Sun East Federal Credit Union has put my debit card on hold for no apparent reason. This is the 5th time this has happened. This is the 5th time I have been inconvenienced due to the bank. I made a purchase on Friday that is pending on my account. On Saturday and Sunday I was unable to use my card due to the bank putting a hold on my debit card and I could not contact anyone to remove the hold because the bank was closed over the weekend. The bank is supposed to sent me text messages to confirm fraudulent charges which I never received. The autopay from my cell phone provider keeps getting removed due to the banks error which causes added charges on my account. I could not use my debit card on Saturday or Sunday. I had to use my bank credit card where the bank is charging me an interest rate over 17% on transactions. It is very embarrassing to be in a store and use my debit card to have it declined when there are funds in my account. The bank continues to do this over and over again with my debit card and no one at the bank seems to be able to fix this issue or cares. The customer service at ******** is terrible. This just happened to me in December and now its happening again in February. The bank continues to inconvenience me by declining transactions on my debit card. The bank needs to refund me any transactions I made on my credit card because they put a hold on my debit card for no reason and they never contacted me to confirm if the charge on Friday was fraudulent. I want the bank to pay me for the embarrassment they caused me when my card was declined on Saturday 2/8/25 and Sunday 2/9/25. I want charges made on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday removed from my credit card account because I should not have had to use my credit card in the first place.Business Response

Sun East Federal Credit Union is in the business of stealing huge, punitive fees from customers who make honest mistakes and try to correct those mistakes immediately. They have different operating principles for themselves as opposed to their customers. And their Supervisor, *******, is completely incompetent, unprofessional, and repeatedly refused to refund the $72 in punitive fees they stole from my account without my authorization on 12/13/24 and 12/16/24. I accidentally used my SunEast debit card, instead of my intended PNC debit card, to pay for groceries at $95.14 on 12/13/24. As soon as I got home, I realized the mistake and immediately transferred $100 from my *** account to my ******* account to cover the $95.14 Giant charge. But because ******* allows themselves the option of taking days to process transactions initiated by customers, while at the same time allowing themselves to initiate transactions immediately, they hold the customer at a distinct disadvantage and cause them to incur billions of dollars in hefty fees that the bank nefariously collects, instead of acting in good faith with their long term customers to allow them to mitigate and/or correct the problem. And in this case, acting AGAINST SENIOR CITIZENS! They did the very same thing to me in May 2024 with my Social Security check which was pending. It was an honest, and easily correctable mistake, and they wanted to steal my money anyway.SunEast simply does not care what happened or how a customer tried to resolve a problem. They are h*** bent on collecting punitive fees against their customers to increase their profits. This is NOT ACTING IN GOOD FAITH TOWARD CUSTOMERS; IT'S THEFT -- CLEAR AND SIMPLE. I don't care what they claim they do or don't do. On it's face, it is theft.Customer Answer

This Credit Union unfairly and unjustly charged me courtesy fees amounting to $180 which I want refunded immediately. An explanation of what happened is below. Their representative, ******, refused to resolve the five "courtesy fee" charges of $36 each on May 6 and 7, 2024, even though I told her this was an honest, first-time mistake with the deposit of my Social Security check. My letter to this Sun East Federal Credit Union:I am very, very angry that your credit union charged me seven different courtesy fees, which I can ill afford as an elderly retired person. I called your staff (******) and explained that this was an honest mistake that I had never made before. She would only refund 2 of the 7 accidental payments I made. She simply did not care about my situation. My Social Security check was listed as pending in my account this past weekend, and I assumed it would be deposited on Monday morning (May 6, 2024). On that basis, I made payments over the weekend, not realizing that the social security check was not going to be deposited the next day, which it always is. That has never happened before. The check is usually deposited the day after I see the pending notification. That is a totally honest mistake on my part, and I have dealt with enough banks in my lifetime to know that you can refund these fees. Banks do it all the time as a courtesy. To take this amount of money from an honest, law- abiding customer is nothing short of legalized theft.I could see it if I was continually paying vendors without money in the account. But that is not the case. I am an honest person, and I made an honest mistake. And your credit union needs to refund those fees in good faith. Its unconscionable that you are stealing this money (especially from elderly people who live on a budget) in instances where it is totally unjustified."Customer Answer

This Sun East Federal Credit Union did call me and reluctantly refunded the exorbitant fees they charged. I am saddened that they did not respond to the complaint, as I am finding serious and continuing questionable practices by these credit unions.Initial Complaint

I have had a car loan with Sun East Federal Credit Union for about 2 years now and I have never missed a payment. I set up autopay for the monthly payment through their online banking after speaking to someone on the phone when I made my first payment. At that time it was the 14th of the month because I had been unable to get ahold of anyone prior to that. This person said that it would be fine to have the autopay set up for the 14th of the month and there would be no penalty. I then received a late fee on my next payment that was taken out. Went I went back into the online banking app to move the payment to the 1st of every month so this would no longer happen, It said that my total monthly payment would be $444.97. I was aware that this was less than my original agreed upon payment amount, but I was told by the first person I spoke, and the dealership, said that If I set up autopay there would be a discount. So I figured that was what that discrepancy was since it was their website saying that was my payment amount. I have faithfully paid that amount every month now for almost 2 years without anyone contacting me, not even once, to say that the amount was incorrect so I was still under the impression that I was paying the correct amount. Out of the blue, this week, I have received calls from an unknown number with very vague voicemails to call them back. When I called back they stated that I have been paying the incorrect amount for 2 years and they want me to pay $1500 now to make up for it. This was a problem on their end, with their system. I am at fault now 2 years later when no one ever informed me that their system messed up the numbers. Additionally, *****, a senior collector I spoke with, was telling me that it would be on my statements. I have paperless billing. He then told me I can see it on my online statement but locked me out of my account and would not allow access until I paid the full amount. Im also not the first person who has had this problem.
