Denver Eye Surgeons is operating a fraudulent business violating FTC rules that prohibit optometrists and ophthalmologists from charging fees to receive a written copy of glasses/contacts prescriptions ($80 per script in this case). They need to be investigated and charged with fraud and deceptive practices.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We would like to offer some clarification regarding the refraction fee and the difference between the types of refractions performed in our clinic. A diagnostic refraction is often performed as part of a medical eye exam to help determine visual function and identify any medical causes for vision changes. However, this is not always intended to result in a finalized prescription for glasses. A finalized refraction, which results in a written prescription for new glasses or contact lenses, is a separate, non-covered service as defined by most insurance providers.

This service requires additional time and precision to finalize a prescription suitable for eyewear, which is why it carries a separate fee. We follow FTC guidelines closely, which allow for a reasonable charge for performing a refraction when it is not part of a covered medical diagnosis or treatment. The charge is not for providing a copy of the prescription, but for the actual service of determining the final prescription.

When a medical eye appointment is scheduled, the doctor performs a diagnostic refraction. This helps assess how vision is functioning, which is especially important when there are concerns like blurred vision or eye health issues. To complete the process and provide a finalized prescription, we need to schedule a refraction appointment with a patient. This is considered a vision service and is not typically covered by medical insurance.

However, we are committed to your satisfaction with our services. We deeply apologize if this process was not correctly explained, and we will be reaching out to make this right. Thank you, The Team at Denver Eye Surgeons

Can't connect exceot by call center. 2 weeks.later and no call back. Personally go to location to make appt. but giant line literally out the door into parking lot. I mention that the company who owns the place must only be concerned about making money. A fellow in line says, "I'll double that!" Another lady turns around and says "I'll triple that!" Terrible. Get to person and they tell me I missed my appt. Never received any message or call. Checked my contact info and it's all correct. I don't trust them any longer. Horrible.

On May 2, 2023 my spouse received a Laser procedure to one of her eyes by Denver Eye Surgeons for Glaucoma. We pre-paid an amount of $330.53 for this procedure. Subsequent ******** from Denver Eye Surgeons to BCBS Michigan (handled by Colorado **** Anthem) revealed a total responsibility on our part of $208.37 plus an office copay of $20.00 totaling $228.37.I have made a total of four calls to Denver Eye Surgeons regarding the outstanding balance due us of $102.16; one in June, one in July, August 18 and October 26. Each time I was advised that Denver Eye Surgeons and Anthem are in a billing dispute that could impact our total obligation for this billing. On the last call I was transferred to a supervisor who never picked up or called me back. I have advised Denver Eye Surgeon staff that our total obligation would be 2% of whatever final billing may be in dispute. I believe the item in dispute is a $600 charge that Anthem has refused to pay. Two percent of this worst-case scenario is $12.and will likely be much less as I doubt Denver Eye Surgeons will receive the full $600 billing in dispute. Denver Eye Surgeons staff advised me that I am going to have to wait until this billing dispute is resolved before receiving any refund. I should note that my wife and I have been Denver Eye Surgeon patients for years and have never failed to pay an amount due. Denver Eye Surgeons has unethically retained just over $100 of our money for no other reason than they can. I consider this pre-payment process predatory and unfair.

This review is only for the *********************** not the Dr's. (who are absolutely wonderful). If I could, I would give the ********************** a zero-star rating. I've never had such a bad experience with a business in ******************* as I have with them. To summarize, I ordered my lenses from a new prescription on July 10th and did not receive my glasses back until Sept 2nd. It was a nightmare, do not use them! Very unprofessional, blamed the Dr.'s for wrong prescriptions, which was a lie, didn't expedite when they said they would. Never answered phones or returned calls.

At cataract surgery pre-op visit I was urged to buy their eye care kit which had to be paid out-of-pocket at that moment. I was told the doctor could prescribe medication for after-surgery care; however, ******** or insurance would not cover it and it could cost $200-300. The alternative was to buy their kit for $79 but I had to pay for it right then, which I did. The last thing they did at that visit was to take a blood pressure reading which turned out to be higher than their threshold for surgery approval, so I was told I had to get a clearance from my primary care doctor. This was two months into the process: after an initial exam from the eye doctor, and reading documents about the surgery that I was given, and finally this pre-op visit which included going over medical info I had already given them. At no time did anyone inform me that having high blood pressure could be an issue. I have been on medication for hypertension all my adult life, and while it is generally under control, it can spike a higher reading under stress which this visit turned out to be the case (168/94). I find it curious that only after I paid for their kit did the blood pressure issue come up. When they contacted my primary care doctor, he wouldn't sign off on cataract surgery unless I came in for a visit even though I had just seen him four months earlier--nothing had changed in that time nor in the year or so I have been seeing him. I asked the eye center if I had his med clearance and my blood pressure reading on the day of surgery was still higher than their threshold (which is 165/90), would they go ahead with the surgery. I was told there was no guarantee. At that point I cancelled the surgery because the whole process felt too much like a scam, and though I said I would return their "kit" (unopened or used in any way), they would not refund my money. ******** was billed $150 for that pre-op visit in which no doctor or nurse was even involved. Bad business practice at the least.
