Shapes fitness is terrible. I subscribed to membership after few days before the 7days cancellation policy, I called them I wanted to terminate the agreement, they told me I would have to come before 6pm but I couldn’t I was at work. I went there the following day they said the manger wasn’t around and I needed to cancel the membership before the following week. I went back the following week . I was told I couldn’t cancel it because it passed 7 days. I literally went there before the 7days grace. Now I have a family emergency they said I would still have to keep paying for sessions I wouldn’t be attending. Like who does that? why do I have to pay for a session I wouldn’t be attending?. Pls the head office should better do something. Because I can’t pay for session I wouldn’t be attending. ** ** ** ****** *** ***** ******Shapes Fitness Centres

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience — we understand how frustrating these situations can feel, and we want to provide some clarity on what occurred.
You initially visited us on the 6th day of your membership and were advised to return on the 7th day (Monday) to speak with management and proceed with cancellation if needed. Unfortunately, you did not return on that day, and your next visit was outside of the 7-day cancellation window outlined in the agreement.
While you mentioned needing to return home for a family emergency, in later conversations with both you and your father, it was clarified that the actual concern was financial, due to being a student. Regardless, we offered a complimentary freeze on your membership as a courtesy to help during this time.
We also explained that your key fob and personal training payments would continue as outlined in the agreement, and when your key fob payment bounced due to a closed account, we reached out by email to help avoid interruptions or escalations. You then returned shortly after and resolved that payment.
We’re always open to discussing your situation further and assisting however we can within the terms of your agreement.Review fromB. H.

I have some questions that the local club was not able to answer. (Mcphillips location) They directed me to their head office. They would only provide me an email as the head office does not have a telephone number. I have emailed multiple times and have had zero response. I have gone back to the club and they have been absolutely no help. They keep directing me to “head office”. How does a head office not have a phone number? Or even a physical address? It’s a P.O. box. Horrible experience. ***** *** ********* ****** *******. To this day….months later I am still waiting for a response from so called “head office”!Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Beverly,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I'm truly sorry to hear about the frustration and lack of support you've encountered — this is certainly not the experience we want anyone to have.
I just left you a voicemail as I’d really like the opportunity to speak with you directly and help resolve this. After reviewing our main company email and checking the notes in our system, it appears we haven’t received any messages from you. I completely understand how upsetting this must be after making multiple attempts to get in touch.
Please feel free to call me at the number I provided in the voicemail — I’d be more than happy to answer your questions and address any concerns you have. Again, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced, and I hope we can make things right moving forward.B. H.

The general manager of shapes did contact me after seeing my BBB review. She was very kind and empathetic to my circumstances. She did also offer me an apology for the experience I had. I do feel she was able to right the wrong. Although, my experience was poor, she did make me feel valued in the end.Review fromDhruvi P

I had a terrible experience with Shapes Fitness. They charged me an $***** for services I never used (had membership), including personal training sessions. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue and cancel my membership, no one was willing to help. It’s shocking that they don’t have a proper customer cancellation policy in place. I feel mentally disturbed and frustrated.

I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience, and I completely understand your frustration. It's important to address both the charges and the service you feel you've received. However, based on our records, the $***** charge is reflective of the services you did use, which includes access to the club for 129 visits, as well as personal training sessions that were booked. We understand that misunderstandings can happen, and we're here to help clarify any confusion.
Our goal is always to provide transparent communication and fair billing, so if there was any miscommunication around the cancellation process, we sincerely apologize. Please reach out directly to our customer support team, and we'd be happy to assist in reviewing your account in detail and explore what steps can be taken to address your concerns.
Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we truly hope to resolve this matter in a way that’s satisfactory for you.Review fromAlex J

1 starThe rep signing us up completely **** about the child care times and services and what is included with the membership. Multiple reps afterwards have also **** about their child care services, countering each other’s statements.
They offer no help or support at all towards memberships and they’re rude and blunt when requesting to speak with a manager. Just straight up told no.
They of course charged us for child care during the holidays meanwhile they were closed pretty much every day for that service.
The facilities are not the cleanest either. ***** *** **** ******* ****** ** *** ***** ***** *** ** ***** * ****** **** ****** **** **** ******* ** ***** *********.

** *** **** **** ********* *** **** **** *** **** *** **** **** ****** ******* ******** **** *** * ******* ********** ** *** ****** The Shapes rep signed me up and tried to up-sell me to a year. I said I only needed 3 months and was happy to pay a little bit more to not be locked into an annual contract. Rep told me I would need to contact them if I wanted to extend my membership. The 3 months end and I figure there is nothing more I need to do and then see a debit on my account from them. I contact them to enquire and am told that the contract says you need to give 30 days notice or provide cancellation in writing. That's not what the rep said and as I had a representative of the company explaining everything to me in person when I signed up I did not feel the need to go through the contract line by line, and that is what they are counting on. I've been hung up on by their staff and treated very rudely as I try to navigate this situation. I am not in Winnipeg, so can't cancel in person and there is a postal strike so the letter is going to be delayed or likely lost in the mail and they say they will continue to deduct from my account until they get the letter and will backdate to the postal date. What an awful policy and company. ** *** ***** ****** **** ******** ** ****** **** ****** ****** ****** ********Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Diane,
I’m sorry to hear that your experience with Shapes has not been satisfactory.
After reviewing your account, it appears that you signed up for a month-to-month membership, which requires a 30-day notice for cancellation. Our membership agreements don’t have fixed terms, so cancellation is your responsibility when you decide to end the agreement.
As we discussed with you and our management team, there are several ways to cancel your membership. However, we noticed that you've already stopped payment on the agreement. Given the postal strike, we’ve introduced alternative methods for submitting cancellations, but it seems you haven’t yet made use of these options.
If you’re open to working with us on finding a reasonable solution to cancel your membership, we would be happy to accommodate you.Review fromRajveer K

I initially joined Shapes Gym with a one-year contract, but due to time constraints, I haven’t been able to utilize my membership. Despite my attempts to cancel, I’ve faced challenges in getting a response from the management.
While the facilities seemed good, the lack of communication and support regarding membership cancellation has been disappointing. I hope they can improve their customer service for better member experiences in the future.Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Rajveer,
According to our notes, it looks as though we spoke to you on October 21st at 12:49pm as you requested a hold on your account as you were leaving the country for some time and the representative that you were dealing with, put the hold on your account and sent you a confirmation of the details.
Other than that conversation this week, there is nothing else supporting that you have made several attempts to cancel, and looks as though you were using the club quite regularly.
If you can reach out to ***************** with your attempts that you made that were unanswered, we would be happy to review for you, however it looks as though we addressed your account hold on October 21st 2024.

I joined Shapes in October, very excited to start my fitness journey with them through the student membership. I found out that since I had **** ***** insurance I could actually pay less if I applied to switch my membership to a corporate one. I called Shapes on McPhillips (my usual location) and asked them a series of questions in regards to this switch (will this change my current contract, will I be charged any new contract fees, and asked for an overall explanation). The lady on the phone was helpful (or so I thought) and said its simply a fee reduction nothing else will happen. I checked my bank account and saw my membership fee was taken out both from the student membership and from this new corporate membership. I then saw I was charged again for a key fob, and when I went in to workout I was given a new membership card that had a new contract date on it. I asked to speak with a manager about this but the lady at the front declined. I then called the facility a total of 5 times within the week to speak to someone about this, no one got back to me. When I was speaking with an associate in person at the gym she had said *this is how contracts work **** ******* * **** ** ******** ***. That is NOT how contracts work, you CANNOT have a valid contract if the offeree doesn't even KNOW that there is a new contract in place. * **** ** ****** ****** **** ** ***** ****** ****** **** ** ********** ********** *** I just want out of my membership at this point. Again I have called and left my name and phone number for Shapes on McPhillips and I have received no reply. **** ** ******** **** ******* ** *** ***** * *********** *** **** *** ******* ********Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Priya,
We received your email today and are currently in the process of responding. It looks as though you signed up on 2 separate occasions in order to receive a lesser membership and were told that we were unable to downgrade your agreement.
Management has reviewed your account and the agreements will be merged today and a credit is being applied to your account.
Hope this clears up the confusion.Review fromJanie D

I had cancelled my membership in the beginning of November, 2023, and they charged me for the membership after my cancellation in November and December 2023. I am in the process of getting the charges reversed with my bank. ***** ******Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Janie,
Sorry to hear that your experience with Shapes has been less that positive.
When looking at your cancellation form, it looks like you signed your 30 days notice to terminate at our Fermor location on November 8th 2023 at 9:13 am - on that form it indicated that your last membership date was December 8th with 2 payments remaining as you are on the pay as you go portion of your membership! If you would like a copy of the form that you signed for the cancellation of your membership, please let us know and we can send to you!
Thank you for understanding.Review fromMila M

I have joined Shapes in 2007 and have been a member since. Now I need to cancel my membership and cannot get though to any phone number - Head Office or Shapes on Pembina. It seems the only way to close my membership account is to close my banking account, so Shapes cannot debit. Very sad that after so many years I must resort to extreme measure.Shapes Fitness Centres

Hi Mila,
We had our phones changed at the Pembina location today between 9am - 2pm, therefore our lines were temporarily disconnected.
In 2020 we made the decision to close our customer service line and to deal with everything at the club to provide our members with a face to face interaction.
Sorry to hear that you are leaving us. A cancellation can be given at any Shapes location. Since you are on the pay as you go portion of your membership, you would just be subject to a 30 days notice to terminate.
Someone from our management team will reach out to you shortly to assist you with this.

I joined the gym and they told me that I had 7 days to cancel if I change my mind. I used the gym 2 times within those 7 days. On the 6th day I went and spoke to a manager at the McPhilips location and requested to cancel my membership. She refused to cancel it because I went to the gym 2 times. Nowhere in my contract does it state that if I go to the gym my cancelation will the voided. This also makes zero sense, because how will I know if I like the gym. I explained to the manager that nobody told me that I was not allowed to come to the gym, and that does not make sense to me. I also explained to her that it is not on the contract and that rules cant just be made up. The manager did not see a problem with changing the rules of a CONTRACT last minute. * ** *** **** ** *** ** ***** ** *** ********* ******** **** *** ***** ******* As that was a lie, that wasnt written anywhere on paper, or website, or in the gym. She couldnt show me that it was written anywhere, she just said its a gym rule. I asked her if there is anything else she can do for me, any other plans. She said no.
I afterwards called other gyms to see if this is a real rule. A different manager told me, that there is a option of me downgrading my plan to 3 months instead of 12. That manager called the McPhilips manager and asked her to downgrade me, since she didnt want to do it for me. Hi Maria,
Sorry to hear that your experience with Shapes has been less than positive. Our mission, values and beliefs is to sustain a positive environment where our members are happy and feel consistently motivated. It sounds as though we let you down in this department, which is not our intentions at all.
All of our membership agreements do have a 7 day period where members have the option to upgrade, downgrade or cancel their membership completely. For those that are unsure, we also have a trial agreement to try out the club without fully committing yet. Our sincere apologies that information was not conveyed.
By giving our members a full tour of the facility and by asking a series of open ended questions, that assists us in providing you with recommendations on the memberships that would best suit your needs. A membership agreement does require your signed consent to proceed, as does the cancellation. Each of our staff are trained the same way in terms of providing all options to all members. Incorporating health and fitness into your lifestyle is our #1 goal - although there may be team incentives, anyone that has worked for Shapes understands that our main goal is to help our members get set up on a healthier journey in life that is long term. Our customers are the driving force of our business, without them, there is no business to run. We would hope that retaining clients and converting them into long term regular exercisers would be considered is a positive.
Thank you for brining this to our attention and we look forward to better serving you based on this feedback in the future.
