic said that he would give me a written statement if needed. That mechanic also showed me where the spindle was broken thru not cracked and where it looked like **Weld was used to try to fix it. I believe that Ameritech didn't realign my front end after they replaced the bearing in April. I pay them for a front end alignment after they replaced the bearing in October and it wasn't my fault that they had to replace the bearing in April it was under warranty so it should have covered the front end alignment again. Yes they did reimburse me for the spindle after I took my time and gas to go get it which they could have did when they broke it originally a couple days before and this could have all been avoided. I would like reimbursed for my original bearing cost in October and for my front end alignment. The work that they performed in April was negligent and downright dangerous. I could have had my kid in the car with me we could have wrecked according to the other mechanic and according to several other garages and mechanics that I showed the picture to of the spindle. They recommended that I pursue legal action. Mostly I hope that this dangerous negligent work never happens to anybody else because the next person might not be as lucky and somebody might get seriously hurt or killed.
