On March 25th, the assistant / vet tech (not sure of her position) Kaitlin took Ellie’s general information in a small exam room. Dr. Marc ********* was the vet on call.
Next, he told Kaitlin to take Ellie to the back and “Clean her up.” I heard Ellie squeal in the back. I cringed. I heard Dr. ********* say something about razor burn, he made a comment, but I am not 100% clear what he said. When Kaitlin brought Ellie back to the little waiting room, I immediately noticed her entire back was fire-engine red. The vet came back into the room, and I asked him, “Is this razor burn or her skin?” He said, “Her skin.” I freaked. I knew this was going to be bad.
He gave me instructions on how to use the meds he prescribed for Ellie. Why would Ellie need a painkiller med for an anal gland expression? It was like going in to get your nails trimmed and you come out with missing fingers. She was pacing, wanting to sit but unable and was begging me to leave. I was anxious to leave too.
Ellie has gotten her anal glands expressed many times over the years. Whenever she goes to the groomer, her anal glands are expressed. She has never had a reaction or issue afterwards.
This was more serious than razor burn. Her anus was lacerated, as well as the area around her anus and underneath her tail. I believe whoever did this to her, did not use a razor guard and took off a layer of skin too. It was not necessary to shave her to express her anal glands. That night I thought she might die.I was desperately trying to find out how I could help her. I called an online emergency veterinarian service that took my call around midnight.
The next few days, I stayed very close to Ellie and didn’t leave the house. When she was in pain, she flopped around on the floor like a fish out of water. Many nights, she was very uncomfortable, and we were up all night. She was hot, panted and made doggy groaning sounds. The emotional stress was unbearable.
