On September 11, 2024 I received a letter from Hardin Billing Service in Elizabethtown, Kentucky addressed to my father. The letter claimed that my father had a past due amount of $897.41 for solid waste services. However, the letter did not include an itemized account of this alleged amount. There was no contact information for Hardin Billing Services, no instructions for how to pay the bill, no reference to the property for which this collection service takes place, no dates of service, nothing.
Instead, the letter threatened to send this account and amount to collections, alleging that it was the second delinquent notice, despite this being the first letter received. The letter ended with "Immediate action is required on your part."
The lack of information made this appear to be a scam.
On Novemer 9, 2024 I received a second letter from Hardin Billing Service. The only change in the letter was a new paragraph that added an address, phone number, and website for this service.
Yet again, no other information was provided about the bill or the company. Its website reveals it to be a utility agency in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, that is suddenly collecting years-old unpaid bills.
My father has not lived in Kentucky since 2021 and has since died.
This service attempted to collect bills by threatening consumers without explanation in hopes people will pay outdated bills without question violates the FTC's "fake and abusive debt collectors" information. I have contacted the company to alert them to the death of the customer and to their illegal practices.
Judging by the other review here from September, the company must be auditing its delinquent accounts and sending out these inadequate letters in hopes of collecting years-old dues instead of proactively collecting them at time of service.
