On Tuesday, May 27th 2025, the car of my Guest, ****** *****, was towed from the visitor lot of the ******* ******* ********* ******* located at 1*** ******** ***, **** ********* ** *****. The car was not in any violation of posted rules, had been there for under 24 hours, and was within the visitor zone. At roughly 4:30pm, ****** and myself realized his white 2012 ****** ******* was missing from the visitor lot. The car was towed ~42 miles to the MyHoopty towing lot in ******** **. The unlawful towing across the state resulted in charges of $5.65 for each mile over 2 miles. Including base rates and tax, MyHoopty demanded $427 in cash to release the vehicle. They do not accept any form of payment other than cash. I have previously had my Ford Explorer towed from ******* ******* by MyHoopty in a similar manner, with no recourse except for some reimbursement from my landlord on a rent payment to the order of $200 because of my complaints.
I drove ****** to pick up the vehicle from ******** at 7:15PM on the same day of towing. The employee that towed and released the vehicle to ****** was rude and dismissive when on the phone to schedule the pickup. And while I was sitting in my car outside of the lot's office with the car window down, he came up to my window with no prompting, pointed at my parking sticker and stated that "your parking sticker is coming loose". I then asked if he intends to tow my vehicle again, at which point he stated "I just might". A verbal argument ensued as he walked away to release the Subaru that ****** had payed to retrieve. Threatening to tow my vehicle without any proper cause, because there is little recourse to fight it, just after towing my guest's vehicle with no proper cause, is not acceptable. This business is taking advantage of people by towing with no justification, towing from dozens of miles away to inflate prices, and threatening retaliation using the same actions. They should be closed permanently.Business Response

Transaction occurred on 11/12/24. I am a case manager for a state program that assists elderly clients with receiving in-home services. Every 6 months I am required by the state to visit my clients for a reassessment. I was able to secure 2 client visits at the same location, *** ****** *** ** ******** (******** **** ******* *******). With my client roster, I have been frequently visiting this location over the last year and a half with no issues on parking. After arriving at the complex I had parked in an area that did not indicate it was not permitted to visitors and later took video evidence. After my visits I was surprised to find my car was missing and was given a number to call by their housing management. I was again surprised by the fact that my car was taken all the way to ********* ** to their Mr.Hoopty business. My father had to pick me up while volunteering at our local soup kitchen and we arrived there much later, inconveniencing my other clients I meant to visit for the day. After explaining my situation to the staff and informing him I had taken a video of where I parked, he did not seem to care or offer any kind of solution, only that I can't take out my car until I pay the ludicrous amount of 347.05. Unfortunately I became irate, but only due to the robbery I was feeling knowing the price was due to my car being towed such a ridiculous distance from where it was as if there was nowhere else it could've been taken. I finally gave in and handed them $350 and was not offered any change, something I let slide since I wanted to leave asap. From my quick search online, there are more than numerous complaints against their business throughout the years of similar nature where cars are towed when their owners are away from them for a few moments. I pray someone sees this and helps to answer for these injustices that ripple through these extortion actions. Please let me know of any steps that will be taken to my email and thank you for your time.Initial Complaint

The towing company illegally charged me more than the legal towing amount. They also towed me for a non legal reason for “parking head in” in a visitor spot. There was no signage present on the property either.Initial Complaint

Misrepresentation of policy. I.e. Sign Posted on side of building complex with myhoopty llc email stating visitors parking rules . No designated clearly visible visitor parking markings in lot. Also sharing lot with closed Diner but claiming jurisdiction over those parking spaces as well. It seems myhoopty and property management have some kind of arrangement where they tow any vehicle in lot to a tow yard 26 miles away., and charge the mileage. According to myhoopty representative, they operate with a secondary procedural policy. Which is not listed in sign attached to complex. There is a severe lack of clarity and that is what adds to the confusion. It seems it would be an easy fix to remove the sign , amend the sign , post other signage which would make it clear to
All who enter the lot, where or if there is parking available! The fact that they share the parking lot with another business., yet tow from the whole lot speaks to the kind of business practices on display. Yes according to them the BBB is a dinosaur! But a staple of validity. Which in this case myhoopty doesn’t share its principles. I’ve attached documentation of the whole lot. Including sign attached to the building complex which is very misleading! Along with the lack of visibility of any “marked” parking spaces. Visitor or otherwise. The handicapped signs I guess they couldn’t work around those.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: I am the owner of the vehicle. It is a business vehicle. 1 thing has nothing to do with the other. Fix your signage. The signage is a misappropriation, and is not within the law. You are operating in ambiguity! You know this. The condescending way in which you speak to the people who’s cars you tow, confirm this. It is sad that within the climate of this country , financially or otherwise, companies choose to do business this way. You have spotters that alert you to people in the driveway. You send your tow trucks which are close by already. Because there is no way that your tow truck gets to new ******* ** within the 20 minutes one takes to deliver groceries upstairs or drop off an elderly family member. Reprehensible the way “myhoopty” does business. Thirsty, towing someone’s car 25+ miles to another town, and charging them for mileage. There are plenty of other tow companies in new ******* **, that are closer. Again, you can say you operate within the law, and with integrity. But the actions say something different. REMOVE THE SIGN! Simple. But you don’t because it allows you to operate in confusion. Then you only take cash! And don’t give change… absurd!! It’s 2023 and you only take cash and give no change. Let’s be serious. I am not satisfied with this decision. My name is ******** ******* **** *** is my business. Thank you.
Sincerely,
**** ***Initial Complaint
