On 3/8/22, I engaged Wastvedt to prepare my taxes for tax season 2021, signing a "Letter of Engagement," clearly stating the services to be rendered for that specific tax year. I also requested their assistance in amending my previous 2 tax years due to overpaid taxes, which they planned to do after end of tax season. I paid a total of $725 for preparation of a simple tax return for 2021. Considering the high charges of their service, I informed them I decided not to proceed with the amendments as the cost of their services would outweigh the return. For tax season 2022, I self-prepared my taxes, filing them mid Feb. To my surprise, on 5/31/23, I received an email invoice from Wastvedt, charging me $175 for: "Calculation of 2022 tax liability in advance of preparation due to timing ahead of the deadline. Advise client of liabilities due and gave option to pay in advance if appropriate. Protection from IRS/CA notices and unnecessary correspondence. I immediately contacted the company to inquire about this charge, speaking with *****************************************, who informed that Wastvedt had filed a tax extension on my behalf without my permission, claiming it was done to "protect" me since they had not received any communication from me indicating that I did not require their services for Tax Season 2022. I was not made aware, either through their communications or the Letter of Engagement, that I needed to terminate their services to avoid future charges for services I did not agree to or request.I requested this charge be cancelled. Franscesca offered to reduce the fee and informed the charge would be forwarded to a collections agency if unpaid. Per my request, she emailed me a copy of the Letter of Engagement for tax season 2021. I followed up with an email on 6/1/2023, reiterating my position and highlighting the terms specified in the signed Letter of Engagement, but received no response until 3 wks later when I received a copy of the original invoice by mail.
