I took one course at University of Phoenix in 2019 which I did not complete. Fast forward to 2023 and I see a collection on my credit report for ***** from a debt collector for University of Phoenix. I did not receive any email from the university or letter in the mail prior to this stating I needed to make a payment, I searched all of my emails. I did not receive any email or notification from the debt collector being used prior to this hitting my credit score. I searched how much the course cost and it was approximately *****. The creditor wants to settle at *****. I will never recommend this school to anyone, as I believe they are shady and intentionally do not communicate with you to hit you with an astronomical bill years later. In order to make a payment you have to have an account number, one I never received. Mind blowing and I feel devastated.Business Response

I filed a formal complaint against an instructor. The University of Phoenix should be responsible for their instructors. However, their motto is the instructors can do what they want. I am a Deans list student and then your four. I filed a complaint against an instructor and now Im being retaliated against and giving a failing grade. I feel I am being discriminated against and it is against the law. I shouldnt have to continuously email student services to help with their instructors that they hire for their school. The instructor should be doing her job and instructing and reaching out to students. Even though we are adult students, we pay good money to go to the school. It shouldnt always be up to the student, if an instructor sees theres an issue they should try reaching out.Business Response

I have been a student at the University of Phoenix since 2010 and I've never felt so discouraged and taken advantage of as I do now. I am 9 credits away from my bachelor's in IT, I was told multiple times by academic and financial advisors that it would be in my best interest to complete two classes on study.com which the University of Phoenix is partnered to speed up my degree up a bit as well as ensure that I don't go to another finical aid year for a few classes. When I spoke with the academic advisors (3) each of them helped me select the specific classes that I would need to take on study. com to replace two of the classes that I have left. I've called I believe 3 times to confirm and each time the academic advisor selected the same two classes on study.com to replace the classes I needed I took the advice of my advisors and completed the classes on study.com. After completing the classes as advised my credits were denied. I was then told by my advisors who were just as shocked and confused as me to appeal and that they would also appeal the issue as well because it wasn't fair. My appeal was denied as well. Please look into this issue. I need help because this degree is so important to me and now I feel bamboozled and discouraged. Lastly, I would like to note that not only does this affect me academically this hinders my career as well, because I am starting a new job, and the delay in my degree that Ive told my employers that I was obtaining I will not possess. All I want is the credits that I was promised.Business Response

The University of Phoenix provided notification to an agency that a balance previously indicated as owed would be canceled. Payments collected prior to the cancellation have not been refunded. A request was made to the university to provide a letter confirming the cancellation, that has not been provided. Following the cancellation were additional payments that the university was instructed to refund. I was instructed to call a number to request the cancellation letter, I spoke with a representative who instructed me to contact the universitys resolution department. The letter still hasn't been provided. The payments have not been refunded and I continue to receive advertisement from the university regarding continuing my education. Today I was told to select the unsubscribe link, the link was selected and letters have been sent requesting the removal. More than once the university was asked to to refund the payments, especially since the university engaged in aggressive actions to collect the finances while I was grieving the passing of my mother and preparing her services. The requests have been ignored more than once. My desired resolution is a full refund and for the advertisements from the university to cease.Business Response

I wanted it to be noted that Ive relayed to the University of Phoenix that I will contact the ********** of ******* and ****** of ******** Protection regarding the continued denial of refund finances collected that were collected under deceptive methods. It required intervention to have representatives of the university remove the balance. It was during that time a representative from the university indicated the reversal of the balance. It required intervention to get the truth when representatives from the university continued to make false statements to pressure me to make payments. It's unfortunate that it will require more intervention to get the university to pay what is owed, but dealing with an institution like the University of Phoenix, that hired third-party businesses to harass someone dealing with grief I'll let the DOJ, Secretary of Education, and the ************************** resolve this like. I am writing to obtain help with my issue regarding University of Phoenix. I believe this school is actively trying to steal funds from people who have unenrolled in the college previously by continuing to have them "enrolled" in classes and sending bills after the fact, even when you never took the class. I received a bill from a debt collector saying that I owe UoP $716.40 for a class that I took at the end of 2022. The problem being is that I unenrolled from UoP over a year and a half ago and have not taken any classes since. UoP has verified this when I went to dispute the debt with them, and said that my last date of attendance was ***** 2022.Also, my job paid for my schooling while I was enrolled and I never paid UoP directly. I have formally disputed this debt both through the debt collector and through UoP and they are both of no help in getting this resolved. This has yet to affect my credit rating but I am writing this to hopefully get it resolved before it does. This is unethical practice and this school has a reputation for scamming and defrauding people out of their hard earned money. The debt collection agency sent me this letter with the reference number #**********.Thank you for your time and helpBusiness Response

I started with the University of Phoenix at the end of 2022. I received tuition reimbursement from my employees through a program in partnership with University of ***. No one advised me that any amount I paid in 2023 for a 2022 class would not count in the universitys eyes as having met their obligation before free classes would kick in. My employer views payments in 2023 as money paid toward 2023. I paid $1194 out of my pocket on 7/21. I only received $474 refund from my employer as they only pay $5250 a year and I had reached that limit. I contacted the university and was told that they still needed money from me. After speaking to quite a few people in finance they agreed to backdate the amount owed and show that I had met my total for the year, and refund me the $720. I called back a few weeks later as I still had not received it, and was told that they simply needed to know if I wanted it in check form or back on my card. I said check as my card I used before had to have the number changed. Then this morning I received an email that they were incorrect and no refund was due. No one at this school knows anything about anything. I have received so many different answers from different people and know one seems to care that they provided incorrect information and have lied to me multiple times. This is clear bait and switch to get more money from people trying to better their lives.Business Response

I began school at the university of phoenix on 8/8. The university staff placed me in the incorrect class. the class I was placed in did not apply to my program at all.I was unaware of this information and spent 2 weeks in this class before an academic counselor notified me that I should drop the course.I dropped the course then the school invoiced me for the time I spent in the class (the wrong class).also because of this issue, I now have been forced to begin my classes September 12 2023 which is more than a month after my initial start date. I have been hung up on, I have been avoided, I have been ignored and belittled from staff in my efforts to get not only the invoiced charges reversed but also some sort of compensation for the time I spent in my class. The staff has currently only addressed the issue of me being charged for a class that I shouldn't have been in.At this time they are deliberately ignoring my request of me being compensated for the mix up.I feel it justified that they reduce the cost to 0 for 2 weeks of my upcoming course .this is because when I dropped the class that the school wrongly placed me ini had a 100%. I was doing my work and took my work seriously. There is no way to apply my course work to my accurate degree program due to it not being a course for my program, so the fair thing to do to respect my time, energy and effort is to acknowledge their wrong and not punish me for doing the right thing. my time is very valuable.I spoke with management today and they stated that they will not be discounting the future class ... so 6 weeks of my life has been thrown off and they feel it only justified that they remove charges that should have never been on the account in the first place. That is not a courtesy, that was going to be done anyways.Business Response

I was contacted by mail from a 3rd party collection service from a balanced owed to the university. So, I called the university in reference to this letter, and was told they forwarded my balance to a collection agency, that my account with the ********************** was no longer with the university. I questioned the representative, and explained how I always kept my line of communication open, and they have my phone, my student portal, and my personal e-mail on file. I had not one time since I withdrew in April, to my knowledge had a outstanding balance, and I requested to know on their records when they contacted me to discuss this matter, and all they could see, is that they tried but it was unsuccessful. When I doubled checked my portal before I withdrew after successfully completing ONE of my classes with this college, the class was paid for, and so was their fees, whatever they charged, and when, is beyond me. I also stated that I was sent a $1 refund after this course was completed, if I owed, why was I sent a refund? made perfect sense.. They stated that I was current that was why I received that refund. Well, ok, why send the $1 out, and then boom a few months later, theirs a balance due? Seems to me, once I decided I didn't think this college was a good fit for me, and I withdrew and I wanted the rest of my remaining aide returned to lender, after a few months after I completed one course, that they decided to leave me with a charge as a punishment? Im not sure, whatever the case may be. I think this method is unprofessional, and should be looked into, because things paid for once, don't go adding balances that the student isnt aware of afterwards! And, expecially during this time, when inflation is high, it would make sense to work with the student, instead of charge them off without warning over a $76 dollar fee... shame on you all! I even contacted your resolution center, and they didn't even take the time to overlook things, or call me to help! Will not recommend this college!Business Response

I received a letter today, September 5th, from the resolution department that since I only completed ONE course, that per the universities standards, the university re-calculated the debt after the coursework was completed. And, it goes on to say this is how the debt was generated. Therefore, I had no knowledge like I stated before of this debt, or how it came to play. Because this debt was created several months after completing ONE course with the university. No matter what the policy is with one course, three courses, so fourth. once, something is paid for, no one should be going back into an any account, and re-calculating anything, and adding more fees, when a zero balance was shown on the student portal. Whatever amount was generated was solely done by the university. It was not on fees that were from a course, or technology fees, etc. So in that reasoning, I am not obligated to pay this debt. I also have yet to see where their has been notifications concerning the debt prior to me calling in two weeks ago to question a letter from a collection agency, that I have only ONE letter concerning this debt from, and no prior mail concerning this issue!

The university has yet to correct this concern, instead I am hassled for this balance instead of them looking into this further. AS, I STATED EARLIER ON, I asked them for the documentation of proof when this debt became valid, and wanted to know the method they communicated this through before they decided to write me off, and stated they said their record didnt show how, but that they just see contact was made, but this was not verified.Initial Complaint

I started attending University of Phoenix in Jan 2023. We recently received our student loan disbursment of excess funds for the fall session and there was a huge error made in mine. I have submitted tuition assistance reimbursement from my employer totaling $4616.00 that should have been deducted from my tuition amount. What little that did not cover would have been covered by my student loans, and the rest should have been refunded to me. I received a refund of $503.00. I have sent emails asking about the error and what will be done to rectify this but I have received no response. My next class is supposed to start tomorrow but I honestly don't know if I want to continue with this school. The spring session I received a disbursement of over $1000 so I do not know how it can be less this time, since previously I had not used any tuition assistance from my employer. I would like the correct amount returned to me.Business Response
