I had in my calendar that my KC Star subscription was up on 6/28/2025. On 6/23/2025 I submitted my cancellation and received an email confirmation. Later, In reviewing my monthly Visa bill, I found the full subscription amount was taken on 6/22/2025.
I did a chat today to explain my issue, and ask for a refund. Was told I should have read the terms of service. I needed to give 30 days notice, and they have the right to keep my $189.99. I asked that since they won't refund, can I have access again? Was told I cancelled and that I am out my money.
I am very disappointed there is no consideration considering I acted in good faith. Why would anyone "donate" $189.99 to The Star? I paid a larger rate than I would have ever agreed to and received nothing in return.
I believe in the past The Star has investigated other companies and organizations for taking money from consumers and not providing services. I hope either The Star changes their policy or this helps others from getting money taken from them. Very disappointed!

Thank you for contacting the Kansas City Star. We do provide a Terms of Service on all subscriptions which indicates we do not refund. However, we have reviewed this for Mr. ********* and we will refund the last payment of $189.99 back to his credit card that was charged this amount. Thank you, Kansas City Star.

On 9/18/23, the Kansas City Star automatically billed me $99.99 for a subscription I didn't even know I had. On that same day I emailed them my cancellation request for which I received a confirmation. After 3 more requests, the last threatening legal action, I received notice of my refund on 1/11/24, in the amount of $77.40. They delayed paying me my refund for almost 4 months until I threatened to sue and then charged me for having their subscription during that time! I can't wait until this worthless rag is finally bankrupt and gone.

I keep getting fraudulent billing for overdue payment when my digital subscription doesn’t expire until 12/31/23. They locked me out of my account on November 15th, 2023. Attempts to resolve this on the phone have been unsuccessful. I went ahead and paid for a new subscription even though mine is still good til 12/33/23 and they are sending me bills with threats to send to collection. My repeated experience is that they negotiate rates but they do not honor the length of the subscription as agreed upon. Econ when I send in documentation.

Thank you for your message to the Kansas City Star. Our records show an account that expired 10/15/23. Since subscriptions do not stop automatically, the account continued until 11/14/23. We do not see the new account with this email address. Did you subscribe with the same email?

Please note, as of today ,11/27, the account has been cleared and there should not be any further notifications or calls regarding a balance.

Please feel free to contact us at 877-962--7827 or [email protected] if you have any further questions or concerns.

Signed up for one month digital service. Cancelled subscription on their web site on August 6, 2023. Subscription ran thru August 11. Realized on August 11 I was still receiving the paper. They had billed me for another month and I found out they had set me up for auto pay without my knowledge or consent. When I called to report the error I was told they do not ***** "refunds." I mentioned this was not a refund but a mistake in billing on their part. Was told "refund" would be forthcoming but I am still receiving the paper. I will never subscribe to this paper again and will tell anyone remotely interested to think again about doing business with the Kansas City Star newspaper. No refund as of August 15th.

This paper has fraudulent billing practices and are experts at making worthless excuses for the bills they issue. They do not ***** their own invoice terms, their process is to cancel Subscribers after half the time paid for , then invoice subscriber even more for what they call auto renewal, they are knowingly scamming their subscribers and so far seem to get away with it. If you agree to any kind of subscription with them you will be subject to their fraudulent billing scam as well.

Is there any way to get the Kansas City Star to stop debiting my bank account for a newspaper I cancelled Nov. 2021? I have an email of confirmation to prove it was cancelled. Upon talking to them, they continue to say I can't cancel until the end of the period. I have not received a paper in over a year, I am on a fixed income and I cannot deal with their continuous debiting my account for different amounts, anywhere from $17.00, $73.00 to $169! These fraudulent and unauthorized deductions are stressing me out as they won't stop nor will they reverse these debits. How can this company be stopped from senior citizen abuses?

The KC Star billing **** has repeatedly sent me inaccurate invoices. On Mar 07, 2022 I renewed my online account for one year and paid in full. On Jan 19, 2023 I called and cancelled my online account after receiving a renewal statement via regular mail. One week later I received another bill stating that I owed $16.12. There is no explanation for this balance, and no interim bills were received in the past year. This company is very poorly managed and this is not the first time that there has been a billing problem for this long term subscriber.

We paid for a year's subscription for the e-edition and Sunday delivery of the printed paper. The paper has changed so much along with giving us news that happened ***** hours ago but not including puzzles that we always looked forward to playing. I have called them to cancel our subscription and ask for over $200 refund to account for what we have yet to use. They advised me that they DON'T issue refunds and that our cancelation will take place in September of 2023. We had no written contract with The Star and find this policy unacceptable.

It's sad to say but after several years of being a subscriber to our local paper the Kansas City Star, I have had to finally cancel. The Kansas City Star has a less than upstanding business protocol. After trying several different property addresses in attempt to receive consistent paper deliveries, different day schedules and several phone calls to customer service they are incapable of delivering your paper consistently as contracted in the subscription. Whoever is running the company should be ashamed of themselves, when you call to cancel your subscription the customer service representatives are trained to talk you into keeping your subscription even if lowering your rate will keep you as if the pay is being deducted from the representatives personal paycheck. In several attempts to cancel my subscription every time the representative offers lower rates, different scheduling delivery plans in order to keep you as a subscriber. Even if you express how frustrated you are with not receiving the paper as the subscription is contracted for.We as a the subscriber are signing up for a specific delivery system, the Kansas City Star is inept and unable to provide the service they advertise for their local supporters. It is exhausting, disgusting and extremely frustrating when all you want is to support a local business, read a good old fashion newspaper and stay up to date on the local and *****************. My uncle is also a subscriber to the Kansas City star, and he gets his paper every single day and it never misses a beat. I don't understand the difference between his account and mine. I don't understand how one company can deliver to one address without any hiccups and can fail so many times at delivering to a different address. Don't expect quality service when subscribing to this company. Thank you for your time.

I tried to unsubscribe from my digital subscription. I did the online chat with someone named ********. I told her I wanted to unsubscribe and after waiting several minutes she came back with a long dialog and offered my an opportunity to continue my subscription at a different rate. I repeated my request to cancel and she came back with another offer. I repeated my request in all caps, to cancel. She came back with another offer. Again, I requested to cancel and she texted that she has entered my request to cancel. This was on 12/11.On 12/12, I received 2 phone calls from them. I was again solicited to keep my subscription intact. He wouldn't take no for an answer. I had to get loud and rude with him and I finally hung up when he said my subscription was cancelled.Today, 12/13, I received ANOTHER call from them. I could not even understand the person I was speaking with and as clear and forceful as I could, I told him that I was told my subscription had supposedly been cancelled 2 days prior. I told him that if my credit card was charged without my permission, I would take them to small claims court. He told me he would cancel my subscription. After that call, I blocked them on my phone. Fair warning - DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THE KC STAR!! You will be tasseled and harassed when you try to cancel. I wouldn't give them 1 star.
