Student Loans are a scam! Borrowed when I was 18 in 2012. Paid religiously, until my husband lost his job and I couldn’t pay back. Then under the Trump admin, now student loans are on credit. I paid in full to bring my account up to date, but they WILL NOT grant a goodwill update to your credit, so **** YOU.

Nelnet provides false information to its borrowers to prolong the payments for years in order to increase their revenue. Nelnet associates also do not take initiative in helping those to reduce their loan payments for the individual's better interest by expressing that qualifications for loan forgiveness have specific contingencies that do not align with the Federal Student Aid department.

I had some loans forgiven. I received a check in February of 2025. I contacted them to figure out why. I was told it was for overpayment. I cashed the check on March 1, 2025. I receive an email April 18, 2025 saying that that check was made in error. By this point I've already cashed and used that money for bills. I never saw the email and had no idea that it was requested back. Then I receive an email today (May 21, 2025) saying that my payment is overdue. I didn't receive any other contact between April and today to let me know a payment plan would be set up. No phone call, no email, no letter. This seems like incredibly shady behavior. I also can't get a hold of anyone by their phone or live chat on their website. According to the live chat, "We are currently closed." Everything about this stinks.

If Satan outsourced loan servicing, he’d call Nelnet Services. These folks looked at my promissory note, said “cute,” and tossed it like it was a CVS receipt. I’ve contacted them more times than you can count. Email? Ignored. Phone? Ghosted. Carrier pigeon? Might try next. Borrowed 18k from Discover, ended up here. Paid back 12k, still owe....drumroll please... 16k.
Their “customer service” is like playing Uno with a toddler, chaotic, ruleless, and somehow you always end up owing more. I’m convinced the reps are just Sims characters stuck in a loop of “Please hold.” Meanwhile, they’re racking up interest like it’s Bitcoin in 2010.
I’ve already filed complaints with the CFPB and FTC, and if this keeps up, I’ll file one with Beyoncé. Don’t walk away from this company, moonwalk, sprint, teleport. Just GO. I got forced into business with them due to a Discover student loans transfer and I should have gotten out immediately.

My student loan company sold my loans during covid. During that process the data was not entered correctly in Nel Nets systems. I didnt receive any communication from NelNet. I received a letter from my original student loan company saying the loan was sold and to wait to hear form NelNet. Well that communication never came because they had the wrong information. Fast forward a couple months later and my credit score takes a nose dive for missed payments. I asked NelNet to adjust those missed payments and they told me to pound sand. Horrible company. If you can get a different company to own and support your loans I recommend it.

While waiting for my loan to transfer to CRI the new loan company. They reported my loan as late to the credit bureau when I have been paying ON TIME. I am now in the middle a dispute which dropped my credit from 800 to 500. I am so upset as I pay all my loans on time. This is unacceptable. If I could say 0 stars i would

Last year I tried some of my student loans (Parent Plus so they were in my Mom's name) and at several points in the process reps from Nelnet directly and demonstrably lied to us. We had a 180 day wait period to file another consolidation after my brother had his consolidated but someone told us we could so we submitted the paperwork. Come to find out it was a amend to the previous consolidation so we canceled that and asked to start a new one. No one ever reached out about it. Called in 6 weeks later to see if it was going through and the person said it was and was taking time due to tax season. 2 months after that we called in again and learned it was canceled and no new one was submitted despite it being in the email. But somehow we had one going through. The next 4 months were filled with more lies from Nelnet and the complete refusal to do 'more work' on their behalf. Nelnet is run entirely by incompetent liars who get away with everything.

I am writing to formally file a dispute against NelNet regarding the reporting of negative information to the credit bureaus, which has significantly impacted my credit score. I have been making consistent payments toward my student loans, and the current derogatory mark on my credit report is both inaccurate and unjustified.

The reason for the temporary payment issue stemmed from a malfunction with NelNet’s automatic payment system. I had autopay set up through my bank account, yet for reasons beyond my control, the scheduled payments were not processed as expected. I was unaware this had occurred until I noticed the negative report on my credit, and I took immediate action to bring the account current.

It is important to note that I have a history of being a responsible borrower and have made every effort to maintain timely payments. This incident was solely due to a technical error with NelNet’s system and not a reflection of my intent or financial responsibility. I believe this situation should not have resulted in a credit score reduction, especially considering I have continued to make payments since then.

Nelnet advisors provide incorrect information to borrowers. I spoke with 7 different advisors and they provided incorrect information about my loan status and interest which led to make large payments that were not necessary. They took no accountability in providing incorrect information and try to blame the borrower. Filing a compliant with Department of Education or Student Aid Gov does nothing. Nelnet is a private company providing horrible services for federal loans. No loan borrower should have to deal with their inept services. Nelnet needs to be shut down. All federal student loans need to be moved to a different servicer.

I have the unfortunate disservice of having my loans through Nelnet after they bought them from GreatLakes loans. If I could give 0 stars, I would. This is hands down, the worst company I’ve ever dealt with for loans..or anything for that matter.
I have had DOZENS of payments that I paid, then got refunded for absolutely no reason except that their website is horrific, (resulting in many “late payments”) so I ended up just using a completely different bank account and put it on autopay, only for autopay to not work at all..also resulting in “a late payment”. When I called they said, well it could be your bank. Yet, for all of the loans I have, my bank works fine everywhere else.
I went from a nearly perfect credit score to it being very affected by Nelnet specifically, as it is the only company I’ve ever had an issue with payments for. The more frustrating part is that I always make my full payment on time every month..but I have tons of messages of “payment refunded” then I pay it again and it goes through.
If I was in the position to fully pay off my loans, I’d do it just for the sole purpose of never having to deal with this awful company again. I truly have no idea how they’re even still in business. On top of all of that, they actually got rid of their customer service email. I’m assuming because it was overflowed with constant complaints. I’m beyond fed up and unfortunately have no option but to deal with them. Fingers crossed they just go under and my loans get bought out by another company again.
My sincere condolences to whoever else has loans through Nelnet.
