    Proposed price for an asphalt job by Affordable Asphalt was $3,800. Not the lowest competitive bid I received, but the owner assured me he'd do a terrific job. His proposal/contract was signed, expecting my signature.
    I checked Affordable Asphalt's BBB rating and determined it very low, 1 out of 5 stars. I asked Robert how much asphalt he planned to use for the job and he said he estimated 5 to 6 tons.
    I calculated the precise amount to be 8 tons. I amended Affordable Asphalt's contract stating he'd need 8 tons for the job, included my calculations, and that he'd show the receipt that the asphalt was freshly obtained from the asphalt plant (asphalt must be emplaced while hot, within 2 hours of purchase at the asphalt plant, to maintain full strength...same as the concrete mixture purchased from a concrete plant). At this point Robert said he would not do business with me.
    Affordable Asphalt may be an honest and reputable outfit, but if it will not commit to basic parameters such as amount and age of its asphalt product used on the job, better forget about doing business with this company.
