In February I began the process of purchasing a building kit from Toro Steel. On 2/19, I was contacted by a salesman (SM) via text, asking if I was "still looking to build". He claimed to have kits being “clearanced” due to a Canadian customer backing out over tariff concerns—supposedly already 70% through production. Pressured by the urgency, I made an offer the next day: $37,000 on a building "originally $86K" and discounted to $45K plus tax.

THis general manager called to confirm the offer and quickly accepted it, even added free shipping. I wired the 25% down payment ($9,250), not noticing until later some oddities in the contract.

On March 7 I had a design meeting with the SM and a design staff. Near the end, I was told the walls couldn't support anything heavier than conduit—critical information withheld earlier. I also learned that doors weren't included, adding another $12K to the cost. My chosen options brought the new total to $49,014. I signed an updated order and paid the difference up, $12,253.72.

Contractor quotes for erecting the building were 58% higher than expected—$95K instead of the quoted $60K—making the project financially impossible. Further research revealed similar complaints from other customers about Toro’s “tariff clearance” tactic.

I asked the SM for a refund on March 24, and followed up several times. They initially claimed the building had entered production and couldn't be refunded, despite previous claims it was already 70% complete. On April 15, they offered 50% back + a garden shed for the remainder. I declined and submitted a formal request, stating I was willing to forfeit up to 12% to cover admin costs.

A May 5 call with GM was missed with no explanation. On May 8 he called unannounced and offered $7,500 (61%) + store credit for the rest. He claimed the rest had been “spent” and warned me not to involve a lawyer as it would “cost more than $12K.” I asked for the release but have not signed it. * **** * ** ***** ********

We have reviewed this matter and wish to clarify the following. The reason cited for cancellation—higher-than-expected contractor quotes—has no connection to the original or revised purchase agreements, both of which the customer signed voluntarily. As a manufacturer, Toro Steel supplies prefabricated building kits only and is not involved in local construction or related costs.
During a follow-up design meeting, the customer requested optional upgrades, which were incorporated into the existing production of the building in question. These changes resulted in an updated agreement and further payment, which was submitted without dispute at the time.
Despite this, we offered a $7,500 refund along with store credit for the remaining amount as a goodwill gesture. This offer remains available should the customer wish to proceed.

We were attempting to buy a clearance building that another customer was unable to purchase due to lack of funds. Our experience with this purchase came with many ********** permit facts and costs, including the actual cost of the building continued to go up in price with every conversation. Toro sent us a universal engineering design that is not specific to our area where the building was to be erected. Toro quoted a so called "4' floating slab foundation" at a cost of $8,000-$9,000 to be a sufficient foundation for the building. The actual proper required foundation for our area involves a foundation with footers that exceeds a cost of $17,000- $18,000. Another false claim made to us was they would find contractors in our area to build the structure. We continually called to get the list of contractors to no avail. Finally we were told they would send (1) one man flying in from Idaho for one day to erect the building. Ridiculous! Once we were continually ******** *** unable to move forward due to inconsistent and wrong permit information we attempted to get our $3815.75 down payment back, minus the $500.00 for the engineering designs. Toro was unwilling to agree to a refund. **** **** ********* ** ******* *** ** *** ********* **** *** **** ******** **** **** ***** *** ***** ****** ***** *** ********** *********** **** ** *** * **** ** ****** *** their unwillingness to return a portion or all of our down payment is unjust. For these reasons we are reaching out to you for help in resolving and possibly getting back our refund minus the $500.00 for their designs they provided.

We ordered a building in July after being pushed heavily by a salesman *** *********** **** to make the sale. He said we would get a 60k building for 20k because it was returned and it was ready to be shipped. I made several compromises on the size and color to get this building.
Three months later we finally have the building delivered. I had a custom slab poured and bought several pieces of heavy equipment in anticipation of assembling the building.
The assembly instructions that were included were very critical and difficult to understand. I started building as the instructions seemed to indicate and as soon as I released my bracing for the first rafter the building collapsed and nearly landed on me and my wife.
I have sending communications to Toro and have been ghosted. 0 support.
We have pre and post photographic evidence.

Toro Steel buildings has delivered over 1000 buildings
this past year which were all successfully installed without any incidents by
satisfied customers. We proactively reached out to the customer to replace any
components that required replacing with no response. This was after an
engineering inquiry proved that the challenges experienced during the assembly
process was due to improper installation. If the instructions
provided are not followed -as occurred in this case- then issues such as this may be experienced during the
      installation process.

May 10th I received a text to buy a 30’x38’ shop for 24,000.00. I was not comfortable giving money for a down on the building. I was told that 6000.00 was a deposit and I e we old have to give 6000.00 more upon delivery and the balance 30 days. I was also told I’d probably get my building early June. Then I was told I’d have to talk to the engineer and that appointment was set for mid June. Then I received email and text saying I had to pay another 6000.00 before the meeting. I told them no that was not the agreement. So I was sent another document to sign and it read payments to be completely paid before delivery . I just asked for my money back and was told that it would be forfiet

      Please be
advised that in response to this BBB submission, we have reviewed the available
information. The contract the customer signed clearly states the agreed payment
schedule, which matches our recorded verbal agreement. The contract also
      specifies that deposits are non-refundable.

The customer also agreed to several optional changes during the design consultation
process. The customer selected optional changes that did incrementally add to
the overall price of the building. These included adding a lean-to that
increased the square footage by 33%, upgrading wall colours and adding wall
lights. The customers’ decision to cancel the project after this design
consultation, upon realizing that the additional fees for completely optional
choices had mounted, does not void the terms of the underlying contract that
was signed for the base building.

      We remain
available to work with the customer to either ship the building that he
purchased without any additional options or to put the deposit towards the
      purchase of a new building.

I purchased a building from them on November 11, 2022. They demanded %50 down or no deal on my offer on what I was told as an already built building. Then was told it would take 3 weeks to get the drawings and 4 months to deliver the building, which tells me they where lying that the building was built already. They checked with their engineers and said the building meet code from my area. The next week they called back and demanded another $9800 for the building to meet seismic code for my area or they said they would give my deposit back if I wanted. I said I would like my deposit back but they would not return it, instead they said they would cover the cost. They gave me the option then denied my choice. 4 weeks go by, no drawings yet, contact them and was told that it would be 5 weeks for the drawings and I would get them by the end of December, 7 weeks!!!. This company should not be allowed to get away with these ***** business tactics, especially with your BBB endorsement.
