I had a terrible experience at Maria's Alterations in Charleston. Over the phone, Maria told me that the turnaround time for my alterations would be 1-2 weeks, which was quicker than other places, so I decided to go with them. However, after trying on my clothes at the shop, Maria informed me that it would actually take a month to complete the work. She also mentioned that they only accept cash, which was suspicious, and they won’t start on any items until payment is made upfront—something I’ve never encountered before.

I went back inside to let Maria know I couldn’t wait that long for my clothes. To my shock, both Maria and her husband started yelling at me, refusing to give my clothes back unless I paid them $10. I explained I had no cash, which is why I hadn’t been able to pay earlier. In response, they suggested I go across the street to a grocery store and buy them water and bananas instead of the $10—an absurd request. I insisted that I wouldn’t leave without my clothes, and then the husband physically shoved me out of the store, laughing as he locked me out.

I called the police, unsure of how to proceed. I eventually got $10 from a nearby ATM and was able to retrieve my clothes. I will never go back to this place and strongly advise others to avoid it. The entire situation was unprofessional, and I felt unsafe.

This business fraudulently charged me twice for my alteration. They charged me $25 to hem my pants when I dropped my pants off (you HAVE to pay when you drop off— they don’t let you leave without paying), and then said I had not paid when I picked my pants up. I showed them the cleared check dated THE DAY I DROPPED MY PANTS OFF, and they insisted that it was wrong, and that I had to pay another $25. Their record keeping consists of poor records written on a spiral-bound notebook, and they get themselves so busy by talking to multiple customers at once, so a customer doesn’t stand a chance at getting fairly checked out. They barely speak English, so they just act like they don’t understand. They ripped me off— don’t let them rip you off, too. Use another alterations business.
