This company *****. Super difficult to get someone on the phone. The customer service representative sounded like she had no soul. They charged a $50 fee for rolling over my distributions to another financial institution.

Principal customer service is terrible, seemingly from outsourcing their customer service functions and from poor website maintenance.I had a small 401k match balance from a previous employer held with Principal, which I wanted to rollover to my preferred financial service provider. What should have been a very simple process that takes 3-4 steps online with Vanguard was a nightmare with Principal from start to finish. The first issue was my incorrect address in their website, which I updated through the site. It failed to update after weeks, so I called. I figured I would initiate the rollover since I had to call, and explained that my address was incorrect. The agent understood, but still accidently generated my check with the wrong address. I was frustrated, but arranged to pick it up from that location rather than go through "several steps to correct it." Then I found out I was subject to a 30-something dollar service fee to rollover my own money. No other institutions I've worked with would do this - you're not a loan shark, Principal - you really want to nickel and dime your customers over basic standard operating procedures? My request also wasn't handled at the 30-day **** for some reason, so I decided to cancel the whole request and handle it on my own later and do it without the ridiculous fee. So, I called and cancelled the request. I kept getting emails about my rollover, so I called AGAIN and was ASSURED on a second call it was cancelled. Not surprisingly, the check showed up a few weeks later at the wrong address. At this point I give up, but I will never use Principal services again.

The communication from Principal is lacking and needs much improvement. My doctor put me on STD and this is a benefit with my employer. The process was manageable for the first 6 weeks but it all changed when my doctor extended it for another 6 weeks. I had to call each and every time to get a status because they werent paying. Each time I called they would say they need more documents from my drs. I would reach out to my drs to get what they need and all was provided. This cycle of me calling and them saying they need more, has continued since the end of 10/23 (still no payment). I have called and emailed my representative multiple times with no response. Their lack of communication has delayed my claim and I am now afraid my claim is closed since they have been dragging this out. We are well past the 6 week extension at this point. This type of practice is very unprofessional and has caused me financial distress. It shouldnt be this difficult to access benefits paid for by employers when the individuals dr has placed them on medical leave; it causes more stress and delays recovery. This type of practice is not only unprofessional but its manipulative and misrepresents what this benefit provides.

I have not been able to login to my account since October or November. I already had a 401k with principal so I decided to open a IRA account I also decided to enroll for online access to better manage my account. After a couple days had passed I tried to login to fund my account via wire. I got a message saying my account has been locked. I have called and sometimes can’t get through. Please unlock my account.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH PRINCIPAL.....They will NOT wire transfer your funds to your new retirement plan if you take a new job.....Instead, they drop it in the mail like any other letter and if it gets lost or stolen THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE!!!! I think the Courts will disagree, and I might soon find out because a week after claiming they mailed it, it is still not received. Yet, "THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE." This is a rogue and unprofessional company, When I called to inquire about the status of these funds, I got someone on the phone with children screaming and playing in the background. This is the worst experience of my life with any financial related institution.

They lost thousands of my retirement dollars during the process of trying to roll over money into a different retirement account. Now I have to file for unclaimed property even though its their fault my money is missing. I am now out over $2,000 because of these *****s
