When Meridian assumed our local ****************************** service, they began assessing a $3.00 fee for processing invoices. Initially I questioned the fee and was informed the fee applied only to credit cards. It wasnt until December 2024 I was informed it applied now to all payments. They resolved the situation at that time. In March 2025 the fee issue again surfaced, I again questioned it. I then received an email from Meridian, a billing representative:Assistance Please - Your Meridian Waste Invoice for Account XXXXXXXI've managed to permanently remove the fee and waved the recent $3.00 fee. You should not be accessing the $3.00 fee going ********** June we received our new quarterly invoice, again, a processing fee of $3.00 is shown. However, rather than $78.00 including the fee, the invoice was only $75.00. Online their systems reflect a credit of $3.00 for last quarter, but online you had to pay $78.00. We sent a check for $75.00 as the invoice reflects. Recently, I have sent two emails, called yesterday and was transferred to their head of accounting, ******. I left a detailed voice message. Today, I left voice message we need to have this resolved, its Meridian that permanently waived the $3.00 fee. Having received no response (yet?) from ****** I decided its time have a third party involved BBB, perhaps communicating can be established and the fee permanently resolved. In essence they are feeing to use their sole service (which by the way they are the only waste service for our area). Their pickup teams are excellent, their call center support for a pickup related item (broken trash bin hinge after pick up) also excellent. Their customer service no assistance except to say the $3.00 fee cannot be waived and speak to ******. We would like this resolved and not have to continue this issue each quarter. Have Meridian permanently waive the fee as they said they would do, or credit our account $3.00 each quarter. Thank you.Business Response

Meridian Waste North Carolina, LLC is responding to complaint #********. Please be aware that the company publishes all fees assessed to customers, including residential subscription customers on its website here: ************************************************************************************************* fees are also disclosed on the quarterly invoices sent IN ADVANCE to all residential subscription customers. There is no current discount for paying with a credit card, band account debit, mail-in check or payment by phone. This is the poorly implemented across all residential subscription customers in *********************************************.
While it appears that this customer benefitted in the past from an uninformed ************* Representative, she was informed in December of 2024 that the fee would be applied, and no further discounts would be honored.
Although we appreciate our customers business, this customer is under no contract to continue receiving services from Meridian Waste and may cancel at any time.
It is our opinion that this customer owes the $3.00 quarterly fee since December 2024 and was fully informed of this policy as noted belowThank you for your attention to this response.

I have have been trying to resolve this directly with Meridian Waste since November 2024, with the latest attempt February 2025, but have been unsuccessful. I contacted Meridian Waste in April 2023 and spoke with ***** ******** about renting a dumpster that I would need for an extended amount of time. He suggested a 20 yd container for a flat-rate of $375 each time the dumpster was serviced (emptied). I signed the contract and ***** emailed back that he left the pick up date blank so I would not accrue additional fees. The container was delivered April 12, 2023. Aug 2023, I had the full dumpster picked up and replaced with an empty one. I received and paid the invoice of $375. From Aug 2023 until Aug 2024, I put items in the dumpster weekly but never needed it to be emptied and replaced. I never received additional notices, invoices, correspondence, phone calls from Meridian Waste or ***** regarding contract changes, fees, service requirements, etc. From Aug 2024 until Nov 2024 I received 4 invoices totaling $638 for "daily container fees". I paid the $638 and asked the dumpster to be removed and was sent another invoice for $400, which I have not paid. I contacted Meridian and their position is the $638 are "inactivity fees" for not having the container serviced every 30 days, which during the course of performance, I had never done nor been charged for, and the additional $400 to pick up and empty the container.Meridian Waste is operating under unfair and deceptive business practices, by misrepresentation in adding additional "daily" fees, not disclosed or agreed upon in our contract, by masking them as "inactivity" fees, and legal intimidation by threatening to file a mechanic's lien for the $400 unpaid invoice. I would like $263 refunded for my overpayment above the contracted rate of $375 and the additional $400 invoice plus fees eliminated. I have attached numerous documents, emails, etc.Business Response

North Carolina BBB:
Meridian Waste North Carolina, LLC is attaching the executed agreement by **** ******** with the sections of the agreement clearly disclosing the inactivity fee in the agreement. The inactivity fee is identified three (3) times on page 1 of the agreement.
We have been in communication with ***** ******** since February 7, 2025, sharing the agreement and our position that the inactivity fees that the business has been charged are valid and must be paid. It is to the business benefit that an inactivity fee was charged for every single day that the container fell within the timeframe of inactivity, and the fact that Meridian Waste did not charge the fee for those days does not alleviate the business of its fiduciary and legal requirements to pay the fees for when they were charged.
The Customer Account and Payment Terms are clearly defined in the contract as is the notice of lien language next to **** ********** electronic initials.
The business has not provided notice of final pull and Meridian Waste has not terminated the contract. The roll off container remains at the service address and will continue to generate an Inactivity Fee if there is no haul activity within a 10-day period.
Meridian Waste will pursue all legal remedies for the enforcement of payment for this legally binding contract.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:The agreement you provided is for **** ******** and not for me, ***** ********. **** ********** contract is irrelevant and does not pertain to my complaint. I do NOT have a container at my residence and haven't since it was picked up in November 2024. My contract and all the relevant documents pertaining to my complaint were, and still are, attached to my original submission to the BBB.

I am rejecting this response because:
Again, I am not **** ******** and have nothing to do with his account, container or contract, but I do know him, and know the prior response regarding his container is incorrect as well as his was picked up and no longer at his residence. I would consider this incompetence on the part of whomever is answering my complaint.I have attached numerous documents, emails, etc to my original complaint, which based on the 2 prior replies I received, were most likely not read nor taken seriously. The "proof" of Meridian's position is a copy of a contract which has nothing to do with me.
I did not agree to "daily container fees". Nowhere in my contract are "daily container fees" mentioned. Contract law is clear and I didn't sign a contract with any mention of "daily container fees" but I did sign a contract for a flat rate $375 container. Meridian trying to change the name of the fee to suit their needs and defend their position is a deceptive business practice. I have no choice but to report their actions to the *** and DOJ.

Attached is the Temp Agreement under ***** ********** name and signature. The language clearly states the inactivity fee.
Meridian Waste will proceed as appropriate with legal enforcement of this contract and lien until the account is brought current in payments.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:I am unsure why Meridian keeps referring to this daily container fee as an inactivity fee. I have reattached my contract proving I am not paying a daily rental charge (highlighted) but only a flat rate $375 20 yd dumpster (also highlighted).
I am also reattaching my invoices from Meridian to show NO WHERE on these invoices is there any verbiage referencing an inactivity fee. Each invoice states in plain English a Daily Container Fee, which based on my attached contract I am not liable for.
No matter how many times Meridian refers to this fee as an inactivity fee, no where on the invoice is it referred to as such. Meridian cannot charge a daily container fee and say it's an inactivity fee to suit their position. If it was an inactivity fee, it should be labeled as such on their invoice. It's like having a dog but saying it's a cat. It doesn't make it so.
I have overpaid my contractual price of $375 and would like my overpayment of $263 returned and any additional invoices and fees not owed eliminated.
I have also provided **** ******** a copy of these correspondences as well as the copy of his contract you sent to me in your answer to my complaint. I'm certain he will be contacting Meridian about his breach of privacy by sharing his personal information without his consent.

Meridian Waste is currently our trash service the account is in my husbands name ***** ******, they pick up our trash one week and then the next week they do not. I have tried several times including today 12/4/2024 to schedule a pick up for them not picking it up. They say they have driver footage of it being picked up, my trash was on the road at 6:30am Monday 12/2/2024 to be picked up. When I went out that afternoon to get it from the road it wasn't picked up. Apparently they have the wrong address. We pay for this service that we have to have, but it is not what we are paying for. I have called several times and the manager was very rude to me and never gave me his name or where he was located. There are 5 cans on our road and they only pick up 1/2 of them. When I told him that he said it would be Monday before they could pick it up on my regularly scheduled day. But They never pick it up and when they do, they skip a week inbetween. I have tried several days to have this fixed, and when I did get to speak to a manager, like I said he was very rude and not understanding. Several others have also had trouble with this company. I'm hoping you all can help to resolve this issue.Initial Complaint
