I signed up for a free subscription that was to end on November 18th. When I went to cancel I had already been charged. I sent an email stating that I thought I had time to cancel still and wanted to cancel moving forward so I would not be charged an additional $74.20 in December. They emailed back saying that I would be charged $74.20/month for a year since I did not cancel my subscription yet they charged me on the last day I had to cancel. Their customer service email only gave a first name ****** and the customer service agent on the phone would only give me her first name *********. The agent said there was nothing they could do and that I would continue to be charged. She hung up on me when she said she was transferring me to her supervisor. I then went online to see reviews and saw hundreds of complaints of people being scammed in the same manner. Some had canceled but didn't uncheck the renew subscription so it charged them for a year anyway. I noticed that the amounts they charged people were different as well. Their terms were not very transparent and they are very unwilling to work with people. I cannot afford the service moving forward and it would cause me hardship to pay this subscription.Business Response

Our offer is transparent and straightforward; there's nothing hidden or misleading about it. At iStock, we clearly outline that new customers can enjoy 10 free downloadable images as part of a trial connected to an annual subscription. These 10 free trial images can be selected during the first month (the trial month) exclusively. Our terms explicitly state that it is the customer's responsibility to cancel the paid subscription before the free trial period ends. During the trial period, customers can request to cancel by reaching out to **************** or by utilizing the self-service option. Please note that the self-service option is no longer available once the free trial ends.

I am rejecting this response because there are over a hundred of the same complaints online that the policy and/or wording is misleading. They also did not state that they refunded my money, which I do appreciate and want on the record. But it alone does not solve the issue moving forward for other people. It should be made clearer that the last day of the window is not free but will be the day that the charge incurs. There should also be a reminder sent to people days before so they remember to cancel. Their response did not address the poor customer service of being hung up on by the representative. The stone cold way they conduct business is appalling.
Sincerely,

I signed up for a free month long trial with iStockPhoto, and forgot to cancel. I was charged on 11/17/23 for the first of 11 installments. I emailed them the same day asking if they could cancel, since I haven't used any download credits outside of my free trial. They refused, stating there will be no exceptions made.I cannot afford these monthly charges, especially for a service I do not intend to use. I am not asking to be refunded for month I paid, I am asking to cancel future charges since I have not used any credits.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because:I would like to correct some information provided. I received the invoice for the $70 charge on November 17th at 9:23 AM. I submitted an inquiry on the iStock website on November 17th at 9:43 AM (Reference number ********). I still have not and do not plan to download any images since the free trial period ended.
Id also like to note that given the frequency of similar complaints, it appears there your offer is neither transparent nor straightforward. Ignoring the evident dissatisfaction of numerous customers and relying on such uncommon and rigid terms is not a sustainable business model.
As I have mentioned before, I am recently unemployed and cannot afford these charges. I have also read your other responses and seen instances of exceptions being made and future charges being cancelled as a courtesy. Considering how quickly I contacted you after the charge and the fact I havent downloaded any images since the trial ended, I urge you to reconsider cancelling my subscription.
I hope we can find a fair resolution to this matter promptly.Initial Complaint

I signed up for a free trial on the 18th of October and missed the cancelation day. They charged my account $70 on November 18th. They are now saying I am in a contract that I can't get out of and I'll be charged monthly $70 for an entire year! I DO NOT WANT THIS SERVICE. Had signed up for a free trial, near the end of the free trial period, business hadn't sent out any sort of email that the billing was going to occur soon, and when I tried to cancel the service, which I never had any use for and didn't use but once, there was no option anywhere to cancel. I contacted their customer service several days before and they didn't respond. I contacted them again after my account was charged and they refused to help. Basically saying oh well too bad. I want my money that was taken out of my account from them.Business Response

This company has a history of scamming people. They do not provide any option to cancel this ridiculous service at the end of the trial period and they will continue to bill you. The only option you have is to turn off auto renew which doesn't stop being billed. They wait to respond so they can take your money then say too bad on the refund. This company has numerous bad reviews due to this practice of scamming people. They make it impossible to cancel.Initial Complaint

I signed up for a one month trial through a website called Pixabay. It was misleading since it actually signed me up with iStock instead. It was extremely difficult to unsubscribe before the end of the trial period. Today marked the end of the trial period and they withdrew $70 from my bank account. I reached out to them with no success. They told me that this will be $70 per month since it was in terms of service. This is unacceptable and should be illegal.Business Response

I took a one-month trial subscription with iStock (subsidiary of Getty Images, I *****) on Oct. 13. I did not use the service beyond Oct. 26, and cancelled on Nov. 2 via the vendor's website, where it confirmed I was cancelled. However, today (Nov. 13) I was billed for the service for the next month ($70), and when I checked the vendor's website, I saw that my account had been uncancelled somehow. I alerted vendor to the issue, and though they cancelled my membership so I would not be billed subsequently, they refuse to issue a refund, even though today is the first day of this bogus subscription and I have not used their service for three weeks. I do not know whether the uncancellation stemmed from a technical issue on their end or something more nefarious, but this $70 is a fraudulent charge.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because: It is untrue that I did not cancel within the trial window. I cannot speak to what records iStock has or whether there was some sort of technical error on their end, but the immediateness of my response to being billed, along with the fact that I did not download any item from the site at any time approaching the Nov. 2 date on which I cancelled, ought to make clear enough that I believed I no longer had the service; and the fact that I did not use the service at any time anywhere near Nov. 13 (or even Nov. 2) ought to have been enough for iStock to resolve this issue amicably by refunding the $70, since they provided no service anywhere near going beyond the trial period. Also, it may be worth nothing that when I asked them to cancel my service and refund the $70, they cancelled the service immediately rather than providing me with the one month worth of service that the $70 covered. It's not a question of whether I WANTED the service, but rather that if iStock was completely above board with their billing policies &c., they would not cut off service that they'd already billed me for, but rather cancelled the service on Dec. 13.
Sincerely,

I signed up for a trial subscription and cancelled it via email the same day. These fraudsters have no automated means of cancelling a subscription. I am rejecting this response because:There is no self-serve option.
I did send an email.
Regardless of either of those things, iStock is based on *******. The Consumer Bill of Rights in ******* has several sections which apply to this transaction, even assuming I didn't cancel the service:
Section 3: "The right to: Cancel an internet purchase or contract over $50 within seven days if a business fails to properly disclose the total amount owed or if the goods are not delivered within 30 days of the delivery date." I asked for a refund the same day I was charged, and as iStock can confirm, did not take possession of any of their goods and services.
Section 4: "The right to: The full protections of the Consumer Protection Act. You cannot waive or release your rights, benefits, or protections under the Act." iStock's claim that their contract binds me is irrelevant to the consumer protection laws of *******.
I want my refund. My next step will be to initiate a consumer complaint with the province if my refund is not delivered immediately.

I am rejecting this response because:I am kindly asking to cancel the subscription from now, as it's a monthly payment and not a one-time payment. I am not willing to use the service for the below reason :
As mentioned to Istock in my conversations with them, I am currently diagnosed with Brain tumor and I am going through a lot and I did forget to cancel to subscription due to my situation.
I will not make a usage of Istock due to the upcoming treatments becauseI I use bank images for my clients as I am a graphic designer. I won't be able to work and earn any money.
Find attached the *** report dated in July 2023 when they discovered the low-grade glial lesion ("Lsion gliale de bas grade" in the document).
For your information : "Low grade glioma is a uniformly fatal disease of young adults (mean age 41 years) with survival averaging approximately 7 years."I am not asking for a reimbursement for the 2 months I already paid.
Note that I did not do any downloads in August, while I still paid for the subscription.
In september when I did the downloads, I thought was still on the free trial.I am asking for a gesture from their side due to my situation and cancel the coming payments as due to my cancer I am going to be in a financially difficult situation.

BBB Business Profiles are provided solely to assist you in exercising your own best judgment. BBB asks third parties who publish complaints, reviews and/or responses on this website to affirm that the information provided is accurate. However, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by third parties, and does not guarantee the accuracy of any information in Business Profiles.
When considering complaint information, please take into account the company's size and volume of transactions, and understand that the nature of complaints and a firm's responses to them are often more important than the number of complaints.
BBB Business Profiles generally cover a three-year reporting period, except for customer reviews. Customer reviews posted prior to July 5, 2024, will no longer be published when they reach three years from their submission date. Customer reviews posted on/after July 5, 2024, will be published indefinitely unless otherwise voluntarily retracted by the user who submitted the content, or BBB no longer believes the review is authentic. As a matter of policy, BBB does not endorse any product, service or business. Businesses are under no obligation to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation. BBB charges a fee for BBB Accreditation.
