My car was repossessed on 6/15/25. The following day I called my lender and learned what I needed to do to regain possession of my vehicle. I was informed the car was being taken to the lot in ****, MI by the gentleman who took the car. Both times I spoke with my lender on 6/16 and 6/20, I was told my vehicle was in ****, **. On 6/20 I called Northstar to retrieve my car, they had moved my car to ***********, **, an hour and a half from my home, after I had caught the loan up- the lender even called Northstar, so they wouldnt move it. In addition, they removed my license plate, never told me and did not give it back or put it with my belongings, I had not cancelled the plate, as I knew I had 15 days to retrieve my car- despite them trying to send it to auction on day 5. I called to ask about my license plate on 6/22 and was told I would receive a call back asap, it is now 6/24 and I have heard nothing. In addition to the astronomical tow fees, I had to pay the storage fee of $150 for them to steal my license plate and not tell me, so we drove unknowingly without it- they also bagged all my belongings which was not true (many things still left in the car) and they moved my car AFTER my lender contacted them to tell them the release would be sent shortly. I had to spend extra gas to drive the hour and a half vs. the 30 minutes to where it had been, cancel my current plate, get a new one- all which cost time, money, and gas. The tow truck driver was very kind during the repossession, otherwise this process has been a nightmare.Business Response

We have four locations throughout Michigan. They are all inspected and insured. The unit was transported directly to our Schoolcraft Michigan location due to its size. The unit was never at our Holt, Michigan location. Personal property was bagged and tagged as required by state and federal laws. Financial institutions may have an auction pick up their unit at any time after the repossession process. This is out of our hands. As to the license plate, we remove them all from the vehicles before they are transported as they are considered personal property. The license plate can be picked up from our Schoolcraft Michigan location. Unless it is after the waiting period required by law. After that. The personal property would be destroyed. A replacement lost or stolen license plate costs five dollars on the state of Michigan website.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:I was told by the tow truck driver who repossessed the car it was being taken right up the road to HOLT, MI.
It was reportedly Northstar Recovery one TWO occasions that the car was located at the lot in HOLT, MI. Including the morning I paid to recover my car, where the loan representative called Northstar and VERIFIED it was in HOLT. I waited the hour requested (just over) to call and it was then in Schoolcraft.
I had to drive 152 miles to schoolscrsft to retrieve my car and get it home, opposed to the 58 miles round trip it would have taken had the car been in HOLT where the tow driver and the loan company BOTH said it was. I drove 94 extra miles.
Personal property is to be given back to the owner- It was not all bagged, including my license plate not being bagged. I asked the attended MULTIPLE times if I had everything to which she stated yes. That was untrue as I drove off the lot WITHOUT a license plate because all of my personal property was NOT given back to me as required. And now to get my license plate back that was required to be given to me and wasn’t you want me to drive another 152 miles to retrieve it- something that was your mistake? Not to them too I called on Monday and the lady I spoke with said she would find out where it was because it should have been given to me and call me back asap; it’s Friday and there has NEVER been a phone call.1 hour round trip - 58 miles to Holt ($10.92’total in gas)
2 hours 40 minutes round trip- 152 miles to Schoolcraft ONCE ($28.63 total in gas) now if I want my plate back because someone didn’t do their job, I have to do that again?
Without a second trip that’s an extra hour and 40 minutes of my time which is valuable and 94 extra miles I had to drive. That’s $17.71 extra in gas.
I can get a new plate, but that makes my car unable to be driven until I can get an appt then I have to wait (which takes MY time) and pay the money to get the plate. In addition to time and gas to drive the it nearest location that has an available appointment quickly so I can drive my car again. Not to mention because no one told me, we drove without a plate all the way home.
In addition, my car could not be auctions by law for another 10 days, but it sure has writing on it that will not come off with scrubbing, so I will need to purchase paint thinner to remove it without damaging my windshield. I have to purchase a new hands free phone holder, as it won’t restick.
The lies told to me and the loan company by Northstar Recovery are ridiculous. My mid-size SUV wouldn’t fit at holt? Really? But you reported it to the loan company that’s where it was multiple times and that’s where your driver was told me he was taking it to holt. i’m incredibly frustrated by this entire situation and have been shown zero quality customer service.
Do Better. Be Honest. Be Kind. Life happens and you have NO idea what someone is going through or or why their car was repossessed. No need for judgement.
Sincerely, cc

Northstar towed my truck, when I got my truck back from the second place that had it they provided pictures of when it came in and showed that my truck had been ransacked and multiple items had been stolen. I will be filling a police report with all of the serial numbers for them missing items. Also those tools were in a sealed case for a reason, asbestos. So whomever took my stuff if I get it all back I will back off on the police and just walk away, being whomever took it has been unknowingly punished, shouldn't steal other people's stuff, didn't think it was weird that there was a respirator in the truck?Business Response

we are a repossession company therefore we receive several false complaints. This repossession came over to us, and it was noted to use caution with **** the customer is extremely violent. We did not remove any personal property from this unit. It was sent to the auction with everything still inside of it. We also received a hold harmless letter from ***** in regards to the personal property. The sheriffs department followed up with us and said he was most likely making a false claim. Customer needs to contact the appropriate party in regards to personal property.

North Star Recovery, LLC, a vehicle repossession company, has continually trespassed on my property shoving business cards throughout demanding I call them. I have checked them out online and found they specializes in repossessing cars. I own my car outright, have never been in contact with this group, have no need for their services and have left evidence that their services are not wanted (i.e.: torn up business cards left by the front door). Regardless, their agent continues to trespass and harrass me - this morning he left MULTIPLE cards shoved into the front door, on top of the ring doorbell, on the floor mat..... and done before sun up (7:00 a.m. this time - once it was at 4:30 a.m.)This group is a nuisance and should not have an A+ rating by the BBB - especially with ZERO reviews. This seeks to give other consumers a FAIR report on this group and have their rating dropped to "F".Consumers like me rely on the BBB for truthful, honest, FACTUAL information about busiensses. North Star Recovery, LLC in ****, ** is not deserving of a good rating. They harrass and stalk people for services not needed nor warranted and refuse to cease and desist.Attached file shows 2/3 cards stuffed into crevices on my property this morning. They have left 14 in 11 months since I moved into my home.Business Response

We were not trespassing on the property. We had a driver leave a couple business cards. We only went to his property one time. We notified him that we would not return to his property. We also spoke with a police officer who went to the property and tried to explain the situation to the consumer. We have not heard anything further as far as a complaint.
