I created an as, paid for it, it was confirmed, and posted. After a few days, the ad was no longer there. I contacted customer support, but no one could seem to solve the problem. At this point, I just want a refund for the $49 ad I bought but isnt helping me sell my car.

I was searching for a car on auto trader and found one for $5151. It was a 2023 ****** Camry that is being sold by Lodi ******. I contacted them through auto trader and they said it was not the correct price and that auto trader was wrong. They told me to contact the BBB to resolve this. From what Ive read mistake or not, that price has to be honored in the state of CA. I have a screenshot of the price and car from before and after they changed it proving the original price they put the car up for.

      Business Response

Thank you for contacting Autotrader.com via the BBB.   Autotrader takes this complaint very seriously.  We have published our pricing guidelines for dealers here:

      ********************************************************************************************************

Please note, Autotrader does NOT change the price on dealer listings posted on our site.  The price on our site, is the price supplied to us by the dealer.

As Autotrader simply advertises the vehicles for this dealership, we are unable to offer any compensation.   We can of course have the dealer update the price of the vehicle on our site (as you state the dealer told you this was a mistake).  To do this, we'll need the *** of the vehicle listed.  Otherwise, to have the dealer honor the price, you will need to contact the dealership directly.

I paid for an ad on Autotrader website to advertise a car that I am trying to sell. Every day whenever I would login to my account I would go to the "Manage my ad" page to look at the statistics that show how many times my ad has showed up in searches and how many times my ad was viewed per 24 hour period. For the first *************************************************************** search results no less than ***** times and as many as *****+ times and that my ad had been viewed 75+ times and as many as 300 times per day! I was curious as to why, with those kind of statistics, I had not received any questions at all about my car from prospective buyers. So I sent an email to support at Autotrader inquiring about this. After receiving a reply from support, I logged into my account on ********************** and was immediately met with a popup that asked if I would take part in a survey about Autotrader, which I agreed to do. One question in the survey asked me which type of device I use to access the Autotrader site. Odd question I thought but I answered honestly. The very next time I logged into the site was the following day. Upon clicking on "manage my ad" I see that in the past 24 hours my ad has showed up in ZERO search results and has been viewed ZERO times in the past 24 hours. So the following day I login again and see the same thing. So now I'm supposed to believe that my ad was showing up in thousands of searches per ************************************************** the same 24 hours to now all of the sudden it's not being viewed or showing up in search results at all? This is very odd. I want a full refund of the price paid for the ad, in duplicate due to the shady activity of the website. It's very obvious that those in control of the website do NOT want you to sell your car to another person, instead they want you to get frustrated or desperate for money and take their SUPER LOWBALL instant offer for your car so that they can resell it at triple what they paid.

      Business Response

      Date: 09/09/2024

      *********************************,

We apologize for the experience with a lack of leads you had with Autotrader.   Your listing was placed at the beginning of August 2024.   It's very likely that even though the price is inline with other 2007 **** Mustangs, the fact that the vehicle vibrates going faster than 60 is a reason it did not attract any leads on our platform.

The reason for the listing showing no activity for searches as it was removed from our site by the seller.

We apologize we are unable to offer a refund for this listing.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 09/09/2024

      Complaint: 22243747

I am rejecting this response because:
There are many vehicles listed on Autotrader that are in far worse condition than mine. Autotrader's claim that the vibration over 60mph being the sole reason that no one had any questions or interest in the vehicle is ridiculous at best. My asking price was stated in the ad as being "negotiable" because of the problems I described. It's a 17 year old car. I've owned, bought and sold over 80 vehicles in my lifetime of 60 years and never have I had an experience such as this.

Further, the claim made by Autotrader that the vibration is the sole cause for my ad garnering no leads does not explain why my ad was showing up in thousands of searches and was being viewed hundreds of times every day since placing the ad until the very day after I  completed the "Survey" on the Autotrader site, for the next 2 days after the survey my ad was suddenly showing up in 0 searches and was viewed 0 times. Said survey also asked what platform I use to access the website. Interesting, very interesting.

I want a refund. Your statistics are skewed, you obviously want to insult sellers by offering such low ball instant offers, and you tamper with the statistics and affect search results. I further believe that Autotrader should be thoroughly investigated for improper business practices as it is my belief that you influence a private seller's ability to sell their vehicle by influencing the search results of prospective buyers. It is my belief that this is done in a manner as to affect a private seller negatively and resulting in frustration and the feeling of wasting time, in order to obtain their vehicle at an extremely low price compared to value and/or frustrate the seller to the point of trading the vehicle in to a dealer, at a huge loss vs selling to a private individual.

      I want a refund.
      Sincerely,

      *********************************

      Complaint: 22243747

I am rejecting this response because:

I removed the listing 2 days AFTER the statistics began showing 0 results and 0 views. As I stated. Please read my previous statement and understand that I was seeing the statistics on the "Manage my ad" page. Every time that I logged in, which was daily since placing the ad, I had been seeing that my ad was showing in thousands of search results and was being viewed hundreds of times every 24 hours! The statistic changed daily, but every day the statistic showed thousands of search results and hundreds of views for my ad. Am I being clear enough? Your statistics changed AFTER I took your survey. Suddenly my ad wasn't showing up in searches. So after 2 days of 0 results, I decided to remove the ad.

Explain to me how my ad was showing in thousands of search results and was being viewed hundreds of times daily for 25+ days and then suddenly it's not even showing up in search results at all even though the statement in the ad that the car "vibrates over 60mph" was mentioned from the start. It didn't effect the results for 25+ days and then suddenly it did? Is that your claim?

      I want a refund!

Autotrader closed the ad that I purchased to sell my truck without provocation. In June I received an email/message from Autotrader stating that someone had messaged me about my ad. That is how their platform works. I pay them to place the ad and they use a secure messaging system that goes through them and when someone messages about my ad they email or message me letting me know someone has sent me a message. They also charge a percentage when I sell the truck because it's done over their platform. I did not receive any other messages after that or so I thought. That was in June. During this time I had two back surgeries, when I logged in today I discovered they had closed my account because I hadn't logged in, however, I had messages in there from July that they did not notify me about. I can not read or respond to the messages because they closed my ad and told me I must pay another 60 dollars to reopen the ad and see the messages.

***,  Thank you for contacting Autotrader regarding your listing for an F350.  Our records indicate that listing was purchased on 4/2024.   Ads on our platform are valid for 30 days, however we do allow sellers to continue to list their ad on our platform after 30 days provided they remain engaged with potential buyers for up to a year.

We also see you were actively engaging with buyers.  However on May 31, it appears that messages from potential buyers were no longer being replied to, including someone who offered to purchase your truck.

As you can likely imagine, shopping for a vehicle, spending hours or even days online to find the perfect vehicle can be tedious, and for sellers who stop using the platform for an extended period of time, their ads are removed to prevent shoppers from messaging sellers who are no longer interested in using the site.  As it was nearly 90 days since messages to your ad were replied to, we are unable to reactivate your listing.

      We apologize for any inconvenience.

Placed an ad today, August 20, for $49 to sell my Jeep. Immediately contacted by a scammer who ultimately threatened me within AUTOTRADERs communication platform. Within two hours of being live I removed the ad because of the obvious problems exhibited by AUTOTRADERs lack of any real protection offered sellers in their system. The fine print states they dont monitor communications, although they openly advertise how safe they are as a website for selling. Its all hyped BS. They do absolutely nothing for the seller other than to take their money then hide behind small print and policy. Id like to be refunded for this ridiculous experience. Alternatively, if management chooses to ignore my request and point to the notion they cannot control who uses their site, I plan on placing business reviews on every auto enthusiast forum I can find until satisfied Ive done treble damage to these jokers.

They will not unsubscribe me, violating FTC guidelines. Their link at the bottom of emails has had a 404 error, and they keep emailing almost daily.Their customer service team said to log into an account - I never made an account, just inquired into a vehicle. I escalated and they told me to call their customer service number. Aggravating - they are not allowed to send emails repeatedly without consent the CAN-SPAM Act prohibits this.

On 7-9-2024 I paid Autotrader $99.95 for a 5 month online ad. I received an email from them confirming I was all set and ad was up. For 2 days after I could not find my car listing, then after the 3rd day it was up. Shortly thereafter I received an email from Autotrader saying I had an interested buyer. I replied via Autotrader email. The next email I received was from this potential buyer who was a SCAMMER, now using a different email address. I contacted Autotrader regarding this issue and not protecting my privacy/my personal email address and asked for a refund. No response. I emailed again, received a response and was told NO REFUNDS and that I should not reply to the Autotrader email from buyers and to created a new email address. This is absurd! This is the only company I know of and used (as there have been many) that do not protect their customers email addresses. Normally, all you have to do is reply to an interested party via the companies email and they then send reply to buyer via their email address to protect their customers personal info. I then received yet another email from scammer who is now using a 3rd (different) email address who contacted me directly to my inbox. I asked Autotrader again for a refund, answer "NO". I called Autotrader today for one last effort for a refund who spoke to a senior member supervisor twice. First I was told no refunds, 2nd time, they will give me a partial refund of 50% of the price I paid. From the time ad was visible to time I asked for a refund was 16 days. I want a refund and to also warn potential customers that ********************** will not protect your privacy, they will not place ad on the date they say they will, good luck in hearing back from them when there is an issue and they will not refund your money when you do have an issue. BUYER BEWARE! I do not recommend this company. If you value your time, money, privacy and sanity go elsewhere!

      Complaint: 22059847

I am rejecting this response because: Autotrader does not mention when placing an ad that they DO NOT value my privacy nor do they mention those responding to sellers ads will be victim of scammers having access to sellers/customers personal email addresses via **********************. Since this scammer uses different email addresses there is no way for me to block them as emails will keep coming. Autotrader since causing me these privacy issues (which will never go away or stop) should have at the very least given me a prorated refund for the 2 weeks ad was on their site. Autotrader in my searches, have very poor ratings for many reasons, many being these scammers. As long as Autotrader gets their money they do not care about their customer experiences. Offering me a 50% discount on an ad I've only had for a couple weeks with another 4.5 months to go is insulting. Autotraders greed and unwillingness to make this right with me is totally unacceptable. If they continue to deny a refund, I will continue to fight this in any and every way I can. It would be in the best interest of this company to just issue me a refund.

      Sincerely,

      ********,

Thank you for reaching out to the BBB regarding your complaint with Autotrader.com.  It appears you were listing the same vehicle that you listed in 2022 on our site, a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass for $11,900.

We have researched your case and found that your listing is not eligible for a refund as it was posted to our site, and is still currently active on our site.  A refund of 50% was offered by our frontline as a courtesy.

      Date: 08/07/2024

      Complaint: 22059847

I am rejecting this response because: First of all, I sent you an email stating I made a mistake on placing another ad with your company as I meant to place with Autohunter as I was never planning on doing business with Autotrader again. I also mentioned in an email that you sent me an email confirming my ad was placed and it was up and live on 7-7. That was not true. I looked for 2 days and it was NOT up. Three days later than you told me ad was up it finally was. Your company is highly deceptive and your greed is astonishing! Your bad business all around. Mentioning that I placed an ad with you here on the BBB in 2022 has nothing to do with the current situation and is yet again an invasion of my privacy. You have no shame! I have all the emails between us which will prove the truth. You're trying to spin this somehow back on me. You state my ad is still active, I DO NOT want my ad to be active. I'm waiting for a refund and for you to remove my ad. Your website and order page mention nothing about your privacy policy (there was an error on your site which hid this info. and I took a screenshot) so I have been unable to view your privacy policy. (I'm sure this is done by design) No where does it state on your site that you do not protect your customers personal email addresses and only after the fact when I reached out to you I was told customer emails are public. Everything about your company is deceptive by design. I'll be taking out an ad in my local newspaper, will describe the nightmares of your company, what you've done and haven't done to/for me and warn innocent people of how you operate. I will be canceling my ad today since you will not and will expect a full refund for all my trouble. Now, if you do not offer any refunds to your customers, it's your responsibility to tell us that you/your site will not protect our privacy as you left that out. My personal email is no good now due to the scammers who have it because of Autotrader and will continue to inbox me as you cannot get rid of them!

      Sincerely,

I purchased a Mini ****** from Autotraders on July 10, 2024 and I feel like this was a huge mistake on my part. The entire place seemed very aloof, like they didn't care one way or another. Nobody returned a single call I made. Most info I got was from the seller, who, as it turns out, lied like crazy. She said there was a barely noticeable dent in the rear, as the pictures show, >ts rather large and pieces are broken off. Also, the drivers side key takes about 40 seconds to unlock. This is bad for me, my back is injured and I will be getting knee surgery soon. I paid $11,156.00 for this car. This was from a settlement from an accident I was injured in. Having suffered for so long, I thought I would treat myself.. it didn't work out that way. On the day they finally delivered it, I was asleep, they never asked for me or any ID from my roommate, so, Technically, I never signed for that car. All I had asked of Autotraders was that they fix the dent and the door. They charged me $1600 to deliver it from ** to SC, so, I feel it's the least they could do. I also think the seller could be a fraud. Her name changed 2 times when we were chatting. I hope you can help me since nobody else will even try. Thank you, *************************

      *****,
Thank you for contacting Autotrader via the BBB.  Your complaint mentions there was damage to the vehicle..   We have reviewed the listing for the vehicle you purchased and found that the damage to the back right corner was viewable in the photos for the original listing.   Additionally, we have verified the person who sold the car was the actual owner as you suggested the seller was a fraud in your initial complaint to the BBB.

      Customer Answer

I have requested a copy of the original ad several times now and I'm told I have to wait 10 days. The 10 days are up, I believe they just don't want me to see it. The only pictures I can locate always leave that dented part out. I said the seller was a liar, she said it was barely noticeable. I sent autotraders PSX Pictures of every angle. Every time I send pics, the emails are returned to me as undeliverable. Not one person at either of those places took even2 minutes to talk to me and explain how they do things. I would have gotten protection on it when I saw it loaded on a truck on a Friday but still had no delivery date. And why does it not matter to them that they dropped it off without my signature or even the knowledge that it was here. I still haven't been able to drive it, since I never know if th3 door will unlock. I am so sorry I went there, this is all that I own now! They don't care about the satisfaction of anyone, it would appear. I am beyond unhappy!

Today i got a letter from them telling me that they want something from Law Enforcement. I spent the entire day gathering info for you but nothing is working tonight. I dont know what morr i can do. I was hurt in a car accident and it cost me everything. Autotraders can afford to fix my car, I cannot and will be forced to sell it. Do you have any recourse now?
      thank you, *****

I purchased a vehicle on 6/3/24. I have waited almost 7-weeks to receive the title for this vehicle. I have contacted AutoTrader several times asking for the status and have been given various excuses from seller delays to technical difficulties. on 7/12/24 I was assured that the title was mailed that day via Priority Mail and as of today 7/17/24 it has still not arrived. Like all buyers through this company I was required to pay a document handling fee. I am concerned that I may have been conned.

I am rejecting this response because:

This explains fully the problem with this business. They claim to not know me yet this very day I received another temporary plate because of their delays. Whether it's incompetence or dishonesty it's no way to treat customers.

      Sincerely,
