A couple of days ago, I went to work out at the Woodlawn location with one of my friends and he said that I could get a three-day free pass or use one of his. When I arrived, I asked if they could help me set the pass up since I wasn't sure how to and they told me that I wasn't allowed to do that, but I had another friend who did the same exact thing a few days earlier and they okayed it. The guy working didn't allow me to use the three-day pass or the free pass that my friend had. I ended up having to pay $20 for a day pass and after working out, I went back up to the desk to ask if there was another option so that I could get more for my money. He made it seem like my only option was to get a monthly gym membership. Yet again, they did not inform me that I could also get a 10-day pass if I was referred by a friend--which is what my friend ended up doing that same day at the same location within the same hour. It would have been nice if I would have been informed that I could have just used a pass instead of being forced into a monthly membership that had multiple hidden fees that the worker failed to discuss. I already own a gym membership at another gym and I was just trying to spend time with a friend. It is not fair to me that I am stuck paying $60 for a membership to the gym when my friend hasn't had to pay anything at all being in the same exact situation. Something definitely needs to be done about this. I was completely manipulated and taken advantage of. The guy at the front desk was extremely rude and unprofessional. I called a day later I spoke to a lady and explained to her what was going on. she was very snarky as well. After finally getting transferred over to the Genesis I was at, I spoke with the same guy and I asked him why the information was withheld from me but not my friend. He was absolutely no help at all and as soon as I confronted him about the unfairness of the situation he blamed it on someone else. I would like a refund. DO NOT GO HERE!

We thank the customer for his comments. Our club manager who worked with him called him after receiving this review. Our guest pass policies were reviewed with him. Since he had already come to the club prior, he was no longer eligible for the free pass. He seemed to understand why he was charged a drop-in fee after this conversation.

The customer came back to the club later in the day to sign up for a membership. We're sorry if he felt pressured into signing up, but since he did not immediately take this step we have to assume he did so after some thought.

The Lees Summit location in oldham parkway has 3 rules signs posted on their wall, rule number 14 states no camera or video recording in the gym. On Halloween a group of young women came in worh thongs and super hero costumes and literally twerked on the gym equipment for 2 hours while recording their "workout". Recording has been increasing in the gym and no longer wishing to be in the background of peoples workout videos i went to cancel my gym membership. The employee had me fill out a 30 day notice, I asked if we could cancel it effective immediately and he became a belligerent unprofessional and dow right nasty. He informed me that the rules were suggestions, to take it up with corporate if I didn't like it and that he "wasn't in the mood to deal **************" today. After being a daily member for 1.5 years I cannot express how much I dislike this gym and the people that work there ... I've seen 2 fights and at least a dozen shouting matches in the last 5 months ... the equipment is routinely broken and shoddily repaired ... I just want my membership cancelled!

We thank the customer for his review and apologize for any inconvenience during his workouts. We have reviewed his account and do see his comments on his cancellation request.

Per his signed agreement and cancel request, the customer will be responsible for the February 1st dues payment but that will be his last. Again, we're sorry that his experience was not positive and we take his feedback very seriously. We will use it as we strive to get better every day and we wish the member all our best.

I (customer) offered to pay my contract in full for cancelation and was immediately met with hostility. The reoccuring charge will not go through as the account has been closed due to unrelated fraud. I have made 6 phone calls to corporate and sent 4 emails to Genesis club manager and regional vice president on how to comply with paying the contractually owed amount due February 1st. I have recieved only silence and run around from the low level employees answering phones. Given the volume of similar complaints experiencing difficulty canceling contracts and then stopping reoccuring charges from Genesis this would appear to be a routine action, likened to a business tactic. There is no transperancy in the contract, business tactics or rectification to pay amount owed and close account.

We apologize again for any confusion about the member's signed membership agreement and cancellation doc.

Our regional management team has repeatedly attempted to reach out to the customer via email and telephone with no response. We dispute the customer's account of his experience when he cancelled his membership. Our club manager interacted directly with the customer. He remembers the customer as being very angry and hostile at this interaction. The customer did not want to sign the cancel form, but eventually did so, and did not offer to make arrangements to pay the 30-day notice in full, as he states above.

Finally, our team at the club does not have any record of fights, disagreements, or filming of workouts. However, as we previously stated, we appreciate the member's feedback. We hope the member will return our calls or emails and feel we have said all we can in response to this review.

"We apologize again for any confusion about the member's signed membership agreement and cancellation doc. Our regional management team has repeatedly attempted to reach out to the customer via email and telephone with no response."

This is an outright lie. The only interaction from Genesis I have received outside of this BBB complaint was from Mr. ************ 1/19/2023 in which he responded by email with "Justin I don't handle membership issues .. if you tell me what club you're talking about I'll forward it to the right person". I have no voicemails or any other emails from Genesis, and I have searched my spam/junk email folders as well.

"Our club manager interacted directly with the customer. He remembers the customer as being very angry and hostile at this interaction. The customer did not want to sign the cancel form, but eventually did so, and did not offer to make arrangements to pay the 30-day notice in full, as he states above. "

This is also a lie. I was aggravated but remained professional the entire time ... Every statement and questions was immediately interrupted by the alleged club manager who yelled at me that "The rules on the wall are suggestions, not rules". and "If you don't like it call corporate".

"The customer did not want to sign the cancel form, but eventually did so, and did not offer to make arrangements to pay the 30-day notice in full, as he states above." I said "I don't want to cancel in 30 days, I want to cancel now, what is the cost to cancel the contract" ... I am uninterested in he-said she-said with your company, especially if your club manager is the one who publicly berated, interrupted and yelled at me; that is a conflict of interest by literal definition and I am not the only person on BBB with the same complaint from your organization ... Again I am requesting rectification, nothing more .... as is stated in every single email I have sent to your establishment "Once the total amount to close the account and an address to send payment to is received I will get that out in less than 24 hours." ... You have my phone number, physical address and email.

This is adolescent, I have the all the receipts to corroborate my claims. The run around to pay Genesis the money I owe them is beyond ludicrous at this point.

We appreciate the customer's comments and apologize for any confusion about her membership contract.

We have now entered her cancellation per her agreement. Her final dues payment was on 12.20.22 and her membership will end as of 1.19.23.

We thank her for being a Genesis member and wish her all the best.

      Sincerely,

Canceled my membership over 8 months ago. They continued to charge me monthly. Extremely unhelpful over the phone. Had to change my card number. To this day theyre still billing me. Just let me cancel...

We're sorry for any confusion about our cancellation policy. According to his account, we spoke to the customer on 7.2.22 and he said he didn't realize he still had a membership with us. We told him how to cancel per his agreement. After we explained that he needed to stop into any Genesis club to sign his 30-day notice to cancel he said he would be in. We still have no record of his cancel doc.

He called on October 3rd stating that he cancelled his membership "a long time ago." We responded again letting him know we do not have the request required per his signed agreement with us and advised him to please stop in to sign his request.

Since he was several months behind in paying his monthly dues, his membership has now been terminated. We will be happy to help him with a payment plan if he wishes to rejoin Genesis at a future date.

****************************** Hidden Fees charged to my card without warning.
Trying to cancel due to moving and after 2 weeks of emails they tell me to go in to the club. The manager was rude and told me I would have to pay $200.00 to cancel. I did not sign a 12 month contract! I followed an AD to an online "Special". i am so frustrated. They charged my card an additional month. I just want out of this club. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS ****.

We're so sorry this member is frustrated with us. We have reviewed her account with our regional manager to ensure we have done our best to help her with her cancellation and with any other questions she may have had.

We have no hidden fees. Our complete contract terms are detailed in the online agreement she signed. We must assume she read the contract and knew what she was agreeing to. That said, we did extend her the special courtesy of lowering her early termination fee to $100 and waiving her 30-day cancellation notice. Her membership is scheduled to end on 10.31.22 with no further payments owed.

Again, our apologies for any confusion about her membership. We are happy to speak with her directly if she would like to call us.

Love the gym and the members but extremely disappointed with the General Manager Mike!! I brought a friend in to work out with me (who is a non-member). Once she did the sign in sheet and the manager came out. She was told that she had to pay the $15 day pass fee or leave a Google review. So then he proceeded to give her HIS personal cellphone and make HER log into HER personal Google account to leave the review. Thankfully, I realized what was going on and got it stopped before she verified all of her personal info and just paid the $15 for her! This is wrong on so many levels and could only imagine what could or would of happened of he had access to her whole Google Account!!

Overall a great gym with lots of surrounding like-minded people! I joined genesis around 4 months ago and even use the facilities when I am up at college. They have great machines and I am a big fan of the dark aesthetic of the gym.

Originally, I quite liked this gym and was happy with the personal Training I was receiving etc. One thing I didn't like is how pushy everyone was to buy personal training packages where you paid in advance for multiple sessions. Honestly, I'm not even sure that they had an option where you could pay as you went, which is suspect. In September of 2020 I got pregnant unexpectedly, I knew that I wanted to continue to use a personal trainer up until I was about 36 weeks so in around December I purchased enough personal training sessions to last me until then knowing that I was planning to move out of state after the baby was born. Unfortunately, in February 2021, at 23 weeks pregnant, I developed severe pre-eclampsia and had to be life flighted to a hospital over two hours away. My baby was delivered via c-section that same day. I was in the hospital for a week after the c-section with continued dangerously high blood pressure. My daughter was in the NICU and had to remain there for 4 months. I made the difficult decision to stay in the city with her. My blood pressure finally regulated after about 2 months, and my daughter was released in June 2021. We then moved out of state. I tried to contact Genesis multiple times regarding the leftover personal Training sessions, but their communication was terrible. It took over a year to finally receive a definitive response from the head of personal Training, which was a 2 line email that said the contract says no refunds. I understand I signed a contract, but I had some major life events happen, and both my health and the health of my daughter was seriously in doubt for a while. I feel like a blanket response of "we don't do that" is both immoral and unethical.

We appreciate this customer's review and apologize for any confusion about her training sessions. Although she has not been a member since 2021 our management team has tried to speak to her in the last 10 days with no success. We have also emailed to apologize and offer some solutions for her.

We strive to create an exceptional experience for every member and take it seriously when we fall short. We hope she will respond to our attempts to contact her. Again, our apologies.

I signed a month to month contract to genesis in liberty mo and was apparently signed up for a 6 month contract without my permission. They're not telling me they will "try their best" to talk to corporate to get me out of it but apparently will need to buy out of the contract I never signed up for otherwise. I'm incredibly frustrated because despite what everyone said about cancelling I still signed up and now I will have to deal with this. Never recommending this gym to anyone, incredibly frustrated right now.

We apologize for the confusion about the member's membership and cancellation request. We have waived the early termination fee and set the membership to cancel as of 9.1.22 per her 30-day notice.

Our team member who signed Daly up made an honest mistake in entering a 6-month contract. We are now working with this employee to get better. Meanwhile, we appreciate the feedback and have left a message for the member to contact us if we can do anything else for her.
