Meridian waste transferred my trash service to another company due to not having drivers to collect on the schedule time. Was informed I would receive a refund of the money paid for remaining time in the quarter left due to the cancellation of their services. The refund was supposed to be mailed out 08/01/2022. When I call to ask about not receiving around 08/19/2022 I was informed that they would now be mailed out on 09/01/2022 due other customers having issue with the changing of service. I called 09/22/2022 about not receiving the refund yet and was told that it would be mailed out but 09/30/2022. On 10/13/2022 I called about not receiving the refund and was informed it was mail out to North Carolina to be processed and then mailed out to myself.Business Response

I called to cancel my waste service for my business at both of my locations. The employee who I left a message for emailed me back a statement stating I was under contact for 5 years. she also emailed me a very blurry copy of the said contract. the only thing that's legible on the contract i the monthly amount of $53.00 The reason for me cancelling service is because my monthly bill has increased to $143. she stated to me the have a right to go up to any price they want to and I must stay in contract no matter how how it goes and I don't have a choice. The language on the contract is ambiguous and not entirely forthcoming, when you sign, you're expecting to be in contact for $53 for the term. She wouldn't allow me to talk to anyone else and was extremally rude.Business Response

I was a Meridian customer for several years, receiving weekly trash & recycling pick-up on Thursdays and Fridays, respectively. During the pandemic, from early 2020 through the beginning of 2022, trash pick-up was often rescheduled for Friday or Saturday, and recycling was often postponed until Friday of the next week. Meridian blamed the problem on a worker shortage.
However, in March/April 2022, my trash and recycling services were interrupted on a weekly basis, with service delays lasting not just a few days, but now two weeks or more! I called Meridian to find out why their service was going from bad to worse, rather than getting better as the pandemic eased. The rep stated that they had recently hired more workers and improved service would be provided shortly.
That was not the case. During the last week of April 2022, I did not receive trash or recycling service at all! Service was rescheduled for the first week of May, but Meridian did not show up that week either! By that point, I had accumulated two weeks' worth of trash and recycling on my property, with no guarantee that collection would happen the following (3rd) week.
I'd had enough, so on May 6th, I called Meridian to cancel the service. I told the rep that I had recently paid $101.94 for trash/recycling/yard waste pick-up from 5/1/22 through 7/31/22, but since Meridian had not provided any services for the past few weeks, I wanted a full refund. The rep switched me to the billing department to discuss this. No one answered, so I left a message.
Meridian did not return my call, so I called a week later and was told that Meridian doesn't issue refunds for canceled services mid-cycle. I explained that I only canceled because Meridian repeatedly failed to provide the weekly collection that I had paid for, so in effect, I was giving them free money -- paying them for a job that they didn't do. They offered me a credit for missed service. Forget credit. I want a refund.Business Response

Due to the current truck
driver shortage across the U.S., Meridian Waste was experiencing service delays
in most cases by one or two days but still serviced within the same week.
Driver schedules were extended from a standard 5-day work week to a 6-day work
week to compensate for the resource level. Meridian made every effort to recruit qualified CDL drivers.
Credits are provided toward
future services when a route is cancelled due to the driver shortage but not
offered in cases where services were delayed by a day or two as the customers
are still serviced within the same week.
Since *** ******* cancelled
service on June 3rd and not May 6th as he indicated, he
was unable to utilize the credit for future services. Meridian was willing to services through the
end of the paid period.
All invoices include a
disclaimer that “Any residential subscription service cancellation requested
mid-cycle will not receive a prorated refund” appears on the invoice that Mr.
******* provided.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:Meridian has claimed to be short of drivers for two years now, ever since the start of the pandemic in 2020. And throughout that time, my weekly trash collection service was regularly delayed by at least a couple of days. Recycling and yard waste collection were often skipped completely, rather than delayed for just a few days. For two years, I was extremely understanding of Meridian's stated difficulty in hiring and training qualified drivers. My patience, however, was pushed to the limit beginning in March/April of 2022, when what had become a regular two/three day delay (sometimes even a week!) was extended to more than a week. I finally had enough and canceled my service when the infamous Meridian robocall informed me that my trash pick-up, which had already been delayed the previous week, would also be delayed for a second week! Fortunately, a neighbor generously allowed me to put my trash with theirs, and it was picked up by ******* ********, a most honest and reliable trash collection service (see their A+ BBB rating!) that has somehow managed to deliver weekly service on time throughout the pandemic! The simple truth is that Meridian failed time and again since 2020 to do the job I paid it to do: collect my trash on a weekly basis. As a longtime Meridian customer, each time I received an invoice for service from Meridian, I paid it on time. Yet, somehow, Meridian hardly ever/never provided me with the timely service that I deserved in return for my timely payment. Meridian's offer of a "credit" for future services is a wholly unacceptable remedy for their poor service, since such a credit would not guarantee that the weekly trash pick-up I was contracted to receive would actually be rendered the next week, or the next whenever.Meridian's one-star BBB rating is no lie; they've earned every complaint by not delivering services. My complaint against Meridian is shared by hundreds, if not thousands,
of dissatisfied customers who did not receive the trash collection
service they paid for. I'm only sorry that I dragged my feet in dumping Meridian I was trying to "work with Meridian" and understand their "driver
shortage situation." Unfortunately, Meridian has showed me zero understanding for the difficulties that their lack of service imposed upon me, with trash piling up in my dumpsters for weeks at a time. Meridian's refusal to prorate refunds for services which the company did not render is nothing less than outright theft. And thieves have zero interest in being accredited by the Better Business Bureau. I would say, "Shame on Meridian," but this money-grubbing trash company stopped collecting shame a long time ago.
Sincerely,
****** *******Initial Complaint

So in April they discontinued my service over 15 dollars...they had raised my rates (again) and I didn't realize it...my new bill was almost due so I was going to pay at the same time...but then they suspended me...even though they had canceled service 4 times the last bill cycle with no credit...this came at the end of 3 years of horrible service...so I called back to cancel service and 2 of these forms I submitted are proof of when I started my new provider...their reasons to continue credit collection on us are these...they said I could not cancel the service my husband had to...I was not informed of this when I asked them to...I would have had him call if they had told me that...their second reason is it's not written on my account that I asked to cancel...I was also at the same time dealing with an issue with them for our church...and was told that the lady I finally got on the phone could both cancel my service and transfer me to the commercial department...she did transfer my call, but did not cancel...and they keep saying that that call was entirely for the commercial account...I am willing to pay them the 15 dollars I owe them and have stated that repeatedly...but not until they drop off the portion of the bill I do not owe... when I first received the bill I thought maybe they just didn't get the paperwork done in time...then I started getting phone calls...I tried calling corporate but they just transfer me back to the local office...and today I finally talked to a manager and she tells me because my husband didn't call I have to pay it...I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS... also just an fyi...we never signed a contract with them...our waste management service was sold to them...we never recieved anything stating that it was a contract...then they have since sold to yet another company that dropped all my neighbors after they paid the next 3 months of service... I want this pulled out of collections, that is the 3rd document...the collection agency they sent it to.Business Response

My name is *** ******* ******. I was serviced by your company until 2019. At that time your company was replaced by ******* ******** to service my area. When being serviced by your company, one of my trashcans was misplaced by your truck workers which resulted in your company proving me with a new trashcan. This trashcan has caused no issues until today, when ******* refused to take my trash, stating the trashcan you all provided me with actually is a recycling can and not a regular one. After speaking with ******* they stated I need to follow up with you all to get the can replaced.
I spoke with *****, Meridian Waste, customer service manager today. She was very rude, abrasive, confrontational, and aggressive while on the phone with me. I asked how I could make a formal complaint and she hung up on me. I am asking that the call is reviewed as I am very concerned that if this behavior is acceptable of your customer service manager, that the level of service your other customers may be provided by lower lever customer service representatives is worse.
To resolve this issue I am asking for a new trashcan or the amount equivalent amount in money to purchase one of my own ($132).Business Response

This company bought a company that we used to do business with, and they say we owed money to that company. We do not owe them any money, and they won't provide us with any kind of proof that we owe this money. In fact, considering how seldom they picked up our trash, which is why we changed companies in the first place, they should be refunding some of our money.Business Response

We purchased a company that this person used. This person was marked as a collection account when the accounts were transferred over.
This person/persons was never told they owe us money. To set up an account with us, this customer is required to pay a deposit, a start up fee, and a cart delivery fee if they choose to get a cart. We are not the only utility company that ask for a deposit.
We do not know how much they went to collection for at the other company. That really isn’t any of our business.
Thank You,

We have been having issues with Meridian services for the past 6 months with trash service not being collected. I recently paid our quarterly bill for the upcoming quarter (July-September) and for the first two weeks in July our trash was not collected. I decided to switch to a different company and called Meridian to let them know. In that same time frame, Meridian sent an email informing that they were selling our account to a different trash provider. I had asked Meridian for a refund of the bill I had recently paid and was informed no refund would be given since it was in the middle of a cycle. This is extremely frustrating given all of the issues we have had with this company and that no services will be needed since they missed the first two weeks of the new quarter and I had already cancelled my services. I have called a few times in addition to emailing the customer care email only to be given very vague responses. I could understand if this was in the middle of a cycle and services had been used but this is not the case.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:The reason I cancelled my service was because of not receiving services at all from Meridian. The first two weeks of the cycle were missed with no alternative solution to picking up the trash other than waiting the following week to which the trash can was extremely overflowing. This is not the first time this has happened, this has been a very frequent occurrence and yet Meridian never would credit our account unless the customer reached out. I completely could understand if I had up and cancelled for no specific reason but the reason being is the services were not being performed by Meridian which is not my fault. I understand your policy if services were being performed by Meridian but in this case they were not hence why I cancelled my trash service as I need to have my trash picked up weekly and expect to do so given I’m paying for a weekly trash pickup.

I had residential waste collection service with Meridian Waste. Service was to pickup trash and recycling separately once a week each. Service is paid for up front, before the service period begins. For the service period of April 1, 2022 - June 30, 2022, I paid the amount of $108.34 on March 21, 2022. During this period, there should have been 13 trash collections and 13 recycle collections. Instead, I only received 3 trash collections and 2 recycle collections. Meridian claims that it missed pickups due to "national truck driver shortage". I do not accept this explanation because of the sheer number of missed pickups (21 of 26 total pickups were missed, over 80%). In the past, when they could not make a pickup, they would reschedule for another day the same week and would usually make that rescheduled pickup successfully. That did not happen during this period once. I contacted Meridian on July 29, 2022 requesting a partial refund for the missed pickups but Meridian refused. Meridian said on the phone that they missed one week of pickups in April, three in May, and three in June. So they admit to missing over half of their pickups, however they still offered no attempt at remediation. Furthermore, they actually missed an additional 3 trash and 4 recycle pickups that they didn't have recorded. Typically, Meridian would send a robo-call a day before missing a pickup, but in at least 5 cases, this call did not come, and when I inquired why a pickup was missed, I was told that the driver "forgot to go down my street". Meridian has made no attempt to make due for undelivered service, as they had in the past. As such, I consider Meridian to be guilty of defrauding me, by collecting my payment, failing to deliver service, and offering no attempt at remediation. I have since cancelled my account with Meridian and began service with another provider, who have not missed a single pickup so far. I ask for help to at least partially retrieve my $108.34 payment.Business Response

I have had several issues with Meridian Waste not picking up the trash at our place of business, but in June it worsened. In the past Meridian would send a truck out when the route was overlooked, but in June Meridian unapologetically postponed trash pick up without informing us. I cancelled my service after paying for the month of July. In July our trash was picked up once for the whole month. I paid both months in full and did not receive the service that was paid for. After several phone calls and the usual run around with customer service I decided to file a complaint. Meridian Waste in essence is stealing from their customers by charging them a full price for services that never get rendered.Business Response
