I was told if I signed with the pier for early move in I would receive a $3500 upload to my community rewards account. I was told this would be uploaded by the beginning of July. That did not happen so I was then told end of July latest. Finally when that did not happen I was told August 9th. I still have seen 0 dollars in my account. I call daily and no one picks up the phone. I have left multiple voicemails with only 1 return call giving me more false information about when I can expect the money. They have stopped picking up the phone, stopped returning my calls and still have not given me a dime.Initial Complaint

I was promised in writing- in my contract- a $2000 incentive card for early move in June 1, 2024. I was supposed to receive after the first month’s rent was paid. An email later cane out stating there was an unexpected delay, but the cards would be distributed before July 26. After calling the office, I was told there is no card coming and no expected date.
I pay rent on time and keep the apartment tidy and clean. Why am I getting the run around on a promise when my end of the bargain has been upheld?
We have outlets in the bathrooms not working, a back door that sticks and an ant infestation we cannot get rid of.
Not happy at all with the quality of the building, the lack of service from the front office, and the one redeeming factor for moving in early is now a broken contract.Initial Complaint

I lived at the pier houses my sophomore year at Clemson University. During my time their I took great care of the apartment and left it in great shape. Originally I was under the impression that I had paid a security deposit and was never notified otherwise. After I moved out of the apartments I was sent a bill for carpet cleaning for $45 and paint for $200. The carpet cleaning fee seems reasonable but $200 to paint one room is absurd due to the fact that I just painted an entire house for under $200. When I received this bill I tried to get in touch with the pier to notify them to use my security deposit. My calls were ignored and I left them messages that were never returned. After a while of my calls not getting returned, I gave up on the process and figured they were just going to use my security deposit. About two months late I get a call from a collection agency that i've been turned in for an outstanding debt. I had no idea what was going on, and then tried to call the pier again to ask what was happening and again, my call was ignored. I finally got in touch with them after calling them twice back to back and was told I never paid a security deposit. This was major news to me and I immediately paid off the debt, although the first time they called I refused to pay because I thought it was a scam. That goes to show the lack of communication that I received from this business. My frustration is that I now have an outstanding collection on my credit report for something that I had no Idea about. This is going to effect the success I am trying to strive for in my life based off of negligence and incompetence of a company that doesn't have the decency to even answer their phone. I would like this debt to be expunged from my credit report and to make sure this never happens to another college student.Business Response

Hello!
I am so sorry to hear that you experience with us was lack luster. However, I feel that some of this frustration is unwarranted. There were several attempts to communicate your balance to you, please see the screenshot attached. Additionally, on the final statement you received, there was an itemized review of your pending charges AND an email for disputing those charges, should you have wanted to do so. Lastly, your lease agreement would have reflected whether or not you paid a security deposit....I'm not sure why it would be our responsibility to inform you that you did NOT pay a security deposit as that would be your responsibility to keep up with.
It seems like there was a lack of attention here on your part. We did all what we needed to in order to inform you of your charges and even offered you a way to dispute those charges if you didn't agree with them. Again, I'm sorry you feel like we dropped the ball, but I would have to disagree. If you need anything else, please reach out to us at ************************* for additional support.

False advertisement and hope when gathering information in regards to availability and housing options. Was given a verbal guarantee in reference to open availability and was told a manager would contact me, which never happened. After submitting the application and a $210.00 fee, there was no availability and company stated they could not refund my money.Business Response

Although the application and admin fee are non-refundable, and also stated before all payments are made, our Regional Manager was able to approve the reversal.Initial Complaint

I moved out of The Pier at Clemson on 6-2-22. My lease end date was 7-25-22. I was always current with my rent and had no outstanding balances. Not only was I not refunded my $200.00 security deposit, they said I owed $48.34 more. They charged me for full painting, full cleaning and full carpet cleaning of the room. Although I left the room cleaner and in better shape than when I moved in, besides the fact that all of these things are considered “normal wear and tear” and should be covered under South Carolina Code Ann. 27-40-410. There were no holes in the walls, any damage what so ever, and nothing needed repaired either. Also of note is that this is the 3rd Management Company that I have had at The Pier since I moved in, Aug. 16, 2019. At that time the carpet was down to threads in multiple areas and all of the carpet in the entire apartment had to be replaced. There was also black mold in the downstairs coat closet. I left my room in better shape than when I originally moved in. The current management company is stating that in 2019, residents were to complete a “move-in inspection form”. I can not be held responsible for what the previous management company did or did not do. Me nor the other roommates that moved in at that time received any such forms.
I have provided description and definitions of "normal wear and tear vs. damage" according to SC laws and still have not been able to get resolution of this issue. We have disputed these extra charges and have requested the full security deposit returned to no avail. I think it is also important to mention that there is a complaint to the BBB that is very similar to this against The Pier due to overcharging and not returning security deposits. It appears that The Pier responded to the complaint by stating that “there was a glitch in the system”. I wouldn’t think it could be another “glitch”, but but more of a pattern of mishandling of security deposits and over charging of tenants.Initial Complaint

I have not lived in this residential area for three years. I was not made aware of any outstanding balances or payments in arrears. I did not receive any notification regarding an outstanding balance, including checking at my parents address. Roughly two months ago, I was contacted by a collections agency regarding an $85 outstanding debt to the Pier at Clemson. I went ahead and paid it, but after further review, I was never notified I owed anything and still am not sure what the charge was in relation to. My credit score has dropped by 50+ points due to this egregious error, and I am aware of at least two other individuals this has happened to.
