Our furnace stopped working on 11/2. We called around and were able to schedule someone from Calibrating Air and they thought it was the circuit board. They did state that it was possible that would not completely fix the problem but they thought there was a good chance because they were getting a reading from something. So we told them to go ahead because we were looking at a $1200 repair fee versus an $8200 replacement fee. The board did not work at all and we are in need of a new furnace but we had to pay $1,290 for the $119 visit. The next day, I had another company come out to give me a quote and he informed me that I was totally ripped off for the part. He showed me on his phone that the part should cost around $640 and he told me that he makes a profit when he sells it for $640. So they basically are pocketing around $600 for selling us a part that didn't resolve our issue. And we are out $1290. I can't believe that a company would try to rip people off so badly when they have no heat in their house during the winter. With today's diagnostic tools, they should have been able to pinpooint the issue. I expected that they were professional and selling us a part for fair market value. I understand they need to mark things up but pocketing around $600 on a part that did absolutely nothing for us? This is how they stay in business? Other reviews mentionned that they were severely overcharging. And they justify it by saying they need to do this to stay in business. We beleive now that the owner told the tech to sell us the $1200+ part and told him to tell us they thought it would work because the tech was calling his "boss" while at our house. Then they try to reel you in to buy a furnace and offer you half back of the overpriced item. These are unfair business practices and they present themselves as professionals when they are no more than thieves taking advantage of anyone who has the misfortune to call them.

On Sept. 26 th I had Calibrating Air come service my ****. I was told the price was $189. The serviceman came and cleaned the **** and showed me an ignitor that in his opinion might be going out. He offered to replace it. I asked how much the part is. He quoted $294. I said that sounded rather expensive for such a simple looking part. I said okay to replace it. My bill was $468. with a $15. discount. After the technician left I looked up the part on the internet and found multiple places the part could be bought for less than $35. It took less than a minute to change the part. I think this is very deceitful to overcharge that much for a part. I can understand a markup but not to that amount. I was already paying for the service charge. I called the company and spoke to an owner. He related his business almost failed during the pandemic and the only way he could stay afloat was to charge these prices. I said I felt cheated and didn't think overcharging was the way to stay in business. He offered no solution. I think I am *********** at least a $230. refund or he can come get his part and keep it. This is fraud of a senior citizen.

First things first, we do NOT take advantage of seniors or any of our clients for ANY reason (age, ***, race, etc). The technician who went to her house will be a senior in 3 years! Also the totality of his visit was 2 hours and 7 minutes (See GPS screenshot). She called us out to clean & check her furnace ($189). Part of our service is to check for anything that could become a problem. Our tech found her hot surface ignitor was approx 22 years old and out of spec. It should have a resistance range of around ***** ohms. Hers tested at 85 ohms. We suggested replacing it before it fails and leaves her without heat. We quoted her $294.54 before the $15 discount ($279.54). If you do a quick ****** search of the average cost to replace an ignitor, you will find they range from 90 at the lowest to $400 at the highest, averaging 100 to 250. So, after knowing the price, she agreed to have us replace it. The new one tested at 55 ohms. We completed the work that she requested and did not perform the other suggested services that she declined. She signed the invoice and paid for the service. After we left she called to inform us that she searched Amazon and found the cost of the "part" online. I promptly called her back to explain the difference of "parts" online versus the on-site service we provided (Amazon did not identify the problem in the first place, nor will they send a highly qualified technician to install and test the part. Also they will not come back out if it fails and replace it for free under warranty), but she started getting angry with me and hung up as I was trying to gay goodbye. She called again requesting a refund. I responded with a polite, apologetic email (See screenshot) to try to better explain. I don't know how else to explain the difference between a service business and an online retailer. We are NOT a retail parts distributer.

I am rejecting this response because: I did pay for the service I asked for, clean and inspect the furnace.  That was one fee.  Part of the service is to check for any issues.  I was told the ignitor "might" go out and it was suggested I  put a new one in.  I was totally shocked when I was told the price but I trusted them to do a fair job at a fair price.  The technician did not have to make a second trip out to replace the ignitor, he was already here so no need to pay another trip charge.  I could buy the ignitor and change it myself for $35.  I'm pretty handy.  I have to wonder how much Calibrating Air actually paid for the part they charged me $294.  That's highway robbery.  How can do business like this?  I will not accept anything other than a partial refund on the item. How about they show an invoice of how much they actually paid for the igniter.  If I can buy it for $35. I'm sure they paid less.

      Sincerely,

We did not charge a "second trip fee", The $294 was the cost you agreed to for us to make the repair. Job complete. It is the same flat-rate price we charge everyone for this repair no matter how long or quick it takes. No matter if we have to drive to get the part or order it and return a different day or if we happen to stock it on our vans. It is the same flat rate.

If you want to repair or clean your furnace moving forward, then you are more than welcome to do so. I'm sure you are more than capable. The reality is you did not make this choice, you called an experienced licensed professional. We do charge you parts and mark-up, and labor and overhead as I mentioned before. There is also profit or else no HVAC companies would exist, or any businesses for that matter. You would not have a furnace if is wasn't for a "for-profit business who decided to manufacture it. Nor would you possess the computer apparatus in which you have so filed a complained on. You will not get a refund. There is no more discussion.

I am rejecting this response because: This is the same excuse they sent earlier.  It's too bad they feel the only way a business can survive is to overcharge customers. I am through with this company and will spread the word best I can for others to not use them either.

      Sincerely,
