Online, I ordered a subscription to "Ohio Magazine." After, I went to my newly-created customer portal/account on the "Ohio Magazine"/Great Lakes Publishing (GLP) website. There, I discovered GLP had, without telling me, automatically enrolled me in auto-renewals for my subscription. I requested a cancellation and refund, and they complied. Okay, but there's a deeper issue here: They are literally stealing money from people -- or, at best, giving themselves the potential to steal money. I'm anal, so I look at things like my newly-created accounts once they're set up. Most people don't. Yes, people should, but that's not the point. The point is that GLP is setting themselves up to have automatic access to people's money WITHOUT THOSE PEOPLE'S KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT. Since this is the United States, I'm sure GLP is violating no law. I'm sure they can't be prosecuted for anything, and no one at any level of government in the U.S. in 2025 would do anything about it even if they could. But GLP's behavior, even if not illegal, is highly unethical and deeply immoral. They should be ashamed of themselves, even though we all know they're not and won't be. For every person like me who catches it and cancels, there are a hundred who won't see what GLP has done, and those people will subsequently become unwitting cash cows for GLP -- more than making up for GLP's loss of my insignificant amount of money. If you happen to read this, please please PLEASE beware of GLP. You should absolutely under NO circumstances give them access to ANY of your financial data. They are, to put it bluntly, scumbags of the highest order -- even though, yes, if I'm being honest, "Ohio Magazine" is actually a very good magazine.
