my husband and i bought a homeowner's policy from shelter, agent in West Frankfort Illinois. we were given a premium and paid in full for a year 12/15/22 over 2100 dollars, on 1/21/23 we received a supplemental bill for 718.00 I reached out to the agent in a panic and was messaged back the same day stating it's a billing error and we paid for a year in full and she would call me Monday. This never happened I had to reach out to her on Wednesday to hear oh I'm sorry, I quoted you incorrectly and you do owe that money unless you want to add your cars, I quoted you the discounted price. I said absolutely NOT we never asked for a car insurance quote and how dare you not honor your premium that we paid in full by YOUR words and ask for more of our business. I would never recommend ******* ****** Shelter insurance. I reached out to her district supervisor as well and she was not much help actually stating oh I know you are upset I can hear your husband in the background completely downplaying this. I said you have no idea how upset we are, and ******* should be held accountable for her error, no resolve, so we will be cancelling our policy as soon as possible. Disappointed is an understatement. I'm sorry doesn't make up for a 718.00 mistake. We will make this right and honor our word is the appropriate thing to doShelter Insurance Corp Office

I read the complaint filed by *************************. Our agent quoted a Homeowner policy with premiums that included a companion policy discount if the auto policy was written and a quote without the auto. A few days after receiving the quotes, ******************** stated he wanted to purchase the Homeowner policy without insuring the autos. The application was written and submitted (in error) using the quote with the companion policy discount which indicated we had the supporting autos. Our underwriting department reviewed the application and determined we did not insure the autos, so a supplemental bill for the correct premium was mailed. As ******************** mentioned, she discussed this issue with the agent and sales district leader. Shelter Insurances rates are filed with the ******** Department of Insurance. The companion policy discount is given to those who insure both the home and auto policies. It is an insureds decision whether to also insure the autos or only the home. If they do not insure both policies, we are unable to give the discount. Our rates are filed with the state, so we cannot give the discount without the supporting business to some and not all insureds. I am sorry my response is not more favorable.Review fromKangjkim

Im having a hard time get paid out from Shelter Insurance. My vehicle was parked legally on the street and a vehicle rear ended my vehicle. Its clearly the insurers fault. Id like something to be done on this. They have rented a vehicle for me for only 4 days, even though I havent got paid from them yet.Shelter Insurance Corp Office

I read ************* comments and reviewed the file. The accident occurred on December 15, 2022. Shelter approved a rental vehicle for ********** until December 22, 2022. On December 19, 2022, Shelter extended a settlement offer. ********** should submit a photo of the front and back of the vehicles title to our adjuster, as payment can only be made to the titled owner. Upon receipt, our adjuster will review and handle, accordingly. ********** should contact our adjuster if he has any questions regarding the claim. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.Review fromLeslie R

1 starThey are refusing to pay for auto damages in which one of the customers vehicles were involved. Their customer was involved in an auto accident and walked away from the vehicle. The police was called to investigate the accident. They are trying not to take responsibility for the accident.Review fromKam B

If I could give no stars I would. I have been dealing with them on a claim that is 4 years old! The adjuster was rude and sexist to my mother. My father died in 2014 and he would address things to him not my mother who was clearly the insured on the house. My mom got so upset with his mistreatment and lack of communication that I had to take over the handling of the claim because of her blood pressure. The real kicker is she has asthma and from the water damage to her basement there was an area we had tested because it was mold, by a ceritified company that deals in mold mitigation. He had a structural engineer come in and told my mom it was grease! WTH does a structural engineer know about mold! They dont obviously because he wouldnt pay for the mitigation and then she had a different claim and part of it damaged the original claim area and they found the mold had grown from a one foot section to cover a 14 foot wall! I mean it literally destroyed the bar area. So instead of replacing one cabinet it was now the whole bar, drywall, countertops, cabinets and ceiling. Did I mention my mom has asthma?! guess what happens to asthmatic people when they are continuously around mold. The adjuster was negligent and he still hasn't replied or completely paid the claim. There is still about $5000 owed for a new countertop and mold mitigation. I have emailed and sent invoices and copied the contractor, the contractor has emailed. I have also called and he always seems to be out of the office. Anytime I see their commercial about customer service I scoff and almost want to puke because it is so far from the experience we have had! I would never, ever recommend Shelter to anyone not even my worst enemy at this point. Claim ******* and *********************** is the adjuster. So if you are a Shelter customer and you get him ask for a different one is all I can say.Shelter Insurance Corp Office

I read ****************** comments regarding the handling of her mom, ****************** April 18, 2018 water claim from a refrigerator line leaking behind the refrigerator. We have paid $47,060.32 under the ***5 policy. As ****************** father, *** ******* was still listed on the policy on the loss date, our computer system generated his name on a May 9, ************************************************************** ******* as on other correspondence. I apologize on behalf of *********************** for any behavior deemed rude or uncommunicative as well as any concerns raised by the addressee oversight. As mentioned by ***************** *********************** Incorporated (ESI) completed an independent inspection based on Ms. ******* concerns. *********************** also inspected on multiple occasions and worked directly with the contractor. Ms. ****** opted to pay for all new oak cabinets versus replacing only damaged panels and staining to match. The invoice to replace the kitchen cabinets specifically noted staining to match the other cabinets. Further, Ms. ****** upgraded her pantry and widened the refrigerator space, which were unrelated to the loss. Mold was found behind the cabinets once repairs began and the estimate includes mold remediation as well as remove and reset of the countertops. ****************** concerns were shared with ****************** who will follow up directly with *********************** to confirm communication with the contractor, including additional loss-related remediation. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.Review fromHolly R

We got Shelter Insurance when we bought our house in 2017. Haven't really had any situations where we needed much until yesterday. We have homeowners, car and road side assistance. Our Yukon broke down in the parking lot of Best Buy yesterday and wouldn't start. We were hoping it was just a dead battery. We called Shelter's road side assistance number and got an AUTOMATED system. No option to speak to anyone. The only option was JUMPT STARTS. The automated system prompted us to provide a phone number to TEXT and all communications afterwards were TEXT ONLY. Our wait time for someone to show up was changed twice and we waited over an hour and a half for a guy to show ** in a beat up mid sized suv who informed us that our insurance company ONLY COVERED JUMP STARTS. What kind of insurance company offers road side assistance that only covers jumps starts?! No fuel delivery? No battery replacement or towing?! The guy said if we needed a battery replacement, which we ended up needing, it was an additional $120. He had another jump start he had to go to after removing our battery and needed to go do before taking my husband to the nearest auto parts store to buy a replacement. So not only does my cheap insurance company only cover jump starts, they hire independent contractors and pay them **** money so they have to charge extra for additional services they don't cover AND only uses an automated system during your time of crisis being stuck out on the road. Thank gawd we were not stranded on the highway during this whole thing with our 4 year old! We are shopping for different insurance immediately. Your time of crisis shouldn't be when the insurance company FAILS. I should have read the fine print when we got it!Shelter Insurance Corp Office

I read the complaint filed by ***********************. I apologize on behalf of Shelter Insurance for whatever inconveniences the insured experienced. Our Emergency Roadside Program covers towing, jump starting, lockout service, fuel delivery and tire changing if a spare is on site. Our customers can speak with a live representative by selecting 0 or ignoring/declining the prompt asking for permission to send a text which will transfer the call to a live agent. A review of the ********************** (***) request indicated the insured called for a jump start. The provider dispatched handles minor roadside events such as battery jumps, tire changes and door unlocks. The provider was unable to jumpstart the vehicle or perform the tow. At that point, the provider should have advised **************** to call roadside back to set up a tow. Regarding the battery sold, this would have been an arrangement between the insured and the provider directly. The *** coverage does not provide batteries or equipment.Shelter Insurance has spoken to the independent contractor that handles our *** and they will ensure the provider/drivers are properly trained on the process when such events occur. We understand the insureds frustration and are sorry they experienced inadequate service. Shelter appreciates the opportunity to review these matters to ensure they do not occur in the future.
