MailSafe Express Inc. provides a valuable and sensible service. If you accidentally have a knife or other prohibited item in your carry on, as you pass through airport security, the *** official recommends MailSafe Express Inc. as an option to mail your item to yourself. The small MailSafe Express Inc. kiosk is located right there, just inside the *** security screening area. If the price of the item is more than the price of mailing it, or if it has sentimental value, then using the service makes sense. Unfortunately, MailSafe Express Inc. practices misleading advertising, turning a potentially good service into a disappointing and frustrating experience. The crux of the issue is where MailSafe Express Inc. indicates the price for your item, be it a knife or liquid or a lighter. In my case it was a knife, $15.95 + shipping and handling. In their defense, it does say +shipping and handling, but it is quite understandable, even expected, that a number of customers will not notice, or understand, that bit correctly. After all, one is stressed and in a hurry trying to get to a flight, and the service is nothing but shipping and handling, so why would it be some amount + shipping and handling? Also, in my case the *** official said it would be $16, as he escorted me to the MailSafe Express Inc. kiosk. It is clear to me that MailSafe Express Inc. intentionally misleads the customer. If the reality were that they cant say how much they will charge, then there is no point in saying it will be $15.95 plus an unknown amount, except to mislead the customer into thinking it will be $15.95. Of course shipping costs are well known, so they could include them. Imagine if they just said that they will bill you later without telling you, up front, how much it will be, how many would choose to do it? The correct interpretation of + shipping and handling is essentially the same as we will bill you later without telling you up front how much it will be.
