We moved from Atlanta, GA to Lancaster, PA in March 2021 with Hometown Movers which was bought by Home and Office Movers. The price of the move changed dramatically from what was quoted by Gold Standard Relocation, the moving Broker. Our belongings were taken to a storage facility in MD and they began charging us an exorbitant fee of $700/month storage while we were trying to come to a fair agreement on pricing. The last time we were able to reach Home and Office Movers was in March 2022 and have since been unable to reach them or have any of our calls returned. We even sent them a certified demand letter and still got no response. Brian ***** with Channel 8 News did a news report interviewing us and reported this company as a moving scam. He did not receive return calls either when he attempted to contact them for their side of the story. At this point, we believe our items have been either sold without proper notice or stolen since they have been unreachable since March 2022 and have not responded to phone calls or a certified demand letter to make arrangements to have our belongings delivered to us.

I've done many moves including international. Do not hire this mover unless you're prepared to get taken advantage of, coerced, mislead, etc. They were hired, via a broker, to do our interstate move. The DAY OF moving (July 30th, 2022) we were told our bill would NOT be the broker's quoted price of approximately $16,000 but rather nearly $26,000! What choice did we have? None! This company was aware of that. Our landlord had terminated our lease effective the NEXT day. We were told by the broker, when we booked the move in May 2022, that our property would be stored at our destination. We had also provided both broker and this company a very accurate list of what we had including box sizes, numbers, etc. We were also told by the broker this company had long term storage at the destination and we could store our property for about $600/month. HomeOffice movers told us ON THE DAY OF THE MOVE they did NOT have long term storage and later the $600/month was suddenly going to be $1800+/month! Furthermore, we had boxed, taped, and labeled everything with the exception of things we couldn't box (bicycle, wheelbarrow, compressor, plants, etc.) prior to HomeOffice movers showing up on moving day. HomeOffice movers decided to retape, box, pack, etc and then charged us $4200+ to do so. We were told by the broker that was included in May's moving quote. HomeOffice movers also charged us again an 11% fuel surcharge when we had already paid the broker (who actually did none of the moving) the same 11% fuel charge! We have been double billed by broker and HomeOffice movers. I have sent multiple emails and made multiple calls to their office. I'm promised a response verbally, but they refuse to do so in writing. It's more dodge and evade. That in itself speaks volumes regarding their business practices. Also, be aware it appears there may be violations of federal, and probably state, law. The broker they work with is REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW to provide customers with a list of potential movers and contact information well in advance of the move. We received NO SUCH list. HomeOffice movers evade responsibility and justify their business practices by blaming the customer for the information the customer was NOT provided in accordance with federal law. The customer has NO opportunity to have a walk-thru well in advance of the move by a mover (again, something the customer is entitled to by LAW unless the customer waives that right - we did NOT WAIVE THAT RIGHT AND WERE DENIED THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXERCISE IT) contact other movers or do due diligence. This enabled HomeOffice movers to coerce us into doing as they wished on the day of the move saying that we should have contacted them much earlier. The HomeOffice mover supervisor running the crew said we had given them an accurate inventory prior, yet they decided our bill should be an additional $10,000 or so! Why weren't we told at that time rather than THE DAY OF THE MOVE? Oh, that's right, we might have had the time and opportunity to look for a different moving company. We were also told by office staff that this stuff happens all of the time! That speaks volumes as well. It sounds like our situation is not an exception. They blame the broker, the broker blames them and, in the end, the only one preyed upon is the customer. There are many reputable moving companies out there. I would not consider HomeOffice movers one of them. Stay away, far away.

      ***Document Attached***
Home and Office Movers never aims to have dissatisfied customer's. We were contracted to move Mr. ***** items by another company called nationwide. The services took place on 7/30/22 from Martinsburg, WV to Spokane, WA, the services for this move were as follows: 2389 cubic feet to be transported based on a list of 243 items with no packing services. This estimate was determined by Mr. ***** and his moving brokerage. The foreman provided the customer with a written revised estimate on site in advance of the move starting based on the services and space we predicted the customer actually needed. As the contractor we have no idea what life circumstances the customer are as we do not book the service with the customer, we are just there to preform them. At the conclusion of Mr. ***** move we had loaded 345 items ( 97 additional items ) we also needed to pack numerous miscellaneous that could not be loaded in the truck freely and unprotected then transported all the way to Washington state from the east cost. I have attached all the singed paperwork from our transport and the customer estimate with the brokage.

      Consumer Response /* (3000, 13, 2022/09/18) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Home and Office Movers clearly, plainly, and purposefully inflated the volume of our property in order to overcharge us. I have documented proof, pictures, that the volume of property ACTUALLY moved was far less than what they coerced us (refusing to load and unload) into paying at both pickup and delivery. I've included just a few of the many we have. Home and Office charged us for 3744 cubic feet of property including inflated fuel surcharges, etc. They actually picked up and transported far less than 3744 cubic feet of property. The fact is they picked up and transported approximately 2500 cubic feet of property. I have pictures attesting to the actual volume vs their inflated, fraudulent numbers. I have pictures proving Home and Office Movers unnecessarily retaped, etc. boxes which we had already packed, taped, and labeled prior to their arrival. They further inflated their packing material, labor charges by doing so. They pretend and claim to be an experienced, professional moving company so any excuse of "accidental" overcharging on volume is beyond belief, without basis, and lacks any veracity whatsoever. What's their excuse for not doing the REQUIRED PRE-MOVE SITE VISIT? They have none. We did not waive that right. This is done to deny the customer the time and opportunity to compare other moving companies. These are common scam practices perpetrated by moving companies in order to coerce, extort, and defraud customers. USDOT mentions fraudulent mover practices on their website as a legal, legitimate basis for complaint, enforcement, etc. against a carrier's USDOT license.
I've more pictures and videos should Home and Office Movers try to deny their fraudulent practices. I'm also willing to have my pictures verified at the storage unit where our property is being kept. I can also provide proof of the storage unit rental and its dimensions (12'x14'x40') beyond the included pictures.
The math is not difficult here, very basic. Length x Width x Height=Volume. They defrauded and extorted about $8271+ from us, via the billing rate of $5.99/cubic foot and fuel surcharges, by inflating the volume of property moved from the actual 2500 cubic feet approximately to 3744 cubic feet. They also used their inflated volume to falsely inflate the 11% fuel surcharge we were billed for and paid.

      Business Response /* (4000, 18, 2022/10/08) */
Mr. *****, Home and Office Movers did not deny you the right to compare your rates to other moving companies. In fact you did not even book your move with our moving company we were just the contract the moving company you hired and sent to actually move you. The wavier you signed denying the right to an in homes estimate was with the broker you used to find you a contractor. We actually had no contact with you at all prior to the day of your pick-up. However, we do think your move absolutely should have had an in home estimate done, if you would have hired us directly we would have provided that service for you. But you booked your move with a brokage. You also booked those services almost 2 months prior to your pick-up date in which you could have hired a different company to do an in-home estimate if your brokage was not willing to do one for you or send us out for the in home estiamte. Per your contracted agreement, our policies state delivery payments need to be made prior to off loading. This information is found in both your contract with us Home and Office Movers and the broker company that you contracted with. If your storage rental is 12'x14'x40' ( Length x Width x Height=Volume.) that means that unit holds 6,720 cubic feet. Meaning there would be more then enough room for 3744 cubic feet that we transported for you. we did not "accidental" over charged you. We charged you accurately based on the space and services your move needed. Home and Office Movers apologise that you are dissatisfied with your moving services.

      Consumer Response /* (4200, 20, 2022/10/17) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The only reasonable reponse that you made towards our complaint is that you should have done a site visit. Quit blame shifting Home and Office Movers is accountable for their part in the fraud that was perpetuated upon us. Who packed your trucks and made the false, inflated volume claim? It wasn't the broker. Prove to us where we waived the right for an in home estimate. We did not waive that right despite your claim to the contrary, you do not know the contract that we signed with the broker, unless you are privi to that private information.

The fact is that Home and Office Movers choose to bid contracts with brokers because they can overcharge the customers they get through a broker and make up fraudulent numbers when:
#1. The customers are being held hostage to your rates because of the situation that YOU and the broker have put them in. If you choose to do business with a broker and do not contact the customer for a walk through, YOU should have to aborbed the additional fees and stick with the estimate the broker gave rather than tell the customer they are SOL if they do not re-sign a new contract with you AND we were to sign BLANK forms. If not, you would walk away from the move (on the day the customer needed to move).
#2. The customer has no other choice but to be extorted under these circumstances.

Home and Office Movers certainly did not reach out to us to let us know that our job was accepted by them. Neither company let us know. This is a two-fold accountability. This is a violation of our rights.

Regarding your COMPLETE and utter misunderstanding of our storage unit. Yes, we did purchase a 12'x14'x40' (Length x Width x Height=Volume) storage unit that holds 6,720 cubic feet. Did you view our pictures? They irrefutably show MEASUREMENTS, DIMENSIONS, etc. of what you ACTUALLY PACKED AND PICKED UP. Maybe you should. Our items take a third of the unit. You have chosen to either ignore, deny, or lack the ability to review the documented, pictorial proof of the volume you actually packed. The proof provided very clearly depicts the actual dimensions of the volume you packed and is currently stored. The pictures provide irrefutable proof that a fraud has been perpetrated by your company. That is not the doing of the broker, it is on Home and Office Movers and ONLY on Home and Office Movers.

We offered to have our storage facility viewed for verification. What have you done to prove you actually shipped the volume you fraudulently claim?

You are not absolved of your legal requirements just because you do not want to be held responsible to comply with those federal requirements.

      Here are the facts:

The 53 foot trailer that transported our property had multiple loads in it including ours. We also have pictorial proof of the trailer. If home and office had factually packed and picked up the volume they fraudulent and falsely claim they did, there would have been less than 346 cubic feet of space used by the other load(s) on the very same 53 foot trailer. There was far more than 5 feet remaining in that trailer after our property was unloaded (ours was the first load taken off). Again, this irrefutably proves Home and Office Movers claim is without basis in fact. This too can easily be proven by the trailer's total manifest.

Home and Office did not provide the federally required, mandated weight documentation for our property. Again, this violation is the doing of Home and Office Movers not the broker

Home and Office Movers attempted blame of the broker to excuse their fraudulent business practices does not change the fact that Home and Office Movers violated federal DOT interstate law anymore than the broker attempting to blame Home and Office Movers for their violation of federal law. While the broker bears responsibility for their deceptive business practices, it is Home and Office Movers, not the broker, who by false pretenses inflated the volume of property packed and picked up. It was not the broker.

Home and Office Movers further perpetrated the fraud by unnecessarily repacking, taping, etc. property that we prepared well before their arrival.

Here are some more interesting facts:

You, Home and Office Movers, have multiple federal DOT complaints for similar deceptive, fraudulent activities.

Given the amount of this fraud, extortion, false pretenses, etc. we are considering civil and/or criminal legal action. Home and Office Movers excuses and evasion do nothing to void or invalidate the fact that Home and Office Movers engaged in those defined illegal activities.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Home and Office Movers bid and accepted our move from the broker, Nationwide Moving and Storage, very shortly after our booking.
Deflecting blame and responsibility for Home and Office Mover's knowingly theft bt deception changes nothing regarding their fraudulent business practices. It was Home and Office Movers, NO ONE ELSE,who falsely and fraudulently inflated THEIR BILL. IT WAS HOME AND OFFICE MOVER'S BILL. NO ONE ELSE EVEN HAD ACCESS TO THE BILL USED TO EXTORT US. Giving us the same lies, excuses, evasion, etc does NOT change the documented facts and pictorial proof of fraud we have provided. Home and Office Movers to using the excuse of not contacting us because they got our job without time to contact us in a timely manner is another lie. We know they bid and accepted our move many weeks in advance of our moving date. It was NO accident that they waited until just a few days before our move date to even contact us. THIS WAS DONE BY DESIGN BY HOME AND OFFICE MOVERS SO WE WOULD NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT TIME TO EVEN CONTACT OTHER MOVERS FOR A BID. THEY HAD FULL KNOWLEDGE OF OUR MOVING DATE AND KNEW IF THEY WAITED UNTIL WE HAD NO TIME LEFT THAT WE WOULD HAVE NO CHOICE. Blaming others for their fraudulent, deceptive, coercive business practices does not absolve them of responsibility regardless of how many times they repeat the same lies and frauds
