    I recently went to this mechanic after my upper control arm broke. One of the workers quoted me $450 for both labor and the part, saying the job would take about 3 hours. However, when I asked if they had the part in stock, he told me they didn’t and that they’d have to send someone to pick it up — and even then, it might not arrive until the next day. As someone who isn’t from South Chicago and couldn't wait that long, that simply wasn’t an option.
    I took the initiative to call around and locate the correct upper control arm myself. Once I had the part in hand and asked how much it would cost just for labor, he quoted me $250 — and I agreed, not realizing at the time just how badly I was being taken advantage of.
    To make matters worse, when the part was delivered to him, the entire job took less than 30 minutes. His receipt clearly stated that he charges $50 per hour for labor. That math doesn't add up. Even if you round up generously, the labor should not have cost more than $100–$150 — and that’s not even accounting for the fact that I saved him time and money by providing the part myself.
    When I asked if he could adjust the price, especially given that the job took a fraction of the time quoted and I supplied the part, he refused and kept insisting that “he had to go by the book.” I left feeling taken advantage of and frustrated, especially as a woman who trusted this shop to be fair and honest.
    This experience felt like a clear case of price gouging, and I want to warn others — especially those who may not be familiar with car repairs — to proceed with caution. I truly hope I never have to deal with this business again.
