We bought a hot water heater from AO Smith in July 2024 & it’s already leaking on our brand new floors. When I reached out to them to request a refund & return the hot water heater, as we have no interest in purchasing another one from this company nor did we want a replacement, they advised to send pics of where it’s leaking. Once I responded to their email request of the pictures I waited a week & never heard back so i called them back & they said they usually send an automated email once they receive the pics advising the customer to call them back. I was then advised they won’t refund me, that they will only send me a replacement release valve & that in the owners manual it’s a recommendation for customers to also buy a pressure reducing valve, not a requirement, but recommendation. So if this new, not even 1 year old release valve doesn’t fix it & my plumber replaces that, then I need to then go purchase a pressure release valve & again have my plumber come out, pay him, to add that, too. I escalated to a manager, *****, who was condescending & advised the same, also that i should’ve put a pan underneath of the water heater, to which there wasn’t room to anyway where it sits, which wasn’t even helpful to advise after its already ruined my new floors. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY, we are over $600 out from the purchase & not having to pay our plumber to come back out again, maybe twice if this part doesn’t work. Why would it, if the brand new one doesn’t now!?!

I purchased a State hybrid heat pump water heater because of the technology in the unit. The heat pump works well with my solar panels, and the ability to adjust temp and functionality remotely made the unit perfect for my needs.
In the first month I noticed a Sulphur smell in the water, and after researching realized my well water was reacting with the supplied anode rod. I swapped that rod out for a plug-in anode rod which seems to be working fine, but the system generated an 044 error (anode depleted). Unfortunately that error code disables all of the remote access capability as well as ability to manually change the heating temperature so I can no longer remotely switch modes or change temperatures at all.
I called the tech support lines multiple times requesting access to someone who could evaluate why the 044 code disables all of the remote functionality and locks the temperature. I keep getting unhelpful canned responses, which frankly are frustrating. This seems like an easy fix to your system functionality; making the error simply a warning instead of disabling critical functionality. I couldn’t be more disappointed, and believe I have to write a series of appropriately negative product reviews where I can so no one else who has well water makes the mistake I have apparently made.
      Very disappointed.

This company is a scam and is committing fraud. Legal action needs to be sought against them. The business we bought the hot water heater from will not take the item back. The business states they are unable to without a item return number from AO Smith. Keep in mind the business also stated that they CONSTANTLY have people trying to return these heaters because they are defective. AO Smith will not provide a return number. They want you to funnel more money into their company by stating that you need to buy parts from them. You will be out $700+ by the time this is all said and done with this company. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM AO SMITH!!!! Everyone of us that has an issue with them needs to start contacting our states consumer protection agencies. AO Smith should NOT be allowed to stay in business with these shady practices.

They have done nothing but give us the runaround with brand new heater purchased while we had to gonwitout hot water for over 2 weeks with my 83 year old mother. They should be ashamed of themselves for taking people's money and selling them back units and then not want to take responsibility to fix it without charging more money that they should be covering
A new heater does not just shut down and stop producing hot water within a week of living there.
I feel they seel defective ubits and then want you to pay to fix the broken product they sent you in the first place. All 3 calls have given me different excuses which means they are lying.
This was a newly renovated house with a brand new water heater that does not work. That they refuse to send someone out to fix. Waht is the point of the warranty?
Someone should put the out of business.

I bought a ******** electric water heater when mine died after 22 years. Within 5 months, the new one died. ********/AO Smith, told me to exchange where I bought it. The second died in 7 months. ******** sent me elements. It died again 5 months later. They would not reply to me. Since, in 3 years, I have replaced the elements 8 times. I just bought a *****, but my ******** is still under warranty. They will not reply to my emails. They will not talk to me. The store I bought it from has a 6 month return policy. Don't buy this garbage.

We have had our home less than a year and started having issues with our A O Smith electric tankless water heater. The hot water went out in Jan 2024 and would not get hot no matter what. We had three different plumbers come look at it. Each plumber tells us that no one has experience with the electric tankless ones. Two of the plumbers called customer service. They had issues getting in contact with them or getting a call back. The plumbers did not get a lot of answers through customer service. They said it could be this or this and no definite resolution. It continued to send codes no matter what they would suggest we do. We replaced the elements in it and still had issues. The unit is supposed to be under a 5 year warranty yet nothing was. Once elements were replaced it began to still not heat up and stay hot. The customer service told us it was the mother board and it was not under warranty and was going to cost over $400 to replace that part. A new tank cost $500 and the part they said needed changing cost almost at much. The customer service rep didn’t know for sure whether this was the actual problem and would fix it. We purchased a brand new electric tankless unit same model and brand. This costing over $500 for a new unit as well as having to pay someone to install it as well. It was put in and it started throwing another code once again. There is no reason a brand new unit should be throwing a code. We have a plumber coming out for now the 5th time trying to resolve this. We have not had hot water since Jan. 2024. We have not been able to stay in our home due to this issue. We have had to pay over $1000 in trying to have someone help us with this unit through a plumber as well as an electrician.

My new water heater has been leaking since day one. AOSmith has come up with thing after thing why this is not their fault. My plumber has been here eight times doing their recommended repairs to no avail. I am buying another water heater and throwing this one out. I’ll pay to install one that works

Do NOT buy AO Smith water heaters. I replaced an older water heater in 2014 with AO Smith brand, less than 5 years later it was landfill material. It was replaced again, the only coverage from the warrant was replacement of the unit, I was on the hook for a grand in labor, less that 5 years later the new unit is once again headed to the landfill and now I am on the hook for everything.

The issue of having a failure every 5 years indicates the anode rod in the water heater is depleted.

Once the anode rod is depleted, the tank will corrode.

We recommend reviewing the manual provided with your next water heater, and ensuring the maintenance in that manual is performed. This includes periodically inspecting and replacing the anode rod.

If the maintenance is not performed on your next water heater, regardless of brand, you will experience similar results.

I purchased a hybrid water heat from A.O. Smith. The hybrid unit dose not heat the water to an appropriate temperature. They kept saying the room was too small but it exceeds what was recommended by the manufacturer. I opened the door and put a fan blowing extra air in and it still did not work. It is not set up to have the backup eclectic elements help if it cant keep up so you need to switch it to a standard electric water heater. I paid extra expecting energy savings. Total scam.

I purchased an A/O Smith tankless water heater February 2022 and began experiencing failures in November 2023. Contacted the 1-877 number on the side as directed and for the past 2 months have not came to a resolution with A/O Smith. I cannot get my calls escalated after spending $1,324.46 on the first service call and $1,060.13 on the second service call. All the while A/O Smith keeps telling me to check something else, repeating the same steps over and over and at the end of each call recommending a different part for replacement. After the last call I asked for a full replacement unit since I have now spent over $2500 for a $1200 unit. According to them A/O Smith does not offer replacement units and wants now to send me a new computer board. This is $1600 to replace. Not to mention I have to pay shipping on all parts. Terrible customer service and warranty coverage. Do not buy anything A/O Smith as per the recommendation of our plumber and gas company.
