in 2008 an Owens Corning Berkshire roof was installed on my home. recently it was inspected by 3 experienced roofing companies, all determined the roof is deteriorating faster than it should and it requires replacement. The resolution specialist suggests the roof is weathering normally. As evidenced by the other BBB complaints Owens Corning does not honor their warranty. I have asked for a second review which has been denied. Many of my neighbors have the same roof, some of the houses were built couple of years before mine and no one has similar issues suggesting my roof batch is defective. The resolution specialist seems to have initial and final say with no process for reviewing the determination.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:Why would the shingles deteriorate faster in the future. This appears to be just a way for Owens Corning to push the issue down the road. They never requested a couple of the shingles to be sent to them after having them removed. They also never provided a copy of the so called lab evaluation. There area rep has not even been on site to evaluate. I have not had a discussion with the company other than the party line " the shingles are showing normal wear". The fact that these shingles were discontinued suggests a problem with them, otherwise why discontinue?

5/20/25 ****** corning roof warranty/special warranty ***** and m&m roofing **** ***** came by my property today 5/14/25, to look at my home and garage roof and took at least eight pictures of my home roof that was installed June 2024 and my garage roof that was installed October 2024 both by m&m roofing ***********************************. Please mail to my address on file and email to me the 5/14/25 9:45am eight pictures that ****** ******* ***** took of my home roof and garage roof. If any type of the original ****** corning warranty/special warranty/m&m warranty is altered/breached per original contract. Im advised by the ****** of **********, my VA representatives and Habitat For Humanity. That they, will take the necessary steps and legal filings making sure all above-mentioned warranties are honored I would like to receive the 5/14/25 9:45am eight pictures mailed to me and emailed to me just in case I cant open and print them. Unfortunately, Im advised if I do not receive the 5/14/25 pictures-to refile with the BBB and also with Attorney General to get things restarted per recent treatment by M&M contractors ****/warranty companies. And like I mentioned before-m&m **** ***** mail to my address a $25 **** gift card because u were just very rude and discount me over the phone and my daughter even heard you ****. **** **** replaced my roof. I told them when it was finished that it was two different shades. The area in the right corner about 20 by foot by 7 foot is a different shade of black than the rest of the roof. They said it would fade with time and blend better. In 2006, I constructed a new home using Owens Corning architectural shingles, which were marketed and sold as 35-year shingles. Unfortunately, the product has not come close to meeting that standard. Within approximately 10 years, visible signs of degradation began to appear. By year 17, I estimate that at least 45% of the shingles were significantly deteriorated. The granules ("rocks") have loosened and are now clogging my gutters, a clear sign of product failure.
I submitted a warranty claim to Owens Corning, only to have it denied on the grounds that I did not provide a three-digit code printed on a small plastic strip found on the back of the shingles. This requirement is unreasonable and appears intentionally designed to frustrate valid warranty claims. Nearly all of the plastic strips have degraded or disintegrated along with the shingles, rendering the codes unreadable or nonexistent.
After removing the damaged shingles from my roof, I examined multiple samples that had not been exposed long enough for the plastic to completely deteriorate. I discovered that several of these strips contained no printed numbers at all. It is deeply concerning that Owens Corning would rely on a thin, degradable plastic strip to carry essential warranty information, rather than embossing or printing it directly onto the shingle itself. This suggests a failure in both design and accountability.
In my view, this practice is misleading, if not outright deceptive. Owens Corning’s refusal to honor the warranty based on a technicality tied to a flimsy and impermanent label undermines consumer trust and raises serious questions about their commitment to product quality and customer service.
I am requesting that Owens Corning reconsider its denial of my warranty claim and offer a fair resolution based on the documented failure of their product—well before the end of its advertised lifespan.Business Response

All claims require the same documentation to move forward, which will be two full size samples removed from the roof photographing both the front and back side. I am rejecting this response because:The shingles I purchased do not contain any code printed on the back. I have attached a photo clearly showing the plastic strip—there is no code present, hidden or otherwise. I believe this so-called “code” system was implemented by Owens Corning after my purchase and therefore has no bearing on my product or claim.
Furthermore, when I requested information from Owens Corning regarding the date this coding system was introduced, I received no response. This failure to answer only reinforces my position that the code requirement is a post hoc creation with no relevance to my warranty claim.

2012 6200 sq ft of Owens Corning Duration Harbor Blue Fiberglass shingles installed by a contractor approved by the insurance provider. 2025 shingles are dry, crumbling and blowing off the roof in 35-50mph winds. Both the contractor and insurance provider are deceased and the paperwork that Owens Corning is requesting is not available. I believe I still have the insurance claim paperwork, but not the receipts that Ownes Corning is requesting. I want to send them a shingle from the roof so they can see how poor these shingles have performed. The "reinforced" nail strip, the roofing nails pulled right thru it like it was not even there. The glue down strips are dried and never glued to the shingle below it. These shingles are DEFECTIVE and are NOT performing up to the advertised expectancy which was the sole reason for the purchase of the product. Owens Corning must be held accountable for the quality they advertise or should at the very least replace at their expense the defective shingles on my roof based on a test of the shingles that are blowing off. NOT based on a receipt from the now deceased contractor. Owens Corning is developing a reputation for finding ways to NOT honor their warranty, or hold to their advertised standards and MUST be held accountable for both. I will ship the sample shingles blown off the roof at my expense to the lab requested by Owens Corning (withing the continental U.S. in a USPS flat rate box), on a condition that i receive a full report on the condition of the same and can compare it to an independent lab of my choosing. At the very least, I feel that a representative can appear at my location, and do an inspection and explain why these shingles are so dry, brittle, and blowing off.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: I do not have the paperwork requested by Owens Corning regarding the warranty procedure to follow. Both the insurance agent and the contractor approved by the insurance agent are deceased. I want Ownes Corning to provide me the address for the laboratory so that I can send them the shingles blown off the roof for their lab to see how poorly these shingles have performed. There are over 62 square or over 6200 square feet of these shingles on my property installed in 2012 that are dry, crumbly, and blowing off the roof. I paid a high premium for the "Duration" shingle based on the ADVERTISED wind resistance, and "50 year" warranty that was advertised in the store that these were picked from. I want a complete report from Owens Corning and from a lab of MY choosing to look at the quality and performance of these shingles. I have 2-3 bundles of these shingles in a building that have not been installed that has the package warranty and advertising and can be compared to the quality of the installed shingles vs what they were out of the package. It is my belief that that Owens Corning knows that these shingles do NOT perform up to their advertised standards and have no intention of honoring any form of "warranty" that they advertise both publicly and on their packaging. I am rejecting this response because: I contacted Owens Corning about filing a claim for the "lifetime" warranty and was told that without the original sales receipt or sales receipt from the installing contractor that they would not proceed with a claim. As I tried to explain to Owens Corning, both the insurance agent AND the contractor that installed the roof have both died since the installation in 2012. I have repeated over and over again, that I have 3 bundles of the shingles un-opened left over from the time of installation. I have provided the lot number from one of those bundles and have requested more than once for Owens Corning to provide me with the address for the lab so that I can send them a couple of the shingles that blew off the roof for them to evaluate. They can also evaluate shingles that were unused and out of the elements from the same time period to see how badly dried out, brittle, the adhesive strip that NEVER bonded to the shingle below it, and the failure of the nailing strip to help prevent tear outs at the nail line as advertised where these were purchased at the time. It's becoming very evident that Owens Corning has no intention of evaluating these shingles as they know they will fail and don't want to have to be responsible for their replacement. Further the anti-mold growth they advertise is FALSE as these were the ONLY shingles this house had on it that HAD MOLD GROWTH ON IT IN THE FIRST 2 YEARS. There needs to be accountability for manufactures that sell their products based of false claims of durability and "lifetime" warranties even if they do say "limited" on several occasions. You don't see or hear "limited" repeated or even spoken on their advertising or in written form on their store displays unless it is so tiny you cannot read it from where it is displayed. Prove me wrong Owens Corning, and let's get these shingles evaluated, and let's post the information publicly. Otherwise you fully admit you sell a product with NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED.

Date Roof installed 7/2015 Owens Corning Duration Installed and registered for warranty Under 10 years installation house is for sale and the roof has failed 3 different home inspections due to excessive granular loss and blisters throughout the roof. 3 different buyers have cancelled contract due to roof condition. Filed a home insurance claim and the home insurance denied roof replacement due to excessive granular loss and roof blistering, no hail damage noted at all on the roof. We then opened a claim with Owens Corning and uploaded pictures. However, they won't cover the cost unless we replace with same materials. In order to continue selling the property, we had to replace the roof paying out of pocket. We don't trust the same material. Owens Corning says the only way they will cover anything is a voucher for more of their material. Why would we as homeowners trust the same manufacture with defective shingles? We are currently trying to resolve a roofing problem due to defective Owens Corning Oakridge shingles used on our new home. Our home is less than 5 years old. To date, there have been approximately 12 homes affected and more to come. Owens Corning states they will cover the shingles and labor only and quotes must be sent in. I have done this. Some claims have been approved but it seems like depending on the “adjuster” the dollar amount allowed is different. I sent in two quotes , now they want three. This has been a major inconvenience as many roofers won’t provide labor only quotes. In addition, Owens Corning has been in several class action lawsuits for the same problem with defective shingles. The homeowners in my development have had to lay out several thousand dollars for the additional costs! My claim number is ******** and ******** has been our claim adjuster. There are several adjusters working on this and I suspect that is why the dollar amounts differ! For one homeowner the split the cost of putting back their solar panels and yet denied another homeowner!! We submitted two quotes, one for $11,700 and the other for $11,200 but now want a third one!! I just want this over with and for Owens Corning to take responsibility that they obviously did not pre test these shingles for durability and misled the builder and homeowner of the lifetime of these shingles. Hello, it appears at this time that Owens Corning has complied with the terms of the warranty at this time. Each house/size of roof/design of roof is different, so when it comes to payment no two claims are the same. Additionally, I can confirm that Owens Corning does not cover the cost of solar panel removal and replacement. The requests for labor at this time are well above the market average. I am rejecting this response because: until I have a firm answer I want this to remain open. I’m trying for a third quote but again many of these roofers do not want to waste their time for “labor only” quotes. RJ roofers has done the majority of the homes affected in my neighborhood. It’s bad enough that I have out of pocket expenses to pay for the Duration shingles ( they won’t use Oakridge since they have problems with them) from the local shingle provider plus all the sheathing, nails, drip edge etc. Tgus has been a major headache and hurricane season is approaching quickly! The roofers are booking up as more homes are affected and roofs need to be replaced. Currently they are about 8 plus weeks out!!! Once I get a committed $10,700 ($1000.00 less than submitted) I will agree to close this. Thank you for your consideration. ***** *****

Hello, based on the review of your roof it appears that the shingles were not fastened properly. Improper fastener placement is the result of a workmanship issue which is not covered under the terms of your warranty, which I have provided to you to read up on. Your warraty is a System Protection Warranty which offers 50 years of ****** Manufacturing defect coverage, since this is a workmanship issue we suggest you reach out to a contractor for further assistance. Purchased a roof on 05/26/14 . My insurance agent rated my roof as a 3 rating and stated there was premature failures in the roof.
Called Owens Corning after being told I had a defective roof by my Insurance Company.
Called ******** ******* that is a platinum installer for Owens Corning, they stated the roof was defective due to granule loss not normal with the age of ten years. The warranty is life time.
******** contacted the local Owens Corning representative that agreed that there was issues with the roof and requested a sample be sent in to the manufacturer, and we did. As well as several pictures, they refused a drone be sent to do a fly over of the roof which we allowed.
We contacted the store Where I purchased the Shingles. They agreed after seeing the pictures that there is a defect in the shingles.
I have forwarded all this information to Owens Corning, no person has came to look at the roof personally only pictures.
Owens Corning refused to replace the damaged shingles even though it has been documented defective by:

The Owens Corning Representative
The store that sold it to me
The drone operator that flew my roof

This claim has been evaluated by our laboratory technicians. We obtained images from the customer, as well as photographs from our third-party drone service, along with two full-size shingle samples. It is typical for shingles to undergo weathering and degradation throughout the lifespan of the roof, which may manifest as minor surface cracks and/or the loss of some granules, particularly in areas such as eaves and downspouts. I am rejecting this response because:
I have had my Insurance Company come out and rate the roof as 3 rating and it's only 10 years old. They stated it was a issue with the shingles. I then called ******** ******* * ******** ***** ******* installer for their products. The owner come to my house personally ( not pictures or only two shingles that were aent in) and looked at my roof. They stated that the roof was not wearing correctly and it was a defective shingle issue. He then contacted the local Owens Corning representative that agreed and stated the Roofing was defective. They then gave me the information to file a complaint with Owens Corning. We then had the company that sold us the Roofing look at my roof. ******* agreed that the Roofing was not wearing correctly and they agreed with the owens corning contractor,owens corning representative,and the insurance company.The drone operator stated that he observed the wearing issue on the roof. I have this recored on my home camera system. All four of the people listed above stated the roof is defective. No one from the company of owens corning has came to look at the roof, only picture. All the professionals that have laid eyes and hands on the roof have stated its a defective roof.

We have assisted with sending out a third party service to obtain photos, which we confirmed the issue to not be excessive. It is the natural for the shingle to lose granules throughout time due to being exposed to the elements. Based on the the installation date of 2014, what you are experiencing is not considered excessive and the claim will remain denied. I have had roofers come to my house on occasions to make repairs. On one occasion, a roofer stated there was excessive shingle degranulation and damage to my roof. The roofers said it was not due to hail. I provided pictures and shingle samples to Owens Corning. The roof is just now 10 years old. It was supposed to be a 30 year roof.The company provided a check for the shingles but refuses to provide for the labor. The resolution specialist said it was a month or so out of the 10 year window. I provided picture evidence from another roofer of defective shingles dating back to May 2023. This provides proof of shingle defect well within the 10 year window. My resolution specialist stated that the lab technicians were in agreement that there were shingle defects in the pictures from May 2023.I requested by phone and email to speak to the review board for my claim to be reviewed. I never received any info from them. I called my resolution specialist around a month later. He said that it was denied. I never received any email or call from the board, only by his word of mouth. I requested today to speak with the review board which was denied. I requested a formal letter from the review board today. He said one would be ******* resolution specialist said he is solely in charge and there is no one else to talk to. This date indicates that the claim is nearly two months beyond the 10-year Tru-Protection warranty period. While we have approved your claim, it is important to note that you are outside the coverage of the Tru-Protection warranty. Consequently, in accordance with the warranty terms, we have issued a prorated voucher applicable solely to shingles. Please be aware that once the Tru-Protection coverage has lapsed, all accessories and labor are no longer valid.

I am rejecting this response. I provided proof of shingle with pictures dating back to May 23. This was within the 10 year window. The lab technicians agreed that shingle defects were evident in the pictures. I received an estimate of over nine thousand dollars for the labor cost for repairs. I want an explanation in the form of a phone call from a review board representative as to why I should pay over nine thousand dollars in labor cost due to Owens Corning selling me defective shingles. I requested a formal phone call from them weeks ago which I have yet to receive. I was also told I would receive an email letter from a review board representative on more than one occasion and have yet to receive anything. Paying over nine thousand dollars for Owens Cornings mistake of making defective shingles is completely wrong. As a customer, I am totally dissatisfied with their lack of ability to stand by their product. It shows a great deal about this companys standing with their complete avoidance of contact by the review board and not providing customers any way to speak with representatives other than the resolution specialist when disputing results.
