Shelter is a scam! Takes customers money with no intention of putting customers a priority! Theyll accuse you of fraud and deny your claim if you file one and then drop you! Customer service is one of the worse! Do NOT use this company! Vehicle was stolen and had every coverage possible but was met with rude and degrading adjuster then referred to as a fraud for the claim!

I read the complaint filed by ***********************. On January 1, ****, ****************** vehicle was stolen. At the time of the loss, the Auto policy was active. When claims occur, it is standard in the insurance industry, to complete the investigation prior to settling the loss. This includes the completion of the required Proof of Loss forms. As the titled owner of the vehicle, it is reasonable for our adjuster to request **************** to complete the form, sign and return. Once the form is received, we can proceed with the investigation. Our intentions are to complete the investigation to ensure the claim is settled correctly and in a timely manner. I apologize on behalf of our adjuster for any comments **************** deemed rude and/or unprofessional. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

Went through two interviews only to be denied an opportunity based on my credit report which has several errors. No reasoning, just a forwarding of a credit report. They say they value integrity but apparently have none themselves.

I read ************************ comments regarding the claim that occurred on August 21, 2022. Shelter Insurance also responded to the complaint ********************** filed with the ******** Department of Insurance. The insureds hardwood flooring was damaged by water from a hot water heater. ********************** hired a mitigation company to complete the remediation process. She signed a contract on August 26, 2022 for the company to complete the work. ********************** was paid $5,689.02 for the water mitigation. The check was issued on September 19, 2022 payable to ********************** and her mortgage company. ********************** cashed the check on November 8, 2022.On August 16, 2023, ********************** called the claim supervisor. She was upset that Shelter had not paid the mitigation company. Ms. ********* stated she was told Shelter would pay the water mitigation directly. The claim process was explained. The insured used the proceeds paid for the mitigation to pay her mortgage. Now, she wants Shelter to pay the mitigation company. The claim payment was sent to ********************** to pay for the water mitigation work completed. Shelter paid ************************ for the damage caused by the loss. The claim payment was not meant to pay her mortgage. Shelter paid the claim in accordance with the policy. No further payments will be issued.

I read the complaint filed by Rhonda Peaks. On November 6, 2023, the Branch Manager called Ms. Peaks to discuss the claim. Ms. Peak stated there are numerous areas in the kitchen that need repaired. Ms. Peaks explained she requested another inspection but Shelter would not agree to send anyone back to her home. The Branch Manager advised he would discuss with the supervisor and ask our adjuster to schedule a reinspection with her contractor to look at the interior damage. Ms. Peak agreed with decision to have our adjuster reinspect the interior ceiling damage with her contractor present. Ms. Peak should contact the adjuster if she had additional questions. Thank you.

Title paperwork is needed from ******************** prior to issuing payment for the balance to her. She shared that she has had trouble with the Copart website and ******************* gave her the phone number to call for support and the option to physically drop off the paperwork at the local Copart office. As soon as Copart has the necessary paperwork from her, we will issue payment.

Mr. ****** home sustained damage during a June 14, 2023 storm. An adjuster inspected the home and noted the roof damage was tarped, so contacted ************** to request photos of the damage beneath the tarp. To date, the requested photos have not been received. ************** called on July ************************************************************************** roof damage. Claims Supervisor ********************* called ************** to schedule a reinspection, but his voice mailbox was full and not accepting messages. She will continue to try to get in touch with him. Please note a contractor or someone else who is willing to remove and reattach the tarp should be present at the reinspection. Shelter Insurance has collect payment from me for 10 years, never made a single claim, now when I need them they dont call me back, dont email, and when I finally do get someone to answer, they give me the run around. Last I was told that they used a 3rd party adjuster, and that my claim is now out of their hands. Both parties tell me this. Complete joke of a company that only collects payments.

Dear BBB,I am writing in response to the complaint filed by ****************** regarding his claim experience. Foremost, we apologize for any service that did not meet his expectations. We understand that timely service is crucial, especially when dealing with a high volume of claims, as was the case due to recent storms affecting numerous policyholders. To expedite the claim assessment process and reduce delays, we employ the assistance of independent adjusters. These professionals receive training from Shelter to emulate our internal processes and adhere to our standards of quality and efficiency. Further, it is our business practice for a Shelter employee to review every claim handled by an independent adjuster. Upon receiving ********************** claim on July 3, we engaged an independent adjuster, who inspected his home on July 9. This approach allows us to serve many customers efficiently, as the workload is distributed among trained professionals who can promptly assess damages. On July 14, we received the comprehensive report from the independent adjuster and promptly approved ********************** claim for payment, which was paid via our FastPay option on July 17, 2023. We value our customers and are dedicated to delivering exceptional service. Our commitment to clear communication and efficient service remains unwavering. Thank you for the opportunity to review and respond.

Absolutely appalled by the service I have received from adjuster ******************************* in *********** **. I have 40+ home policies with Shelter and will be looking else where for insurance. My one and only claim after a tenant house fire has been a NIGHTMARE! There have been zero time bound expectations and no return calls regarding my claim. I have requested his supervisor call me back on several occasions and have never been called by a supervisor. My agent (who I love) even emailed ******* and his supervisor requesting a call back. No response. I have now resorted to calling the ***** number. The numbers that my adjuster used for replacement cost after a tenant house fire are COMPLETELY outdated and do not reflect ANY current bid I have provided. Their cost estimator is from the software of 2015 and doesnt leave any room for the increase of materials today in 2023 I am so disappointed as I have loved shelter up until this claim and experience.

I read the complaint filed by ***************************. On March 16, 2023, the insureds tenant occupied dwelling was damaged by a kitchen fire. In addition to filing the complaint with the BBB, the insured called our *************************** today, April 14, 2023 requesting a call. The message was forwarded and the Branch Manager called ******************** immediately to discuss the claim. They discussed the estimating platform Shelter uses to determine the damage. The manager advised ******************** that the supervisor would call shortly to discuss all the specific items related to the loss. The supervisor called ******************** to review the loss. The insured should direct all questions regarding the loss to the claims department. I apologize on behalf of Shelter Insurance for any delays in the claim handling ******************** deemed unacceptable. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

I have had a Shelter Insurance policy for 17 years. A pipe burst in my kitchen during the cold snap we had and their adjusters are blatantly ignoring the footage I provided of water flooding my kitchen, the statement of my plumber and the work I paid to stop the flooding, and are instead focusing on the age of the wood under my house (it was built in the 60s)where there seems to have been a slow leak at some point (that was not visible at all unless you go into the crawl space and has since been fixed.)
They shouldn't be covering older homes if they don't want to abide by the coverage in the policies they are issuing.

I read ********************** comments and reviewed the file. The insured reported a water pipe broke on January 27, 2023. Our investigation determined the water supply lines running to the kitchen sink were leaking. During our inspection, our adjuster discovered deterioration, mold, and mildew to the kitchen cabinets, kitchen subfloor, and kitchen floor framing. We contacted the insured's plumber who had repaired the water supply lines. The plumber advised the leak was from a pin hole in the pipe and water leakage had occurred for some time. The Homeowners Insurance Policy specifically excludes coverage for losses caused by mold, mildew, and continuous or repeated leakage of water over a period of 14 days or more. Based on our investigation and policy language, the claim was denied. Upon receipt of additional information, a reinspection was completed which confirmed our original discovery. ****** has decided to hire an engineer to assist with our investigation. If ****************** has any questions regarding the claim, she should contact our adjuster. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

I bought my first home (Dec 2002) and insurance with Shelters. I was so happy that I have a roof over have head now. There was water leaks to the roof and I called a roofer, who inspected the roof and advised me that there was enough wind damage in the roof and advised to file a claim with my insurance company to have it repaired. They put two small tarps in the roof which they thought will prevent further leaks. Shelter sent ******* ********** and processed my claim and paid just $686.53 for roof plan and reaming amount to to fix the interior. They said there re only 12 missing singles, and paid to repaid 1 roofing square. Their inspector, took of the tarps to check the roof under it and did not put it back correctly. There was water leaks again in 2-3 days I got more damage in the interior of the house. I reported it to roofer, and this time they put a bigger tarp in other area as they thought this source was leaks is different than where they tarp initially.
Adjuster never came, and relied on Hancock. Adjuster did not think over the source of water leaks and paid to fix all those damages than only for 12 missing singles. The amount paid to me for roof repair ($654) was too less compared to what I am due to pay roofer ($2650 + taxes). The worst part of the story is that a leaking roof and all the unsuccessful negotiation caused me an immense amount of stress, which has had a significant impact on my health and I am now on thyroid treatment. I expect your company to take measures to ensure that other customers are not subjected to the same treatment that I have experienced.

I read ***************************** comments and reviewed the claim. **************** filed a claim for storm damage on November 2, 2022. Shelter hired ********************************* to inspect the damage. During their inspection, the contractor discovered twelve shingles were damaged by wind. The contractor also identified numerous areas of unsealed shingles caused from improper installation, and not consistent with storm damage. In addition, the contractor discovered minor water damage on the ceilings of three rooms inside the dwelling. Based on the inspection, our adjuster wrote an estimate for the storm-related damage. The total estimated cost to repair was $2,839.63. At the time of loss, the insureds policy had a $2,500.00 deductible. We understand **************** is dissatisfied with our payment; however, our position remains unchanged. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.

I am surprised that why did you keep taking the insurance premium if the roof has improper installation? This is original roof from the time house was built 16 years ago. This whole sub division was built by the same builder do that mean everyone wont get the claim for this reason? The damage reported by the third party was underestimated and this is the reason changed my insurance to another company now. Roofer had to replace about 607 roofing square roof in in the back side as the tarp that was put to prevent the water leak damaged the roof. If you cannot send your own roofer then the insurance should pay for that to get fixed. Not only me, my two colleagues have also cancelled the insurance with Shelter and moved to a different insurance company after I told them that they have a ghost adjuster who cant come and see the damage. Third party contractor work for companies and therefore don't report more damage.. that is why they get more insurance companies as clients. Adjusted could have seen it over a video call even if I was not satisfies with claim, but he didn't. I am trying my best to let each and every staff of my workplace know about it so that the others leave Shelter too.
